BENOAK DEVONS
Just add water!!!!! Like most of the top half of Eastern Australia our area was
absolutely on its knees. The 2013/14 Drought was as solid as you could get. As I
write this Western NSW & Qld still haven’t had any decent rain, the area has gone
from bad to worse and our thoughts are with you all. Fortunately the season turned
around in our area in December, with 130mls for the month. Things have continued
to improve and we are heading into winter with a good amount of rough feed.
Probably the biggest positive is that livestock prices are the highest in history which is
some reward for carrying stock through this far. Let’s hope these prices are
sustainable for all involved.
On the Devon side of things they have once again served us well. I have included
some photos of during and after the drought. The way the cattle bounced back when
the season turned was astounding. The Devon cow’s ability to soldier on is amazing.
None of our cows had supplementary feeding except for Mega-min trace element lick
6 weeks prior to joining. And I’m happy to say across all cows with a nine week
joining (including two A.I. programmes) they achieved a 93% pregnancy rate. Not bad
considering the circumstances! Testament to our selection criteria focusing on low
maintenance, easy doing cattle as it is what I consider the Devon breed’s biggest
asset. 90% of our clients use Devon cross females as the base of their crossbreeding
operation. Their ability to adapt to the environment and remain fertile is renowned.
Our 2013 drop steers also had to struggle through getting minimal supplementary
feeding in the form of barley straw coming out of winter. They also bounced back well
with the first lot sent to Whyalla Feedlot in April for $2.75/kg. They averaged 437kg to
return $1200 each. The second lot is booked to go in June on the $3.00kg grid.
Amazing turn around and we are very grateful.
Introducing mega-min late September 2014

Calves weaned March 2015
2013 Drop Steers - Trials & Tribulations
Late September 2014, Barley straw twice a week for a month.
Early January 2015 with Alex & Bobby. Introduced to the Rape & Rye grass. Over 52 days they avg
1.19kg/day. The best weight gains were 1.5kg/day. The paddock produced 228kg/Ha over 52 days.
There were also steers on a pasture paddock, not stocked as heavy. They avg 1.43kg/day with the
best 1.85kg/day. An excellent recovery considering the circumstances.
Late March 2015 with Jess & Watagan on improved & native pasture.
Mid April 2015 to Whyalla Feedlot Avg 437kg X $2.75/kg To Avg $1200. All milk teeth.
Westley Family, Gum Flat, Via Inverell NSW
Thankyou to Richard & Abby Westley for inviting me over to see their calves. Sired by Sydney
Champion Benoak Fortune D50, who they purchased in 2010, out of Devon / Shorthorn cows.
These calves were as good as you see and an absolute credit to them. Richard informed me they
sold through the Inverell saleyards in May. They were from 9-11 months old, weaned for 2 months &
averaged 384kg empty, sold for $2.67/kg to return $1026 each!!!!! Apparently the word at the yards
was “to go & have a look at those red steers”. This was all done on their property they recently
purchased, it was unfertilised country with native grasses. The benefit of having easy doing cattle is
often under rated. Pictures mid march 2015.

Comments: High 'n' Mighty was UK young bull of the year in 2007. Paul & Loma saw the bull on the mini tour the UK Devon
society held in 2010. They commented that he was a big free moving bull with great thickness. His eldest progeny on
Oaklands have weaned their first calves & did a good job on them. If you’ve got the feed the steers grow into very big animals,
plenty of growth. The females are very deep, thick cattle but still show feminity with good mothering ability. Particularly
pleasing is their doing ability & ruby red coats.

Notes: From the time he was born he stood out. This bull ticks all the boxes & more, his Sydney scan data 728kg at19mths
with 116 EMA. His dam OF176 is a medium to large frame cow with plenty of type & length, she has always caught our eye
with her magnificent progeny so we decided to Generation A her & register D66. If ever there was a bull to hang our hat on
this is him. His progeny all have the ruby red coat with plenty of natural thickness, good temperament & are breeding on well.
This bull has always been one of my favourites.

side hock. He created plenty of interest prior to the injury & plenty since. We kept him on & as he recovered he filled out into a
real muscle machine, with the benefit of being poll. We used him tentatively for a season & consequently every year since!!!!
By the Gundooee poll bull out of the renowned Cinderella line he contributes to the poll side of our stud. (He appears to throw
a high poll rate.)

Notes: Emperor F49 A very correct kaiser son that I think a lot of. As an indication of his mobility & doing ability he’s been
used over 220 heifers & cows in three years with no calving issues & hardly loses any condition. Bulls like this are a good
reminder that if your working bulls are built properly & easy doing they can get over a lot of work with no breakdowns.
Interesting to note his sire Barnstaple Kaiser was exactly the same. He has two yearling bulls represented this year. Pictured

calf from the start. I remember when we branded him I could not get over the width & depth of him in the cradle. A quality bull
with an excellent temperamant. Used over 25 cows in our 2012 joining. Mitch Warden, Biloela, Qld purchased him at our 2013
Open Day/Sale & by all reports is pleased with his progeny & adaptability to date.
2015 SALE BULLS
This years “J” sale bulls were born, weaned and reared in drought until December
2014 and therefore don’t have the frame of other years. Feed was simply prioritised
to breeding cows. Nevertheless I am pleased how they are shaping up and they will
present well on the day. You will notice the 3 “K” yearling bulls have had a much
better start in life and are a good indication of how tough the “J” bulls did it.
This is the second year we have included yearling bulls in our Open day/ sale. We
have used them ourselves for over 10 years with great success. We recommend
using them over heifers or small to medium framed cows in their first year and then
giving them adequate nutrition to recover. It’s often commented that bulls used as
yearlings seem far more settled and are easy to handle throughout their working life.
It also lets you get another year out of your bulls which helps with the cost per calf.
Gerry & Carol Gehrig, Dungog NSW purchased a yearling bull last year. Gerry put
him over heifers the first year and then supplemented him with grain. Leonard J9 is
nearly two year old now and Gerry is happy with how he has grown out on his
country. I realise different country and management styles limit their use but if you’re
in a position to support them for the first year they are a good alternative.
