Is freedom of speech an absolute that should be guarded at all costs? Or does there come a point when what someone is saying becomes so offensive that actually they should not be allowed to say it? This of course is not an arbitrary debate. Muslims around the world have been outraged at recent portrayals of the Prophet Mohamed and Wars are fought often partly to preserve free speech and freedom of expression. So is freedom of speech an absolute? I personally don't think it should be. I think there are people who at times deliberately exploit freedom of speech to insight hatred. Within our country, of course, we don't allow completely free speech because, quite rightly, enshrined in our law it is illegal to discriminate against people because of, for example, their race. So our laws correctly restrict freedom of speech. I think therefore we need to be careful not to hold 'freedom of speech' as an absolute. People should be allowed to express themselves freely Continued……... 5 Top Quality Fresh Milk and Dairy Products DELIVERED TO YOUR DOOR COMPREHENSIVE SHOPPING LIST ‘NOW ON LINE’ •OXFORD TIMES• www.milkandmore.co.uk Mike Tinson - Local Milkman GOAT & SOYA MILK NOW AVAILABLE Tel: 01865 792221 (Dairy) Tel: 01993 706843 (Home) Help! Matthew will be joining the Council at their next meeting in March and we very much look forward to welcoming him and wish him well in his new role. Memorial Trees I would like to confirm that all 15 memorial trees have now been planted along Wroslyn Road to commemorate the 15 Freeland residents who died during WW1 and WW2. The species of tree is a flowering hawthorn called Crataegeus prunifolia. The Council are planning to have a brass plaque attached to each tree, with the name of each person commemorated, who are as follows: WW1 – Arthur James Edgington, Edgar Merry, Lewis Ernest Merry, Walter Scraggs, William Slatter, Alfred Henry Smart, Basil Graham Taunton, Edward White. WW2 – Algy John Walker, Wilfred Long, Harry Smart, John Foreshew, Lawrence Lay, Alistair Conway Hill, William Berry. If anyone in the village would like to sponsor a memorial tree plaque in memory of a family member who fought in either of the two wars, please contact me on 01993 880067 or email lisa.fpc@gmail.com . The likely cost of each plaque will be £41.00. If you have a particular preference for a site then please also let me know, although we cannot guarantee which tree will have your plaque. The Parish Council wishes to extend its thanks once again to Robert Crocker for arranging the tree planting. I’m sure the trees will be a fantastic asset to the village and will give a beautiful display in years to come – a very fitting tribute to the fallen. Second Defibrillator for the village By the time this goes to press I am hopeful that the second defibrillator will have been installed inside the phone box on the corner of Parklands. I am now in the process of arranging some training so watch this space for further details. Annual Parish Meeting This is just a preliminary note to let you know that the Annual Parish Meeting will be held on Friday 24th April at 7.30pm in the Village Hall. Please make a note of the date and further details will follow next month. Preliminary topics for discussion are Saving the Methodist Chapel, Defibrillator Training, Memorial Trees and the outcome of the Community Led Plan. Daffodils With spring just around the corner the lovely daffodil bulbs are now starting to push through ready to display their beautiful bright cheery yellow flowers. Potholes It is that time of year again when potholes are appearing in the roads. If anyone spots a pothole you can report it by ringing the Oxfordshire Highways number on 0845 310 1111 or email highwayenquiries@oxfordshire.gov.uk or use the “Potholes report Online” (under “local Services”) on the Freeland Village Website – www.freelandoxon.co.uk Community Led Plan I would like to renew the request for receiving the names of volunteers for a working group to take forward items from the Community Led Plan such as the youth centre/ day centre and a village shop that were detailed in the last edition of the Grapevine. Please remember that the Community Led Plan is a wish list drawn up from your responses and requests for things that you would like to have in the village. Please do get involved! You can commit to as much or as little as you can offer, and meetings don’t have to be formal. Why not hold your first meeting in the village pub or around someone’s house? Tyrell It has been something of a mixed bag on the pitch for the club. The Firsts had wins over Bletchingdon and Marston, but lost out to OUP and Mansfield Road in successive weeks. Due to the two wins though we have moved away from the relegation zone, and hopefully we can stay well away from trouble for the rest of the season. The Reserves have been on a fine run though, and picked up a quick fire double over the village across the A40, one of those wins has seen the Ressies move into the Semi-Finals of the Clarendon Cup. In other news, we are joining forces with Freeland Pre-School to host a Music Quiz, please try and get along and support your local clubs. The quiz is on Saturday 7th March and will be at the village hall. See the advert on page 29. The club has finally got their away kit which will proudly have Sobell House Hospice on the front. The club raised the money through this with the Charity Cup held in 2014 and the help of SAS Scaffolding #TGGoals . This talk and the slides he showed however were exceptional. The subject was ‘Plant Hunting in Australia’, a trip that he and his wife had taken covering a large part of southern Australia. The collection of unusual and rare plants that he showed was amazing, many of which are hardly known outside that large continent. He also gave a lot of information about each area and its weather and features. With his added humour this was one of the best talks we have had. Howard Drury returns on 23rd February at 7.30pm in Freeland Hall, not with one of his excellent travel talks but to tell us about ‘The Fragrant Garden and its Plants’. With a new season nearly upon us this will be a useful guide to some of these plants we may think of adding to our gardens so that we can enjoy their lovely scents. A month later on Monday 23rd March another familiar speaker returns. Janet Cropley has come in previous years with very good advice because she had been gardening for many years. The Club also had an evening visit to her garden a few years ago. As Spring will be beginning, her talk ‘The Flowers that Bloom in the Spring’ will be a good way to hear more of these welcome flowers after the bleakness of winter. It will be too late to plant Spring bulbs but she is sure to give other ideas to welcome this lovely season. There is a day coach trip to Birmingham Botanic Gardens on Saturday 18th April which is already proving to be popular. Bookings are under way and many have already signed up so don’t delay contacting Brian Wildblood on 883968 or book at the next Gardening Club meeting if you would like to go. For more information and cost contact Brian. Visitors are very welcome. The Club had a visit to the Gardens many years ago which was really enjoyed. It will probably also have many lovely Spring flowers blooming. Thanks to the Gardening Club, the annual show of daffodils throughout the village are once again a great joy. New bulbs were added last October thanks to a kind donation by a family in the village. Visitors and new members always welcome at any Club meetings. For further information about the Gardening Club please contact Ray and Jill Evans at 99 Wroslyn Rd or ring 881420. Fortunately your intrepid reporter, who suffered some geographical disconnection, kept up with the action and was able to provide barely adequate catering services at the end of the 8 hour slog back at mission control. Complaints, which have now become an essential part of our rambles, have of course been made again; namely ‘who devised this ******* route?’ In this particular case we’d franchised the project out and frankly it’s very unlikely that the company will be getting paid. We are concerned that we were infiltrated by a mole on this ramble, enquiries are on going. Next exciting event: meet at The Oxfordshire Yeoman, 9.30am, Sunday 1st March. 29 The Witney Motor Co. Ltd. We learnt the distribution of blood and bodily fluids in the cases of stabbings, kickings and crimes of a sexual nature and the changes the discovery of DNA has made to Forensic Science. We were amazed at how long DNA can survive and that swabs are usually taken from the inside of the mouth. We were assured that the slides we were shown were in fact mocked up using paint rather than blood. We all agreed we had enjoyed an excellent evening even if we had missed Silent Witness on the TV. Our next meeting on March 9th will our first AGM, we are combining this with a late Christmas bring and share supper. We look forward to seeing you all at the AGM. In addition to being enjoyable social events the monthly meetings provide a catalyst for the formation of other formal or informal interest groups. The February meeting included a talk on 'Semiconductors' by Pete Leigh complete with artefacts he has gathered during his long career as a professional scientist. It was fascinating to be informed or reminded how this technology has changed our lives over the last fifty years. The next meeting will be in early April (date to be finalised) and will feature what promises to be an equally enjoyable talk by Martin Shann entitled 'King Kong - why cinema loves apes'. This is a tale of adventurers, moguls, and a famous author of detective stories duped by an archaeological forgery. Martin will illustrate his talk using clips from early 20th Century films. Membership of Men's Net is free and involves no commitment, other than the willingness to provide as much or as little information about yourself as you wish, to be shared among all the members. Please contact me by email for further details or come along to a meeting and introduce yourself. The more men sign up, the greater the potential value to us all. Colin Smith csmithprivate@hotmail.com ***************************************** THE FREELAND PHOTO GROUP The 17th February saw the second meeting of the embryonic group. Martin Shann took on the task of describing how light is captured on silicon within our cameras and phones to produce a digital photograph. A truly challenging talk as this was one that ventured into the world, the less than clear world for most of us, of physics. Never-the-less Martin did a great job and all enjoyed the talk. We also looked at and discussed a number of shots taken by our members. Finally, we have started a Flickr Group for our members. Our next meeting will be at 7.30pm on the 17th March in the Newell Room, details from either Bruce Hammersley at brucehammersley@gmail.com or Martin Shann at martin@shann.org 33 34 WOMEN’S WORLD DAY OF PRAYER Freeland Methodist Chapel Friday 6th March at 10.00am. RED ARROW VOLUNTEER DRIVERS WANTED A local charity is looking for volunteer drivers for a pilot project helping people live well and successfully after a spell in hospital. The aim of the Circles of Support project, which runs until May 2015, is to ensure ex-patients are supported in their activities, helping to build relationships and reduce isolation. This might involve journeys to see friends, families, lunch clubs, etc, and this is where a volunteer driver - who will be reimbursed for mileage (this will not affect your insurance) - will help. This year, the 25th anniversary of the event, saw many of our group complete the course. The Beavers and Cubs course is a 9 mile hike along the Ridgeway in South Oxfordshire, although there is an option to do the full 18 miles with the Scouts and Explorers. The event was a great success and the weather was kind, especially considering how cold it had been leading up to the event. A big ‘well done’ goes out to all the hikers and a huge ‘thank you’ to all the organisers and helpers on the day. Beavers have welcomed five new members to the colony this year and activities so far have included woggle bag making and a treasure hunt. After half-term the Beavers will be working towards the new photography activity badge and will also experience a self-defence session with Sensei Barry. As representatives of the youngest section of the troop, we’d like to especially applaud Daniel Yates, Benjamin Hills, Daisy Edwards, Harry Trimble, Ewan Auton and Arthur Quartermain for completing the Winter Challenge but a special mention goes to Beth Soanes who managed to complete the full 18 miles, ably keeping up with her brothers from the cubs and scouts! Cubs have been working on their first aid awareness by adding CPR to their skill set, with the help of Beth Elger who brought along CPR dummies to a recent session. The cubs have also been dealing with disability awareness including a very informative visit by Matthew Smith, who brought along his hearing dog, Chloe. During this session the children all learnt to sign their own name using letters of the alphabet. On the last session before half term, the cubs went on another informative visit, this time to the Oxford Synagogue to build on their community challenge award and their world faith activity badge. The Scouts have welcomed two new members to the troop who have come up from cubs this year. It’s been an ideal time to refresh everyone on some of the basics such as; the troop rules, the scout law and the scout promise. There has also been an evening learning how to iron and roll a necker, cleaning shoes and how to sew on a badge! There has been work towards the musician staged activity badges and sporting activity badges and after the half term break, a diverse range of activities are planned - from a night hike to cake decorating! The Explorers have been heavily involved with the Winter Challenge, but at the time of writing this month’s report, the information about the money raised and the causes it will support was not available. We will report back fully next month. Also next month, we plan to report on the trip to Switzerland. A small number of our Scouts and Explorers spent the February half-term at the Kandersteg International Scout Centre (KISC) with the aim to complete the KISC Snow Adventure Award. This report was written 2 days before they were due to leave, so make sure you check back next month to see how they all got on! COMBE MILL UPDATE www.combemill.org 16 KS1 Children from Wootton by Woodstock School visited on Friday 23th January. They saw a short film of felling the 'One Oak' tree on Blenheim Estate and then handled Victorian wooden products including cart wheels, gates and fences. Our experienced carpenter, Tony Thurlby made table legs on the turning machine and a small hay rake and a fence panel from split hazel. Mervyn M. taught them to drill and saw. The children visited Barlow's timber yard to see modern wooden products including log stores and a hedgehog house! Walking in the Forest Trail with David Baldwin they identified Poplar, Willow, Sitka Spruce and Ash trees and learned how they were planted, cared for and finally harvested. The morning visit was rounded off with mugs of cocoa served around our fire pit. The cost of the hall is more than the members’ donations. BUT the Club voted on a suggestion that we meet in The Yeoman on the 1st Tuesday of the month at Noon for lunch and a chat, so we can still meet and keep our friendships. Trevor, the landlord, has said that he’s very happy to have us, and suggested soup and sandwiches. So the first Tuesday of March will be the 3rd March. To use up the cash in the account, all members have been invited to lunch at the Windmill on Thursday 5th March - lifts have been arranged. The remainder of the cash will be donated to the Memorial Trees for the village. Sam French, a very polite and able young man, has been helping with serving teas and generally chatting to us, as part of his Duke of Edinburgh award scheme. If we are still chatting when he gets off the school bus, his mum suggested he come in and say hello to us. I do hope as many of the Tuesday Club members as possible will meet in The Yeoman on the 1st Tuesday of the month, as I would be very sad to lose friendships and contact with you all.
