OCTOBER 2014 – TWENTY-EIGHTH SUNDAY OF ORDINARY TIME YEAR A
The Banquet of Life
At this point in the season of Ordinary Time, the message of the
Gospel points to the end times. As summer comes to an end and
autumn begins, the natural environment around us reflects this idea
of ‘dying.’
Death creeps into our lives almost secretly. We lose members of our
families and close friends. We age and we experience the gradual
loss of our abilities. For those who believe in Christ, death is but a
passageway to eternity. The funeral rites of the Church help us to
ritualise our belief even as we mourn our loss.
Isaiah, in the first reading, offers images of God’s providence that fit the hope of Christians. He
imagines a new Jerusalem, settled on God’s holy mountain. In his vision, God provides a rich
banquet – not just minimal food for the hungry, not just basic sustenance, but a rich banquet
in which God’s people taste delight. Isaiah imagines death as a veil that covers everyone, a
web woven over all the nations. But in this vision that veil is fragile; subject to destruction by
God’s deliberate might.
In the gospel, we hear the parable of the king who gave a wedding banquet. The parable is
striking: a king prepares a lavish banquet, yet those who were invited do not bother to attend.
In response, the king declares the invited unfit and opens the doors of the banquet hall to
anyone who wishes to come.
For Christians, the contrast between death and life in Christ is the contrast between hunger
and the banquet. Whenever the sadness of death threatens to overtake the people we love
or our very lives, our belief in Christ brings all the comfort of rich food and drink.

EVENING WITH MEG “I LEFT EVERYTHING
AND FOLLOWED HIM”
Meg Hunter-Kilmer is a young American
woman who, a few years ago, felt God
call her to give up everything, leave her
job, and travel from place to place
speaking about Christ, and how to be a
follower of him. Meg is in England at the
moment, and we are thrilled that she will
be speaking at St Swithun’s Church,
Southsea, this Thursday 16 Oct at 1900.
The evening will be similar to the evening
we held with Jeff Cavins at the Cathedral
last year – it will begin with music,
followed by Meg’s talk, where she will
share her story. There will then be a time
of Adoration, beautiful music and led
prayer in front of the Blessed Sacrament.
This is a great opportunity to hear about
someone who left everything to follow
Jesus. Completely free!
All
welcome.
Please
contact
hannah@portsmouthcatholiccathedral.or
