Dear folks,
Easter is this Sunday! How good it will be to
celebrate the Risen Christ! In fact the whole season of Easter (April 5-May 17th) each Sunday a
celebration of God’s gift of salvation.
Because the Easter Season is the most important and joyous
occasion of the church year we will be celebrating communion
each week. I know some believe that weekly communion makes
the sacrament “less special”. This is only true if our participation is only about ourselves, what we remember and how you
feel.
When we partake of communion, we certainly remember what
Jesus did for us, but that is but a small part of the experience.
When we partake weekly we are celebrating what Christ does
for us now and what Christ will do in the future. Indeed this
meal is a foretaste of what the Kingdom of God in its fullness
will be like. Indeed Christmas and Easter seasons are feasts! So
it is appropriate that we feast each week during this season. I
hope each of you will participate in a spirit of expectation and
joy each Sunday.
Annual Conference June 19-21, 2015
“from Members to Disciples”
Va. Annual Conference will be held in Roanoke this
year. This means that it is time to collect items for our
Conference kits.
Baby Birthing Kits, Layette Kits and Health Kits are put together by
Lucinda Williams and her loyal group of ladies. New this year is a bedding
kit (more info on this later).
Lots of different items are needed for each kit and they must all be alike.
A list of the kit contents is located on the bulletin board across from the
church office. If you can’t go shopping, you may donate cash and someone
else will do the shopping for you. Prices for this year’s kits are as follows:
$50 bedding kit; $8 birthing kit; $55 cleaning kit; $12 health kit; $35 layette
kit; $11 school kit and $18 sewing kit.
Please see Lucinda Williams if you have any donations or questions.
Please make the celebration that much more full and rich by
participating with willing joy and love.
Sincerely
Pastor Tony

Group takes action to get new
members
Did you know that here at Aldersgate we have a
group of ladies who have been meeting for 20+
years for the sole purpose of making teddy bears and dolls?
The “Helping Hands” group was formed by Ena Reed as a mission
for the local children’s hospital. They cut out, sew and stuff teddy
bears and muslin dolls which are given to children who have surgery at Children’s Hospital of the Kings’ Daughters in Norfolk.
The group also donates 10 teddy bears to Heritage UMC for their
“Newborns in Need” Mission project each May. These bears go
to new babies, along with a complete handmade layette sets, who
otherwise would go home in just a shirt and diaper.
As the years have past their membership has dwindled. They decided they need to have a recruitment campaign to let the community know what they do and see if they could draw in new members.
The group has put together a tabletop display showing the teddy
bears and surgical dolls they donate to CHKD. It was first displayed at the Annual Winton Class Ham and Cabbage Dinner held
in March. The display will appear again as a manned display at
the “Lemons on the Lawn” Yard Sale and you can look for it at
other times. Information has been put into the area newsletters and
on the church sign out front and as a result an inquiry has been
made from another church about helping them to start a Helping
Hands Group of their own at their church. Recently they had 2
new members at their March meeting. They are really trying to
grow and seem to have a great start. If you would like more information see Carolyn Powers or Mary Ruth Forstall.
