Joseph Moreno is Professor Emeritus of Music Therapy at Maryville University and Director of the Moreno Institute for the Creative Arts Therapies in Santa Fe, New Mexico, USA. He has long maintained an interdisciplinary approach to his work and is internationally recognized for his creative work in bringing together the disciplines of music therapy and psychodrama. For further information his website can be viewed at www.morenoinnermusic.com WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION Participants in this workshop will have the opportunity to be involved in experiential work on issues that evolve out of the group processes in the areas of music and imagery, music and psychodrama, music and art therapy, music and dance therapy, music improvisation techniques and more. These rich processes are powerful tools in music psychotherapy, and the emphasis will be that of learning through action in ways that will enable the participants to apply what is learned in clinical practice as well as in their personal lives. Part One: Music and Imagery WORKSHOP – DAY TWO Music Therapy and Psychodrama, Analytic Music Therapy: Music Improvisation as a Projective Technique in Individual and Group Psychotherapy. Music Therapy with Developmentally Disabled Children: Clinically Adapted Musical Instruments. The Mystery of the Musical Savant Syndrome. Part Two: Music Therapy and Psychodrama WORKSHOP – DAY THREE Practice in Creating and Leading a Group Experience in Music and Imagery. Music and Pain Management: Music-Mediated Imagery Advanced Techniques in Clinical Music Therapy Improvisation. Multicultural Music Therapy: Music Therapy and the Blues and Jazz Improvisation Techniques and Music Therapy and the Music of India. Music Therapy at End of Life. Part Three: Music and Dance Therapy LEARNING OBJECTIVES 1. Gain a broad understanding of the discipline of music therapy from both theoretical and practical perspectives, and as applied to all relevant clinical populations. 2. Learn through experience how to work with music imagery in both a group format, as well as in the one-to-one therapist and client setting. 3. Gain an understanding of the sources of all of the creative arts therapies, music, art, dance and drama, from historical and cultural perspectives. From pre-historic roots to the connections to living traditions of healing through the arts, examples will be presented from many countries and cultures and supported by music, powerpoint and dvd. 4. Experience the psychodramatic process, including basic techniques such as warm up, role reversal, doubling, mirroring and modeling, as well as the ways in which improvised music can enhance the psychodramatic process. 5. Learn how expression through music improvisation can be an effective means of connecting to a person’s inner world and open the door to continuing therapeutic interventions. 6. Learn how effective music can be in helping developmentally disabled children to learn non-musical skills in areas such as language, motor skills, numerical concepts, color discrimination, social learning and more. 7. Learn how music and art therapy can be integrated to reach non-verbal clients, as well as more general applications that can lead to opening pathways for continuing therapeutic interventions. 8. Learn how music and movement can also be an effective combination for expression and provide openings for continuing therapy processes. 9. Experience the excitement, fun and therapeutic values of working with the musical form of the blues, a joyful and cathartic form of musical expression. 10. Learn about the savant syndrome, individuals with severe mental retardation who exhibit one area of exceptional ability, as in music and art and mathematical skills. The achievement of three of the most well-known musical savants in history will be presented. 11. Learn how the music improvisation based technique of Music Mediated Imagery can be an effective tool in pain management. 12. Learn about and experience work in music improvisation techniques designed to establish connections between music therapists and clients. WORDS FROM PARTICIPANT Being the protagonist in one of the therapist's demonstrations, I experienced the therapeutic power of psychodrama, and expressed my internal conflicts and energy. After the workshop, I did not only learn the theories about psychodrama, I felt I have made a good step forward. I was glad that the group members also benefited from witnessing my process.
