Highlights from the Council Meeting in Denver
From Dan Rabinovich:
1. Candidates were chosen for major society offices, including two candidates for 2016 ACS President-Elect:
G. Bryan Balazs, Associate Program Leader at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, and Allison A.
Campbell, Associate Laboratory Director, Pacific Northwest National Laboratory.
2. The Council voted to approve a $4.00 increase in ACS annual dues to $162 for 2016.
3. The Society Committee on Education (SOCED) reported that more than 1,900 individuals have joined the
American Association of Chemistry Teachers (AACT), which was launched last year. 88% of members teach
chemistry at the K-12 level.
4. The Committee on Meetings and Expositions (M&E) recommended that the early registration fee for
members attending 2016 national meetings be set at $415. The Council requested that the Board of Directors delays the implementation of the new registration fee until a break-even analysis, including and excluding
the net revenue from the Exposition, is presented, preferably at the upcoming Boston national meeting.
5. M&E also reported that official attendance at the 248th National Meeting in San Francisco, CA, was
15,774, while the Exposition had 439 booths with 290 exhibiting companies. For the Denver ACS meeting,
the total attendance as of Tuesday evening, March 24th, was 13,940.
6. As part of the continuing ACS sustainability effort and to encourage the use of the ACS mobile app and
online program, M&E decided to discontinue free distribution of the hard copy program book starting in
2016. Attendees who pre-register for the meeting will be able to purchase a copy of the program book for
$10 (pick up on site), and copies will be available at the meeting for $20. The (free) PDF version of the national meeting program will be more prominently displayed on the ACS website for those who would like to
print portions for themselves.
7. The Council approved the establishment of ACS International Chemical Sciences Chapters in India and
Taiwan. The International Activities Committee (IAC) reviewed and approved new chapter applications initiated by members in Brazil, Nigeria, Peru, and the United Arab Emirates.
8. The Committee on Budget & Finance reported on the society’s 2014 financial performance. Revenues
totaled $499.0 million, and net contribution from operations reached $17.9 million, $0.7 million higher than
had been budgeted. Expenses were 481.1 million, $3.5 million favorable to the budget. The variance was
largely attributable to a continued emphasis on expense management across the Society.
The full report will be available shortly at the section's web site (http://carolinapiedmont.sites.acs.org).
