Journeying Through Lent
In the last two newsletters I
have spoken of our journey
through Lent and encouraged
families to focus on one of the
three Lenten traditions - prayer. This
week I would encourage all families to

of Almsgiving, when we open ourselves

(Each week in 2015 a member of our St Pius community will be selected to receive the Principal’s Ice Cream
Award. The award will acknowledge the recipient’s contribution to the school community that reflects the
spirit of Mary MacKillop. Aside from receiving a certificate the recipient will receive a voucher for a medium

Staff Commitment to Student Safety and Enjoyment
This week six St Pius members of staff undertook their training in
Aquatics Supervision. Generously giving their own time after school,
this involvement reflects our commitment to support student safety and
well-being, maximise the use of our facilities and bring fun to the school
day. A big thank you to the staff members who joined myself as we
tested and extended our aquatic fitness and skills, having good fun at
the same time!
Prep 2016 Enrolments
As per last week’s Newsletter, we are currently accepting applications for Prep 2016. Please, if this involves your
family, or you know of friends who have a child who will be eligible to enrol, visit the school website or contact the
office as soon as possible. We will commence conducting interviews in March.

Children born 1 July 2010 to 30 June 2011 are eligible for Prep in 2016. Some parents / carers you may have heard
that students who turn 5 by the end of July the year they start Prep are now eligible to enrol. Acceptance is not automatic and is only at the discretion of the Principal. I have included information which may help you to make your decision if you are considering applying to enrol your child early for Prep.
When do children start Prep in Queensland?
Queensland children are eligible to attend the Preparatory Year (Prep) if they will reach the age of 5 years by 30
June in the year they propose to attend Prep.
Who is eligible for early entry to Prep in Queensland?
Children whose birthday falls in the month of July, and children who have previously enrolled at school in another
state or country, may be able to commence Prep early if they are assessed by the school principal as being ready
for school.
These are the only circumstances in which early entry to Prep is permitted under Queensland legislation.
How do you decide if a child is ‘ready for school’?
If your child will turn 5 years of age in July or has previously attended school in another state or country and you are
considering applying for early entry to Prep, the principal at the school at which you are intending to enrol will need
to decide whether or not your child is ready for school.
The principal’s decision will be based on your child’s attributes including ability, aptitude, social and emotional competence, physical development, and level of knowledge and understanding.
The principal may consider things such as whether your child can:
• confidently make choices/decisions and follow through
• make several attempts to complete a new or challenging experience before seeking help
• actively seek and accept help from familiar and unfamiliar adults
• recall past experiences, events, or discussions
• talk confidently, including expressing feelings and ideas, to familiar and unfamiliar people
• demonstrate coping skills and resilience when things don’t go to plan
• interact appropriately with other children and adults
• cope well with separation from parents or carers for the duration of a school day
• confidently use fine and gross motor skills to complete tasks
• sustain active involvement in challenging experiences
• monitor and manage their own physical needs (e.g. toileting)
• sustain energy and display endurance across the learning and routine expectations of a school day
• apply knowledge from past learning to a new learning situation
• use a variety of vocabulary when classifying, sorting, sequencing and comparing everyday materials and objects
• use language associated with, and show understanding of, spatial positions and directions
• handle a book and recognise some letters, numbers and symbols (i.e. is familiar with printed material).
In making a decision, the principal will consider what is in your child’s best interests for achieving success throughout their schooling. While a child may be extremely capable in certain areas of knowledge or have high levels of skill,
they might not have the social or emotional maturity for early entry to Prep.
A July birthday or previous school enrolment in another state or country does not guarantee early entry to Prep in
Queensland.

Prep Green Builders
Prep Green have been closely following the building outside our windows this term.
Our construction wall story is recording all we see. On Friday we decided to enter the building
game.
First we put up safety fences and signs. Then we drew plans with the help of our buddies.
After that we were very busy building houses, train stations and towns. So much fun!

Project Compassion
Over the next few days your child will bring home a sponsorship/donation card for the, ‘Hour of Power’ walk that is being
held on Thursday, 2nd April, 9-10am. It is our fund raising venture for Caritas. Each class is raising money to buy a certain
item for disadvantaged communities (like chickens, water
pumps, books etc). The children, staff and parents will walk
around the block of the school for about one hour, clocking up
Kilometres for Compassion. Our aim at St Pius is to raise as
much money as we can for the poor and disadvantaged in our
world. WE KNOW THAT WE CAN DO IT. We are all called to share a little of what
we have with others who have so much less. So ask family, friends and neighbours
to sponsor our children. All money raised can be sent straight to the class teacher or
the office. We will be asking for volunteers in the next week or two.

Google Hangout
Last week, Year Five joined a Google Hangout with six other schools across
Australia. We talked to Eric and Ma from Fiji.
We were all very excited. Everyone was waving at the camera to Ma and Eric so
that they would give that school some attention.
At the beginning, the technology wasn’t so good because we couldn’t hear
them. After about ten minutes, it was working and we asked our questions about
what life was like before and after Caritas helped them. I really enjoyed how Eric
and Ma took the time to link up with our schools.
It was great because it was a once in a lifetime opportunity and now we know
some of the real people we are helping.

Pastoral Care Meeting
Last Tuesday night the Pastoral Care Parent group for 2015 held
its first meeting. We are truly blessed with the supportive, caring
parent body we have at this school. Thank you to the parents who
attended this meeting. The Pastoral Care parents have requested
that all parents return the contact details sheet that was sent out
with their letter of introduction. With this contact list, the Pastoral Care Parents can let
you know when they have organised a class play in the park, or a parent social gathering, or if there is need of assistance for a family who requires support.

On the 27th of February St Pius helped clean up the
school. In ten minutes we filled two bins and nine bags of
leaves and rubbish that was laying around.

A fairly quiet week this week in sport and PE. Training for the Zone swimming carnival went really well. Lots of students braved the early morning start to put in the extra effort for our team. Can’t wait to see you all swim on the day.

Training days are Friday 6th March and Tuesday 10th March. Training will start at
7.30am. As this will be part of the team building process for the school and team, I

There are a number of Bramble Bay District trials coming up. Any students wishing
to attend any of the trials below will need to see me for more information.
Please remember that the Bramble Bay District trials are very competitive, any student wishing to put forward a nomination should be playing or competing in that
sport in a club or representative team in the highest division. The school will make
the final decision on whether to put forward the students nominations based on
their experience and level. Students that are nominated will receive paperwork from
the school to be completed and taken to the trial.

Bushfoods Guest Speaker – John Wrench
Last Wednesday, classes that visited the library
were entertained by our friend John, a retired senior pharmacist, bushfood educator, poet, writer,
propagator, bushfood experimenter, wildlife protagonist, and bushcare worker. John is humble
man who has been a recipient of various environment awards. The children marvelled at the specimens John brought in, including a native grape
vine, that once cut and blown through, provides
enormous amounts of water! Children also snavelled up the leaves of the Backhousia Citriodora
(Lemon Myrtle) and the Syzygium anisatum (Anise
Myrtle), both of which provided a truly beautiful
perfume in the library. John uses both the aforementioned leaves in his tea morning and night.
We all could not help but marvel at this man’s
wealth of knowledge, love of the bush and incredi-

St Patrick’s College ursary Opportunity

The Banyo Homework Club is recommencing next week on Wednesday
the 11th of February 2015, from 3pm to 5pm at the Banyo Public Library.
The club provides one on one or small group tutoring free of charge, to
aid and assist students with their homework in a fun, positive and safe
environment.

of their bachelor’s degrees.
