I appreciated the question, because many have quit asking what God is doing in the world. They have come to the conclusion that God isn’t doing anything in the world, just watching from heaven. Isn’t that better than believing God is responsible for everything happening in the world, good and bad? There are other ways to understand what God is doing. God established and enforces the laws that govern all events. God created the world in such a way that God’s plans and purposes will ultimately be fulfilled, even though God has given us the freedom to reject and resist God’s will in day to day living. If we entrust our lives to God’s providential care, God will make certain that His will for our lives will be fulfilled both now and into eternity. Jeremiah 29:11 (NIV) Third Sunday Of Lent March 8, 2015 LECTIONARY READINGS Exodus 20:1-17 Psalm 19 UMH 750 1 Corinthians 1:18-25 John 2: 13-22 We rely on many things in this world: water and food for nourishment, homes for shelter, friends for companionship, family for love, accomplishment for security, and acceptance for significance. With all this world has to offer, why do we need to rely on God for anything? The band Caedmon’s Call put it well when they sang: “This world has nothing for me and this world has everything. All that I could want and nothing I need.” They are right; the world has everything we could want. At the end of the day, though, everything the world offers will eventually let us down, run dry, or leave us empty. Don’t be fooled! Stay centered on the urging to know and rely on the love God has for you. God’s love is the only thing in the world that will never fail, never leave, and never falter. Don’t just know God; rely on God. When everyone and everything else fails, your God remains faithful and strong – your mighty warrior, greatest lover; and truest friend. What in this world do you rely on that potentially could let you down? Do you know God, or do you know AND rely on God? Until Next time . . .
