PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE
Last Wednesday I was delighted to host the first
Principal’s Morning Tea for 2015. Students must earn
20 merits in order to be invited. It was our biggest
morning tea since I have been at the school, with more
than 90 students in attendance. Congratulations to
those students and thank you for working so hard in
your lessons, and being such great representatives of
Nowra High School. I look forward to seeing even more
students at the event in Term 2.
A huge congratulations to Samantha Peace from Year
11, who has been selected in the Australian Track and
Field Team for the 9th IAAF World Youth Championships
to be held in Cali, Columbia in July of this year. This
selection is the culmination of an outstanding season of
athletic performances resulting in selection for these
championships. We are all incredibly proud of you Sam,
and wish you every success!
Well done to all of the competitors at our Cross
Country Carnival last Friday. It was a great day of fun
and exercise for everyone involved. Thanks to Miss
Little, our carnival organiser, and all of the other staff
who played a role on the day. A huge thank you also to
our wonderful House Captains who showed great
leadership and enthusiasm.
I would like to welcome to Nowra High School Ms
Vivienne Bochnek, who has been appointed to our
Special Education Faculty. Ms Bochnek will be teaching
our Tutorial class this year. I am confident she will
enjoy working with our students. Congratulations also
to Ms Penny Killen, who after working with us as a
temporary teacher for a long period of time has been
permanently appointed to Nowra High. Ms Killen is a
dedicated teacher and an outstanding year adviser, and
we are very lucky to have her as part of our school
team.
This is the final week of Term 1. Thank you to all of the

CONGRATULATIONS NOWRA HIGH SCHOOL YOU
Term 1 has been a particularly busy one for students and teachers. Ms. Barrott and the Year 12 Wellbeing
Team have been meeting fortnightly for breakfast, to plan activities and support student needs. They
organised a wonderful handball competition in Week 5 – Revive, where students and teachers battled
through heats, semis and finals, demonstrating their skills with the tennis ball. Jarvis Strand was crowned
the Handball Guru in an exciting display of superior ball skills. I’m looking forward to the Year 11 and 12
Trivia Night on Wednesday 1st April. Ms Barrott and Takunda will be MCing a fun series of trivia questions,
games and other amusing entertainment. It is only $10 per person with festivities getting underway at 7pm.
Be there, in fancy dress, with your own nibblies and soft drinks, at 6.30pm! It should be an absolute blast!
These activities are a wonderful way to bring students together as a group and improve school spirit.
In Week 8, at our whole school Wellbeing Assembly, we celebrated the National Day of Action against Bullying and
Violence. Takunda spoke eloquently about strategies to combat bullying and we listened to Unkle Adams’ hip hop
version of “I Am Stronger”, which encourages students to stand up and speak out against bullying. All students
sported their Bullying…No Way wristbands, pledging to be active bystanders. Jordan detailed the activities of the
Students Against Racism, Sexism and Homophobia group, who work to stop discrimination and celebrate diversity at
NHS. We were privileged to have Daniel Mowbray as our guest speaker. He told his personal story about overcoming
the stigma of his disability and reaching for the stars. His positivity, courage and resilience are amazing and the
audience were both moved and inspired, by this incredible young man. You can watch Daniel’s presentation again on
You Tube; just type in Daniel Mowbray. Sarah and Caitlin presented an informative talk on Peer Mediation and the
process involved. Congratulations to these skilled students who solve 90% of peer problems through this innovative
process. I’m always impressed with the students of NHS and the SRC; musicians and sound and lighting team all did
a wonderful job in contributing to an uplifting and very positive assembly.
Adolescence is always a challenging time for students and their parents. The Black Dog Institute has
developed three online courses designed to help educate both students and parents. Mindstrength is a
course for students aged 14-16, designed to teach resilience strategies including mindfulness meditation,
controlling emotions, identifying strengths and a step by step process for problem solving. Parents can
study two courses, Building Resilience in Young People and Navigating Teenage Depression. To access
these great resources, please go to www.BLACKDOGLMS.com. Learning about mental health first aide is an
important step in supporting our students. All wellbeing staff are trained at Nowra High School, so you can
be sure that your children are receiving excellent support.
Finally, the new merit system is working brilliantly, with over 90 students receiving an invitation to this week’s
Principal’s Morning Tea. Mr Murphy and I will be shopping up a treat, purchasing lots of delicious morsels for the
hungry children to enjoy. It is always a very enjoyable experience, seeing students rewarded for their excellent efforts
and helping them celebrate their success. It’s also fantastic to see so many senior students getting involved in the
merit scheme, with twelve Year 12 students being presented with their Platinum Awards at the recent Wellbeing
Assembly. They left the assembly with their platinum award badges sparkling in the sunlight, very proud of their
achievements.
At Nowra High we realise how important it is for students to be safe and happy at school, so each child can
achieve their full potential.
