You may have read about it in the local paper or heard people talking in town. Yes, Al-Van
Humane Society recently purchased the building that used to house Blue Star Glass. Why? Because
we are steadfast in our mission to compassionately serve the companion animals in our community
by providing the best shelter, adoptive homes, education, and resources available. We recognized
two years ago that physical space was the number one thing standing in our way of successfully
meeting our no kill commitment. The second thing standing in the way was resources. Raising the
funds needed to run our current shelter annually is no small feat. Finding additional resources to
fund this purchase, as well as the building renovations needed, compounded the challenge of
reaching our goal. However, the Board of Directors unwavering commitment to the lifesaving work
that takes place at the shelter fueled tremendous support, and on March 16 th Al-Van purchased the
building at 07591 Blue Star Highway, just 500 yards away from our current building.
So what’s the big picture? Our capital campaign sums it up. Al-Van C.A.R.E.S. (Community And
Resources Enhance Shelter) is about fulfilling our no-kill commitment by compassionately serving
all companion animals that come through our shelter doors. Increased space will allow us to
rehome more animals and serve more people every year. The new building will eventually serve as
our adoption center, providing an enriching shelter for adoptable animals and a positive adoption
environment for families looking to provide a forever home. A more enriching environment will
reduce stress to the animals so that they are healthier, happier, and more adoptable. That will allow
us to utilize our current shelter for providing the cleanest, safest intake and isolation area for
animals arriving at the shelter, allowing for immediate assessment and medical care. Separate
buildings for intake and isolation will help prevent disease and illness in the animals in our care.
The new building will also have space for community education such as the ongoing importance of
spaying and neutering all companion animals and the direct impact it has on reducing the number
of homeless animals. It will also provide a space where children and adults can learn humane care
of animals and gain skills to help them keep their pets in their homes.
The first phase of renovations will focus on relocating Rescued Treasures, our resale shop, to the
new building. Eliminating rent fees and increasing its square footage is critical in fulfilling our
mission in a fiscally responsible manner and securing sustainable revenue. Investing our financial
resources back into our own building puts funds right back to work for the animals.
How long will this transition take? That depends solely on the financial support of the Al-Van
community. We ask that you consider taking a step in investing in Al-Van’s no-kill mission. There
will be many opportunities to roll up your sleeves and pitch in with renovation projects. We will
have a long “wish list” of items needed in order to get the new building up and running. We also
have some wonderful naming opportunities for monetary donations given in memory of or honoring
a loved one or beloved pet. Together, we will make this dream come true. Together, we will move
forward saving more animals’ lives.
The Board of Directors would love to share our vision and enthusiasm and will be looking for
opportunities to talk personally with you in the upcoming months. In the meantime, feel free to
contact any one of us if you have any immediate questions. Al-Van CARES and we know YOU care,
too.
Donations can be made online at al-van.org via PayPal, credit card by phone, or check. Please note CARES campaign when making your donation.
May Is Dog Bite Prevention Month
Al-Van Humane Society staff and

million dogs living in US households,
millions of people, most of them
children, are bitten by dogs every year.
The majority of these bites, if not all,

The Value Of Volunteering
Al-Van Humane Society is in continuous need of volunteers. As the summer approaches, we
will begin to attend festivals and other events where we will bring our animals for Meet &
Greets. These events are held throughout Allegan and Van Buren counties, and we would love
to have volunteers from those areas to assist us.
Also, with the improved weather, there are now wonderful opportunities to take our dogs for
15- to 30-minute walks. Time outside of the shelter helps reduce kennel stress, helps promote
proper on-leash behavior, and keeps our dogs mentally and physically active. A tired dog is a
happy dog! Not to mention that walking benefits you as well as the dog!
If you are interested in helping our shelter, please contact Rebecca, our volunteer coordinator,
at volunteers@al-van.org or (269) 637-5062, to register for our next orientation. Not only are
there opportunities to work with the animals, but we always welcome people with skills in the

Thanks for Supporting our Winter Events
On Saturday, November 15, Al-Van Humane Society
hosted its annual Open House in conjunction with our
Cookie Caper. Special thanks to all our bakers and
Decadent Dogs, Visitors Bureau, Murphy’s Antique
Mall, Shores Style, Kerry Mark Salon, Admiral
Tobacco and our volunteers at Rescued Treasures and
the shelter who helped us sell our $5 plate of cookies.
Thank you to all the volunteers and donors that attended
our Open House. It is always heartwarming to receive
in-kind donations around the holidays.
As part of the 2015 Ice Breakers, Al-Van held a
Barking Bloody Mary's and Meowing Mimosas
fundraiser on Saturday, January 31st.. Thanks to Thirsty
Perch for hosting the event for us, and to all those who
came in from the cold to support us. The event raised
over $700.
We also held Meet & Greets at Wolverine Hardware,
Decadent Dogs and our own Rescued Treasures. Our
animals loved a day out in the community!
World Spay Day was held on Tuesday, February
24th. Al-Van took this opportunity to provide 15 cat
spay/neuter procedures thanks to the generous donation
of staff and surgical time from our partners at Phoenix
Road Animal Hospital and South Haven Animal
Hospital. Part of the cost was underwritten by a cat
spay/neuter grant from an anonymous donor through
the Raymond James Endowment Fund. Al-Van volunteers also spent time at South Haven Library sharing
important information about spaying and neutering pets
and had adoptable pets on hand for children to enjoy.
Al-Van Humane Society was thrilled to host the
annual Holiday Home Tour on December 7th. The
event raised over $3,000 in support of the shelter
animals. Special thanks to the Thalers, S. Newton, J.
Newton, Koths and Sheltons, five wonderful homeowners who opened their doors and welcomed the
public to come in and enjoy their holiday decorations.
Our resale shop, Rescued Treasures, served as a stop
for refreshments for those enjoying the tour.
Thanks to artist Joan Bonnette who provided each
homeowner a remarkable sketch of their home and to
all our volunteers and planning committee for putting
together a true holiday delight.
The 2015 Holiday Home Tour will be held Sunday,
December 6th. Tickets will be available starting
November 1. We will be providing updates on our
website, Facebook page, and our Fall newsletter.
Contact the shelter if you are interested in being a
featured home or would like to volunteer for this
event.

The staff, volunteers, and Board of Directors at Al-Van Humane Society would like to thank the following people for their tribute gifts and donations. Please let us know of any corrections as we appreciate and rely on your generosity to help us serve the needs of our local pets. We want to
give our sincere thanks to you all.
