C ATHOLIC P ORTSMOUTH Catholic Parishes and Schools in Partnership in the City of Portsmouth 14 JUNE 2015 - 11TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME (Year B) The Kingdom of God This weekend our focus is on the Kingdom of God. So what is meant by that? You may be a little frustrated because you feel that Jesus has not explained clearly enough what he means when he says, “the kingdom of God is like...” and we are not told what he said to his disciples. Jesus is not teasing, but he does want his disciples to be able to teach once he is not with them, and this they do. Think of all we have heard about their teaching in the Acts of the Apostles. The Kingdom is not a place or region but is the ʻReign of Godʼ. It is the power of Godʼs love and we can only really become conscious of Godʼs love once we enter into a relationship with him. We actually have to make a decision that we consciously want to say ʻyesʼ to Godʼs unending invitation to know him and love him. By saying ʻyesʼ we put ourselves into Godʼs hands, into his loving power, which constantly encourages and enables us to grow. We can only enter into any relationship by talking to someone and so it is with God. When we talk to Him we talk as unique individuals, but Pope Francis encourages us “to listen to the Word of God. This means rediscovering the value of silence in order to meditate on the Word that comes to us.” Like a seed growing it may take time for green shoots to come but you may be astonished when they do! The story of the mustard seed should encourage us. Could Peter or Paul have imagined that there would be more than a billion Christians world-wide by 2015? The early church suffered from appalling persecution just as in many countries today Christians are being savagely attacked. Is Jesus challenging us (as we ponder on this gospel) to do something in our small patch of land, to make some small seeds grow? We cannot solve all the problems of the world, but we can try to make a difference in our own backyard. The Church is a sign of the Kingdom and as Pope Francis states in his recent Papal Bull “wherever the Church is present, the mercy of the Father must be evident”. Cathedral Parish News GOODBYE TO ANSEL D’MELLO Today we bid a fond farewell to Ansel who has been with us since last September on placement from his seminary. What a lot he has done! He has contributed to the life of our local Catholic schools, helped prepare our First Communicants, preached at Mass, visited the sick and housebound, worked in the Discovery Centre, been an active member of the Guild of St John and generally endeared himself to many. After today’s 1000 Mass we will make a presentation to him in the Hall. Please join us and keep him in your prayers as he continues his formation for diocesan priesthood. FIRST HOLY COMMUNION Next Sunday (and not today as we said in last week’s newsletter!) fifty-five children from our parish will make their First Holy Communion. They will do so in groups at each of our Sunday Masses accompanied no doubt by their families from hear and far. The children and their families will be sitting in reserved seats – which means some of you won’t be able to sit in your usual place! Please pray for the children as they count down the days to what is for every Catholic a very special day PASTORAL LETTER Bishop Philip has written a pastoral letter on the Church’s social teaching. It will replace the homily at all Masses this Sunday and is also available in printed form; on our diocesan website you can see and hear him deliver it. THE GUILD OF ST MARTHA Ushers and Welcomers play an important role in Sunday Mass. They welcome, hand out newsletters and hymn books, and assist where needed. Those who’d like to start this ministry are invited to join this new Guild of St Martha – she whom Jesus noted was busy providing hospitality. It will meet for a first time this Saturday (20 June) at 1100 and thereafter once a month. Please see Sister Maura if you are interested in joining. MINISTRY ROTAS Rotas for July-Sept will be available in the 2nd week in June. Please contact Sister Maura if you are unavailable on any of these Sundays. Her contact details are on page 1. CATHEDRAL CAR PARK Please do not leave valuables in your car whilst at Mass. Thieves are about! DISCOVERY CENTRE & CAFE Open every day except Monday selling religious cards and devotional items. Bishop Crispian’s Golden Jubilee Thanks to everyone who helped make last Tuesday’s Mass to celebrate Bishop Crispian’s Golden Jubilee so memorable. He enjoyed being back and we enjoyed seeing him. Photos of the day are viewable on the diocesan website. DAY TRIP TO THE NEW FOREST Come and join the Afternoon Social Group on Tuesday 14 July for a day trip to the New Forest. We leave St John’s at 1015 to arrive for lunch at Lyndhurst followed by free time there. Benediction at St Dominic’s Priory and cream tea in Beaulieu. Cost £20.00 Contact Mary Harkin 023 9261 0214 or the Parish Office 023 9282 6170. BEREAVEMENT GROUP We’re looking to broaden the membership and support of our monthly bereavement group. CATHEDRAL CLERGY As announced last week the Bishop has appointed John Paul Lyttle as an additional assistant priest to the Cathedral parish. He will be ordained at the Cathedral at 1800 on Friday 3 July and will begin his ministry with us in late August. Please pray for him.
