Number of preps enrolled for 2016: 7 A Word from Our Principal I would like to begin by wishing all our mums a relaxing and enjoyable day on Sunday. I’m sure you will enjoy the pampering and love that you truly deserve for all your work, love and care that you as mums provide daily and unconditionally. Our children have spent a great deal of time and care in their arts program producing you all very special gifts with the assistance of Mrs Peterson. I’m sure you’ll all have a great day feeling appreciated in the manner fitting of your enormous role as a mum! ‘Mothers hold the hands of their children for but a short time, but hold their hearts forever.’ NAPLAN Next week Grade 3 and 5 students will undertake the National Assessment Program Literacy and Numeracy tests. (NAPLAN) Students will sit 4 x 40 to 50 minute tests in Language Conventions, Writing, Reading and Numeracy over a 3 day period from May 12th to 14th. These tests along with formal assessments undertaken by classroom teachers assist us in measuring the progress of students and in planning for future curriculum. Schools are held very accountable for the results of these tests and all students are expected to complete them. Students who are absent on the day of testing may be required to make up for the missed test on their return. The results of the NAPLAN tests will be available in term 3. Bellarine Secondary College Chess Tournament We are aiming to determine how much interest there may be in children participating in a chess tournament hosted by BSC on Friday 15th May. It is a whole day event and would cost each child $20 to participate. We currently have 2 children who have enrolled. More details can be located at http://www.interschool.com.au/ If sufficient interest exists we may be able to coordinate a team. Practice sessions would be organised at school during lunch times. Lone Pine Our school was recently provided with our very own Lone Pine, which is a direct descendant of the original Lone Pine from Gallipoli. On August 6, 1915, the 1st Australian Infantry Division launched a major offensive at Plateau 400 at Gallipoli, Turkey. The ridges were once clothed with the Aleppo Pine (Pinus halepensis) however, they had been cut down to cover and line trenches, leaving one solitary pine. Hence it became known as Lone Pine Ridge. In the 3 days of fighting the A.N.Z.A.C.s lost 2000 men and the Turks losses were estimated at 7000. Lance Corporal Benjamin Charles Smith of the 3rd Battalion sent back several cones to his mother in Inverell N.S.W. Mrs McMullen sowed some of the seeds some 13 years later. Two seedlings were grown and one was presented to the town of Inverell. The Duke of Gloucester planted the second tree at the Australian War Memorial in Canberra. Yarralumla Nursery propagates these trees from seed collected from the tree at the Australian War Memorial. It is in this process that the BHPS tree has been produced. PREP Enrolments 2016 We are now taking enrolments for 2016. If you have a child who you wish to attend Barwon Heads Primary School in 2016, please collect and return the necessary enrolment forms. These are available at the school office. If you know of any other community member who may wish to enrol their child please feel free to inform them also. We have already had many enquiries from the nearby areas and are very conscious of the fact that our room availability and staffing will be significantly impacted by late enrolments. Mr Darren Roskosch Principal Free to a good home If anyone is interested in a rescued dog - a beautiful Kelpie named Harvey who didn’t quite cut it as a working sheepdog. Try to use containers or a nude food lunch box instead of taking glad wrap etc. Also there will be no bins out on Monday apart from the compost bins so the rubbish you bring to school you must take home with you. You can put fruit and vegetable scraps in the compost bins because these can break down into compost. Taking your rubbish home with you will prevent it blowing out of the bin. Imagine having a school without any rubbish! Special Religious Instruction SRI forms and information brochures were handed out to the eldest child in every family. All forms are due back now. If you wish for your child to attend Religious Education please make sure that you fill in the form and hand it back to school. There will be no charge for the program. Barwon Heads Cub Scouts Eli Jackson and Max Duval have both achieved The Grey Wolf Award, which is the highest honour for a Cub Scout and the requirements for this award present a significant challenge. To obtain the award, both boys had to plan and lead a two hour bushwalk for their fellow Cubs, attend a variety of outdoor weekend events and attend leadership meetings. Attainment of a number of achievement badges is also part of the award criteria as well as developing a resource for the pack to use into the future. They worked exceptionally hard to complete all the requirements and a celebratory ceremony was held at The Park indoor skate centre. Well done boys! Puppets after dark! BHPS students needed! BHPS Students are able to perform in the "Puppets After Dark" at Geelong After Dark tomorrow night, Friday 8th May. This annual arts event runs from 6-10pm in the Geelong CBD with over 60 pop-up arts performances. Large sized marine puppets were made at the school in March and have now been illuminated for this event. You can watch the Puppet Parade at 38-42 Malop Street at 6.45pm, 7.45pm & 8.45pm. Join us and be part of Geelong After Dark! Programs can be downloaded from geelongafterdark.com.au Easter Fair News Our committee is very excited to work towards holding the Easter Fair in 2016. We will announce a meeting time, early in term 4, so that anyone who wants to get involved can come along. We are always happy to hear new ideas and feedback. Please contact me at wjackson2@bigpond.com to let me know if you’d like to become involved or would like to share ideas. Sarah Jackson After School Care Hi Everyone! This week at OSHC the children have been busy with creating, designing, colouring and painting. We are mostly working on our mother’s day surprises which we have discussed can also be for other important females in our lives such as aunties or grandparents. We also had a group painting on the go which turned out really well. Soon to come to OSHC at Barwon Heads Primary will be 'theme' weeks. Keep your eyes peeled for more information to come as the students and I are getting some theme ideas and activities together. Also don't forget for these theme weeks – the more you get involved the better the fun and games – and there will be prizes to win too! We have also introduced some 'buddy bear' leders for every day at after school care – Keep a close eye for more information. We are currently finding out who wants to be a leader – I have requested that those students who go to after school care and desire to be leaders write a letter to me to explain why they would be a good buddy. There have been a couple of applications and all is going smoothly. Families please note that whislt we currently only provide after school care we are taking expressions of interest for BEFORE SCHOOL CARE, we have a bit of interest but we need a couple more families to get involved so that we have the numbers to provide the before school care service. Please let us know if you are interested to ensure we can try and provide this service as soon as possible. You can let us know by calling the OSHC phone (number is provided below) or calling into the office/room which is located near the gym, we are here Monday to Friday 2:30pm to 6:00pm. We would love to hear from you :) Any questions please call us on 0432 636 625. Suzanne Barwon Heads Primary School promotes integrity, life-long learning and the attainment of excellence.
