A number of politicians and local Education Queensland Principals and Regional Directors were in attendance. Cecilia is enjoying her studies at the University of Queensland and was very grateful toward the teachers who assisted her in her studies. Well done Cecilia! Next Saturday the Rugby League Academy is running the inaugural Tonie Carrol Cup for Year 7 students. Tonie represented Australia, New Zealand, Queensland and the Broncos and was also named in the Australian Secondary Schools Team of the Century from his days as a student at Beenleigh SHS. Tonie has been happy to add his name to this comp and we have 15 teams nominated. Games will commence at Bill Norris Oval on Saturday March 21 from 8.30. All are welcome to attend. Over the last couple of weeks we have been visiting classrooms to assess the programs that we run and review our teaching practices. As in the past we are continuing to use classroom walkthroughs and internet technology. We receive a range of good information to continue our development of the way we teach. The feedback our staff receives allows us to build continuous improvement into our teaching. At P& C each month I present an aspect of our school program. Mrs Maggie Walker – CEO ASDAN UK – visited our school last Friday to see the operation of ASDAN at Beenleigh. Mrs Walker was excited about the program we are running and complimented our staff on the excellent way in which we are providing opportunities to our students under the ASDAN banner. We have had a number of students selected in South Coast teams and it is great to see our students performing well at a regional sports level. See inside for details. NAPLAN practice tests are about to start and this year we are also preparing our year 7 cohort. We encourage parents to talk to their children about the test and the need to do their best. QCS preparations and practice tests are also ongoing and are an essential component of the year 12 lead up to the QCS test in early September. http://publish.newsserv.com.au/epublisher/printfriendly.php?id=214748456929&scho... 13/03/2015 Beenleigh State High School Newsletter Page 3 of 35 Parent Teacher Night is on the Tuesday 28 April from 3:00- 6:00pm. The Year 11 Tourism class recently enjoyed an excursion to SeaWorld on the Gold Coast as part of their course and assessment for term 1. The day began well with a bus ride to Southport. On the trip down all eyes were out the windows searching the skies and wishing away the rain that could potentially limit their ‘learning experiences’ for the day, but thankfully it never came. The first item on the agenda was an educational talk from the staff at Sea World discussing all things Tourism. From information on target markets, rides and shows all the way to employment opportunities our students were exemplary in their engaged and respectful behaviour. They certainly weren’t shy when it came to question time either! Of course, its one thing to understand the theory behind something but what good is it if you don’t experience it for yourself! The students took that opportunity with both hands, exploring the park, the rides, shows and attractions all while representing the school in very positive fashion. They even managed to con a poor vulnerable tourism teacher to ride on the rollercoaster whilst strategically sitting me in the ‘wet seat’ (all in the name of education of course!). It was a fantastic day and I know it will only be a matter of time before we see one of our Tourism students getting flipped in the air by a dolphin or sending us to our doom on the dreaded Storm Coaster! What do you think they were doing at school today??? Year 12 Tourism says,”Who cares, we are having a blast”! After dropping the Year 11 Tourism class off at Sea World, Year 12 Tourism continued to explore the Gold Coast from top to bottom. Staring with a walk on the Spit Sea Wall we moved down the Sky Point Tower on the 77th floor of the Q1 high rise. While there we had spectacular 360 degree views of the entire coast, as well as displays and a short film on the history of tourism on the Gold Coast. Continuing down the coast we stopped at the North Burleigh Surf Club for a tour of the club and a filling lunch. Then we went to the Coolangatta YHA at Bilinga, the first ever youth hostel in Queensland. We were given the keys to the hostel and allowed to explore http://publish.newsserv.com.au/epublisher/printfriendly.php?id=214748456929&scho... 13/03/2015 Beenleigh State High School Newsletter Page 7 of 35 the site and learn how young people can travel the world on a budge. Finally we stopped atop Point Danger and could see yet more amazing views and surprise the students with how far we had travelled in one day. We even had the good luck to see a surf competition. Returning to the Spit we had a quick stop at the Surfers Paradise YHA hostel and then collected a very happy group of Year 11 Tourism students. When it is fun you learn! Well done to all! At the beginning of the year, students participated in quite a lot of diagnostic testing in order to place them into the right groupings for their current level of expertise. Everyone has now settled into routine and we are well into our stride with students engaging in meaningful but fun lessons. Each class completes two literacy lessons per week; one which focuses on reading and the other on writing. The reading lesson takes place in our specifically designed reading room and the students rotate in small groups through a number of activities including comprehension, reciprocal teaching and also some reading conferencing. Within the writing lesson, students are learning about the importance of structuring great paragraphs using the TEEL (yes you can google that one!) strategy. This has involved them creating their own topic sentences, going on a ‘gallery walk’ around the classroom to read and identify elaborating sentences and distinguishing the difference between fact and opinion. We look forward to seeing the students’ literacy skills excel as the year progresses. By Ms Raudon-Hill - ASDAN Co-ordinator INTERNATIONAL WOMEN'S DAY On Tuesday 3 March, an International Women’s Day event was held at the Marriott Hotel in Brisbane. The ‘Make It Happen’ High Tea was attended by two Grade 11 students, Chelsea Peace and Tameka Clarke. The students were fortunate enough to hear from some inspirational Australian women. Madeline Price, a finalist in the Queensland Young Australian of the Year Award 2015, spoke passionately about gender equality and the power each of us holds to make a difference in the world around us. Madeline shared her experience of ‘making it happen’ in the face of complacency and negativity. She has now established and runs the One Woman Project, which empowers young people to create sustainable change. Alyssa Azar inspired the audience with her story of setting and achieving her goals. At age 8, she was the youngest person to trek the Kokoda Track; at age 14, she climbed Mt Kilimanjaro. Now aged 18, Alyssa Azar aims to become Australia’s youngest ever person to summit Mt Everest when she heads there in a few short weeks. Alyssa’s determination to pursue her dreams, in spite of tragedy and setbacks, is an inspiration to us all. http://publish.newsserv.com.au/epublisher/printfriendly.php?id=214748456929&scho... 13/03/2015 Beenleigh State High School Newsletter Page 19 of 35 The event reinforced the power of both women and men to ‘make it happen’ – whatever ‘it’ may be! All students completed the BYOD Option form to indicate which option they were selecting for 2015. They also completed the BYOD RUP (responsible use policy) which students signed to agree to use all technology at Beenleigh SHS appropriately at all times. Those forms would have come home with your child, please sign these and return to the Laptop Coordinator. Students spent time with the technicians going through the appropriate steps to connect to the school wifi. Please remember that during 8am-4pm the school network does have restricted access preventing students from accessing inappropriate learning websites. By week 5, Friday 28th February, every student must have selected which option they will participate in for 2015. Students are required to bring their device to school every day for learning purposes. Called SenseAbility, the program is aimed at building resilience in young people, to help them manage the life challenges that are an inevitable part of growing up. The program is part of our school’s commitment to the understanding that teachers, in partnership with parents, have a significant role in promoting good mental health in their students. SenseAbility will be delivered to students by our teachers and will provide a range of skills to empower students to care for their own wellbeing. The program takes a strengths‐based approach. Instead of focusing on negatives and things that don’t work, it assists young people to focus on the unique characteristics and qualities they have, but are inclined to ignore or downplay. How often do your children comment on the things they can’t do? A strengths‐based approach does not require individuals to excel or perform in particular areas, rather it encourages them to acknowledge and appreciate the small things they do in their everyday lives ‐ such as being a good friend, being responsible and demonstrating small acts of kindness that reflect underlying valuable qualities. The program also encourages young people to develop good help‐seeking skills for themselves and others, so they can obtain assistance if challenges are too difficult for them to manage alone. Many of the activities will give students the opportunity to practice breaking down their thoughts in the following way: http://publish.newsserv.com.au/epublisher/printfriendly.php?id=214748456929&scho... 13/03/2015 Beenleigh State High School Newsletter Page 30 of 35 The program will also allow students to work individually and cooperatively with their peers, thus developing their ability to build relationships and enhance their connection to school. These are vital elements to improving your child’s sense of self and belonging. Parents and guardians are encouraged to discuss the SenseAbility lessons at home with their children so that all students understand that the significant people in their lives have an important part to play in their wellbeing. Parents and guardians are welcome to look at the materials in this program by visiting www.beyondblue.org.au/senseability. On this magnet there are two interactive icons. The first is a QR code and when you use any QR reader app you will find some instructions about how to access our Aurasma channel. This is a free augmented reality app which we are using more and more of throughout 2015. We are encouraging the students within their lessons to create their own videos to engage with our displays within the school grounds. The second icon on the magnet can be scanned using Aurasma and will direct you to the latest addition of the newsletter. Therefore you can keep it on the fridge and always have access to the latest news from our wonderful school. By Mrs Wonnacott-Wakeham – Head of Curriculum Teacher Instruction CLICK HERE FOR THE PDF INSTRUCTIONS OF AURASMA EMAIL ADDRESSES Communication between parents/caregivers and staff is very important to all members of staff at the Beenleigh High School. We are asking parents/caregivers to provide their email address to the school via the school email address: info@beenleighs.eq.edu.au Teachers want to use this form of communication also for sending student assessment and progress throughout the year. The school newsletter is also sent via email on a fortnightly basis. In using email we are all also helping our environment with less paper being used in printing of the school newsletter.
