Fact Box Burkina Faso
BØRNEfonden Burkina Faso was established in 1996 and in
2014 we worked in the south-eastern parts of the country. We
work in five provinces and operate a total of 29 development
and follow up units in poor rural areas. We support over
11.000 children in Burkina Faso.
• Population: 18,365,123 (July 2014 Est.)
• Capital: Ouagadougou.
• Language: French (official) and native African languages
belonging to Sudanic family spoken by 90% of the population.
• Life expectancy at birth: 54.78 years.
• Infant mortality rate: 76.8 deaths/1,000 live births (2014 Est).
How BØRNEfonden Works
Our work is shaped by the different needs children have
growing up. BØRNEfonden works in a community for a period
of 15-20 years, after which all facilities are handed over to the
local authorities and citizens of the local community.
In each of the five countries where BØRNEfonden works
(Burkina Faso, Togo, Benin, Mali and Cape Verde) there are
about 25 development units. Each development unit employs
around four staff members, and the unit is run by an unpaid
committee of 10-12 members, who are all democratically
elected by the local community.

Overall Achievements and Results in 2014
A customized action plan initiated has continued to offer alternatives to
young children at risk of leaving formal education, and this action has
begun to produce results as shown by our statistics, notably the
decrease in the number of children leaving BØRNEfondens programs.
On another note, a total of 13 projects were designed and submitted to
our office in Copenhagen, among which a total of 10 projects were
financed.

Education
Helping more children to go to school is a core activity for BØRNEfonden, and in 2014 improving access to
education has been a focal point in our work. 21 classrooms in primary school and 8 preschools have been
built, which has contributed to an increase in school enrollment rate. In the past year, 8.702 pupils in
primary and secondary school have been supported with tuition fee and school supplies. 84 young adults
are improving their skills in 2-3 year-long training courses in vocational training centers on sewing, welding,
carpentry, masonry and mechanical workshops. Furthermore, 1.808 teachers have been trained, and the
support of 4.500 giant slates, 1.500 French books and 1.500 math books have improved school life and
the learning environment for many children.
Children & Development

In 2014, special attention has been paid to ensuring children’s right to
an identity and to protect children from violence. Continuing the
momentum engaged in 2013, advocacy actions for the protection of
children against violence were carried out particularly in partnership
with other NGOs. As part of the advocacy campaign initiated by
ChildFund Alliance, our program took part in the collection of
signatures for a petition in July 2014. A total of 1.065 signatures were
collected by the staff of BØRNEfonden.
Health
BØRNEfonden’s health effort is focused both on curative and preventive aspects. A total of 5.563 children
and their families received reimbursements of their medical fees during the past year. The most frequent
diseases whose treatment was paid for are malaria, parasitic infections, respiratory infections, malnutrition
and diarrhea. The efforts contribute to reducing child morbidity and mortality. As a special issue
BØRNEfonden was committed along with health authorities to implement the national response plan against
the Ebola disease. In addition, BØRNEfonden contributed to improve access to water in 6 municipalities
with the construction of 18 boreholes to the benefit of 5.400 people.
Income Generating Activities
To promote food security in local communities in 2014, 7 hectares of
rice growing lowlands were developed for a total production of 35 tons
of rice to the benefit of 150 households. Also, an 8-hectare market
garden site connected with 24 market garden wells was made for the
benefit of 110 farmers. Finally, to help young people to create their
own income and establish a basis for their lives, 667 young people
have been supported to take part in projects in several production
fields.
