Moksha, also called nirvana or kaivalya, is a core concept of the Hindu faith
that is also shared by other dharmic religions such as Jainism, Budhism and
Sikhism. It is one of the four goals of a Hindu’s life which include: artha, karma, dharma and moksha. Moksha is mukti or emancipation - a release from
endless cycle of rebirth, disease and death - and is a state of perfection and
bliss achieved through unity with Brahman. The scriptures state that moksha
can be achieved in this life (Jivan-mukti) or in the afterlife (Videha-mukti). A
jivanmukta person is sthitpradnya – calm, firm, dispassionate, selfless and
fearless. Such a person is detached and hence untouched by worldly joys and
sorrows.
Our scriptures show us how to achieve such a state. The Vedic tradition lays
emphasis on performance of yagna, sacrifices and mantras to achieve salvation. The Upanishads define moksha as a realization that the nirgun nirakar
omniprsent Brahman is within you. Attainment and full comprehension of this
secret is the first step to achieve freedom. Such is the path to Atama-Gnyan
taught to Nachiketa by Lord Yama in Katho-upanishad and described by Adi
Sankaracharya in the verses of Vivekachudamani. Patanjali’s Yoga Sutra also
suggests that the dissolution of avidya, or ignorance is the path to Kaivalyam.
Bhakti marg and the Vaishnav revival of Hinduism has given us another path
to moksha which does not need rituals, mantras, meditation or knowledge –
just constant selfless devotion and contemplation of God. Moksha is possible
when the bhakta surrenders ones self-identity and becomes one with God.
The love of God is of such intensity that one is disconnected from all worldly
reality. For most of us who go through life trying to fulfill commitments to family
and community, it is the path of dharma which should guide us in our quest for
perfection.
In stark contrast to the concept of Moksha is the religious doctrine of being
“saved” and going to heaven, which is central to Abrahamic religions. A central tenet in Judaism, Christianity and Islam is the Day of Judgment when the
“saved” will be spared the wrath of God and eternal damnation in Hell and instead will get eternal pleasures of heaven. The saved are either the chosen
(in Judaism) or those who accept a Savior or Messiah. The bedrock of Christian faith is therefore a belief that the acceptance of Jesus is the only way to
avoid hell.
Moksha is certainly not a heaven-like place full of material pleasures. It is
state of mind / soul which is liberated and detached from earthly joys and sorrows. This journey to get there needs internal evolution and self-realization.
The first step in this journey is to recognize the Brahman within. This itself is
not an easy task, and those who are not ready are reborn so their journey can
continue.

Senior Committee
General meetings:


At our meeting on February 10, we had a very informative talk by Ms. Swati Godbole, a practicing Physical Therapist, about
managing Knee pain, and preventing fall. In the afternoon volunteers participated in making dozens of pillows to be given to
Child patients at Wakemed Hospital.
Our next scheduled meeting will be on February 22. Mr. Mrs. Usha Dev will share their experience of partition days.
 Valentine’s Day was celebrated with dinner and dancing at Tandoor restaurant. Forty members enjoyed dancing to the tune of Waltz, Garba, Bhangra and
Square Dancing.
Weekly meets
I am pleased to inform that Senior club has added a one more program complimentary to our music lessons. On every Thursday’s music lovers participate in
singing devotional songs while learning and appreciating the ragas and sargam
on which these Bhajans are based. Contact Ambrish Vyas – 919 380 7725 if interested. Interest in playing and learning game of Bridge and “56” is growing.
Last week about 25 seniors participated.

Pillows to be donated to Wakemed hospital
Internal Review Committee (IRC)
Objectives of the committee is to review the HSNC financial processes such as cash counting, payments, donation/receipts, payroll, etc. Committee Members are:

Board of Trustees Relations Committee
Periodic engagement with BOT members has generated the need of assessment for a few essential elements between the BOD
and BOT. Arrangements for a retreat are progressing well and tentatively scheduled for March with a team building exercise likely
in place for April.
Inclusion / Hospitality Committee
Our mission is to promote inclusion of the new comers in the area , elevate awareness among the new comer’s inclusion and help
them in participating and within the community, relating to their interest, language, social habits and social preferences so they can
become active members and this help in building the image of the HSNC.
Activities :
 Organize an Inclusion/Hospitality Information Sessions for New Comers.
 Increase awareness about HSNC, the benefits and how HSNC serves your family and the community at large.
 Provide support and help.

Facilities Committee
We have created a benefit package for all HSNC employees and will include incremental tiers reflected by their performance. For
safety and accountability purposes, our team has established an “In/Out” log for all vendors. This past quarter, we completed a full
facility safe walk and developed POA and template for F/U and annual checks. To comply with regulations, we are currently developing an evacuation plan to ensure safety of visitors and members and plan to conduct walk through on a monthly basis, starting in
April. All HSNC employees will receive fire training shortly and the facility manager will participate in an annual safety training program starting in 2015.
Vision 20/20 Committee
We have proactively divided our Bharat into 6 regions and contacted 2 people within each area who have meaningfully contributed
to HSNC. We continued to connect with the young adults (aged 20 to 30) including 4-6 key members. Our goal is to specifically
work with young adults and member’s children who we expect to serve the society long term and take the reins in the future. Our
ultimate goal is to have a brainstorming session with members of different origins (and not age dependent). Due to scheduling
conflicts we anticipate launching in April. If you are interested to engage in this endeavor, please contact us.
Volunteer Committee
Promote the values of Servicing by providing Sevaks for needs within and outside of Hindu Society of North Carolina, and to
make the process easy for people providing Seva and requiring Sevaks.
The volunteer committee has prepared the process of accepting volunteering requests and sharing the information of available volunteers with all the HSNC committees. The volunteer request form will be updated on the HSNC website by the end of
Feb’15. All volunteers will have to sign a liability waiver form before participating in any HSNC volunteer activities. The committee utilizing volunteer services will assign a supervisor to update the volunteer activity logs.
Religious Committee Update
Proposed plan to implement free Archana once during calendar year for HSNC Life Members
HSNC Religious committee has a proposed plan to implement free Archana for HSNC Life Members. Each life member will
get to do Archana on the deity and day of his choice once during calendar year. Archana will be done along with the morning
pooja or after the evening arati (if the member wishes to attend in person). Feasibility of implementation is under review
HSNC Members to get discounts over Pooja Service Charges for in-Temple and at Home Poojas
From April 1, HSNC Members will get discount on pooja Service charges for In-Temple and At-Home Poojas. Revised charges are as shown below.
Monthly Satyanaryan Katha charges in the temple have also been revised to $15
Mandatory use of Temple Priest for all religious poojas and ritual services being conducted in HSNC Facility
From April 1 onwards, it will be mandatory for all renters, renting HSNC Temple or Cultural hall to use services of HSNC
Priest. HSNC Pooja charges will need to be paid even if any external priest is hired.
Sai Temple and Main Hall Security
For security reasons, Sai Temple will be open to devotees during the following times each day: 10:30 am - 12:00 noon &
6:30 pm to 8:00 pm. Access to Sai Temple will be only through the Cultural Hall entrance. Side door access will be closed.
Facility Coordinator will be onsite in the premises whenever the Cultural Hall facility is being used.
New Priest Hire
HSNC will be recruiting new priest. If any members or devotees have any recommendations, they can send the same to Prasad Satghare (Email – psatghare@gmail.com).
Temple Side Entrance to be used as Emergency Exit only
Starting Mar 1, Temple Main Entrance will be through the Porch. Temple side entrance will be only an emergency exit and
will be open during rental events. Ramp for wheelchairs is plan to be built near the Handicap parking lot.

HSNC Learning Committee
This is a newly formed committee to support a new initiative of creating a platform/forum to understand various
“learnings” offered by the HSNC affiliated and non-affiliated Indian organizations; promoting Hindu/Indian culture, scriptures, languages, health and spiritual practices, etc. in the Triangle area; their needs, challenges and resource requirements. Then, formulate a mission/vision/strategy with objectives and goals that provide equal and fair opportunity to
these organizations to continue to grow and meet their objectives/goals while fulfilling community needs with a consistent and sustained service with focus on enhancing learning experience for the 2nd generation and the community
members at-large. Next, create a mutual/consistent understanding and agreement between HSNC and all affiliated/
non-affiliated organizations to ensure the learning/classes offered are sustained for many years and benefits the society and future generations for long time. Last, but not least, identify any gaps, do benchmarking and share best practices across organizations to continue to improve quality of programs offered and learning experience for next generation.

Go Green Committee
HSNC Go Green committee met couple of weeks back. Mrs Pinky Topiwala, Mrs Manisha Kode, Mrs Sudha
Rathie, Mr. Amit Kulkarni, Mr.
Ramesh Vora and Mr Haresh Tanna
attended the meeting.
The HSNC Going Green initiative is
to be launched on the auspicious day
of Maha Shivaratri. To start with
HSNC will begin recycling its own
waste, including paper products,
plastic bottles etc.
The committee will also spread the
awareness of benefits of recycling
amongst the patrons with the help of
youth volunteers from Om squad and
RTPMM Youth wing.
The next steps would be to facilitate
the banning of Styrofoam products
and increase awareness of stacking
plates and reducing waste.
Longer term goals are to formulate
policies to enable people to recycle
old idols in a manner that respects
the religious sentiments and concerns for the environment.
The committee planned to meet
monthly to monitor progress and
think of new ideas about going
green.

Feeling on the Top of the world!

Congratulations to all India fans who witnessed the Indian victory in the last two games! Thanks for the support and
appreciation of HSNC’s free event for entire community. Every Indian Cricket fan who watched 1986 Australia Cup’s
last ball sixer by Javed Miyandad, understands what it means to win the match against an arch rival team. That one
shot not only took the cup away from India but it made history. Till that moment India used to preserve the gentlemen’s
game of cricket as legacy of British Raj. It used to be a game played between two admirable teams full of talented
players. The complicated twists and turns of the game were enjoyed, discussed and revered for years to come by
cricket lovers. But from that moment on, the things changed. Gone were those days of showing overt courtesy, shyness, modesty. Others use to laugh at this attitude as Indian weakness, casualness or spinelessness.
Sachin Tendulkar and every young boy in India who watched that game had only one dream from that day onwards
and that was India’s Victory or rather more clearly ‘Defeat of Pakistan’. No other motivation was larger than this, not
even winning ‘World-Cup’. They worked hard. They stood united. They forgot individual records and charts when it
came to playing against Pakistan. ‘Giving one’s everything and even more’, need not have to be taught to the Indian
team anymore. Truly, ‘World Champions’ were born on that day. Credit of which goes to Mr. Javed Miyandad, a great
cricketer and in true sense a Hero, who set example for Indian team.
There is hardly any country as diverse as India. Over thousands of years, the customs, food, languages have formed
many differences in our culture. We all proudly preserve them. We celebrate them. That is our strength. But it has been
historically exploited as our weakness, too. It is truly easy for someone to part wedges amongst us. After all that Indians went through over centuries, we need to understand and learn some hard lessons from it. Our diversity can be
drawn on numerous lines like religions, casts, languages, states, districts and even villages. It never ends.
Here we are all in United States of America. The magic of freedom of choice, prosperity and career or whatever
brought us here, we are now part of this great nation. As Hindus we have gratitude for the land which feeds us and provides us the water we drink. We serve and pay our dues towards the nation, by serving in our own fields, contributing
our talent and hard work towards larger community projects and strengthening the community. We are no more people
from specific states or regions in India but Americans first and then may be American Indians, American Nepalese,
American Fijians etc. At HSNC our devotees and members find their roots originating in South Africa, Caribbean and
almost all parts of the world. Now we are truly only American Hindus.
I sincerely hope that we don’t need to bother Mr. Miyandad again to teach us what it takes to achieve higher goals. We
stay united under umbrella of HSNC. There might be lingering thoughts of difference between individuals from different
states or of different casts and creeds in some minds, but we must brush them aside. There are no more North or
South Indians living here. There are only American Hindus working shoulder to shoulder for betterment of our community. We need to stand united for our culture, philosophies as well as our adopted land.
We are committed to make Hindu Society of North Carolina as a society for All American people of Hindu and Affiliated
faiths. All are welcome!
Board of Trustees Corner
The first two formal meetings of the Board of Trustees were held on January 11 and February 8, at which the President, Neeraj Agrawal, the Treasurer, Manoj Pandya, the BOD’s liaison, Sudha Rathie, and the Finance Committee
chair, Prasad Satghare, were in attendance. In addition to the general reports and dialogue on miscellaneous issues,
detailed discussions were held on (1) the construction of the learning center, (2) current constitution issues, and pieces
of it needing examining and updating, (3) the need for developing a working but simple understanding (statement) on
the roles of the Directors and the Trustees, with focus on optimizing dependency and collaboration, and (4) management of finances, with the aim at safeguarding the assets and making accounting simpler and optimally transparent.
Several visionary ideas, including Vision 2020, were also brought forth by the Directors.
The trustees meet every month; next meeting will be held on Sunday, March 22, 2015, 2 PM

Introducing Shanti Yog
Please join us for weekly meditation practice at the Sai Baba room of the HSNC hall. It will help you with the following:
1. Physical well being - become healthier, lower your heart rate, and improve your immune system,
2. Emotional well being- become happier and confident. 3. Spiritual well being - peaceful 4. Become more focused
Mondays 6:30 - 7:30 PM in the Sai baba (meditation room) room at the HSNC hall.
Please bring your yoga mat or blanket.
