Check the W T of the C-17 and was lead engineer on the autoflight system. He also worked on the navigation system of the Delta 4 launch vehicle. [Columnist note: I may have bumped into Fred in the halls at C-17 and Delta, but we didn’t know each other then.] Here are Fred’s views about his life with bridge: “I started playing bridge when I was 16 and played at work when I could find a game. It was on a cruise to New Zealand and Australia that my experience with the game changed. It was on the second day of the cruise when I read in the daily bulletin about a bridge lecture scheduled for 10:00 a.m. I actually wondered whether this was about the game or the bridge of the ship. I attended the lecture and returned for the 3:00 p.m. game. I was assigned a partner with whom I played the duration of the cruise. When we docked in Sydney, the final port, my partner suggested that I find a club locally where I lived. I followed his advice and have been playing duplicate for 13 years. I am now a Silver Life Master. “I have played in clubs in all of the local units and in many tournaments. One of my most interesting experiences was when I played in an Omaha Regional and went up to shake hands with Warren Buffet. He was wearing his gecko shirt reflecting his ownership interest in Geico. Years later I ran into him again at the Las Vegas Summer NABC and he was wearing the same shirt. The partners I play with the most are Bill Hall, Shirl Thomas, Fred Benedetti, Dale Rensing, Jody Pedri, Shmuel Fisher, Ted Doria and Tae Lee.” Thank you Fred, for sharing your brief bio with us. A call for editorial input: looking back at some of my earlier columns, circa 2008 and 2009, I notice that unit members used to provide me with news of their victories in bridge, new grandchildren, vacations and cruises, etc. Nowadays, the news volunteered by members seems to have dried up except for a few isolated cases. Come on, readers, let me know what is going on with you. I am all ears (or eyes) if you bulletin board for other May activities. Oops! It was Mr. Spock who told us to ...”Live long and prosper.” Dr. Spock told us how to raise our kids! Here’s wishing all the Moms a very Happy Mother’s Day! Fred was born and raised in Anaheim and attended Katella High School. He attended the California Institute of Technology, graduating with honors in 1977, majoring in Applied Mathematics. “My undergraduate tenure at Caltech was one of the most profound experiences of my life. I lived at Page House, one of seven undergraduate on-campus residences. We invited to dinner and had personal interaction with several prominent personalities of the day, including Richard Feynman and Linus Pauling (Nobel Laureates), Robert Heinlein (science fiction) and Carl Sagan.” Fred then attended graduate school at UCLA earning his PhD in mathematics in 1981. At the same time he was working for Hughes Aircraft and was a fortunate participant in the company’s doctoral fellowship program. He spent approximately 30 years in the aerospace industry working at Hughes, Ford Aerospace, and McDonnell Douglas (later becoming Boeing).
