Personally Speaking
Music Appreciation Sunday
by Dr. Jonathan Talberg, Director of Music
Music Appreciation Sunday is coming up on May 17. This is the last Sunday of the musical year at First Church
with the full choir and on this day it’s tradition for the congregation to say “thank you” to the choir. But at First Church, our
members show their gratitude for the music every Sunday.
This year, the Cathedral Choir will say “thank you” to the congregation by singing John Rutter’s evocative Gloria as part of
our worship service. The choir will be joined by the Southern California Brass Consortium, one of the area’s finest brass groups.
Written for choir, organ, trumpet, trombone, french horn, tuba and percussion, this piece is one of Rutter’s most loved because
of its varied textures, tempi and colors. And, it takes full advantage of The Great Organs.
What we do every Sunday is a real team effort. I am grateful for the constant support of the congregation, our ministers and
all the church staff. The choir works extremely hard every Sunday morning in rehearsals and in service to bring our music alive.
Our outstanding musicians, both volunteer and professional, are up for anything—from Gregorian Chant to African Circle
Songs. We do it because we love singing for First Church. We look forward to seeing you on May 17.
Book Talk:
Dreams and Resurrection by Jack Call
TODAY – 12:30pm – Barnum Room
If you have ever been haunted by the thought of being sucked away into nothingness, you should read
Dreams and Resurrection by church member Jack Call. Perhaps everything that can be said about the
probability of an afterlife has already been said, but that doesn’t matter. What matters is whether you
remember the reasons why personal, subjective immortality make sense and eternal death doesn’t.
Join us for a compelling discussion at our book talk after today’s worship service.

Come From Far and Wide
Andrew and Birge Amondson and their youngsters

church here on a Sunday

are members of our church
who live in Berlin—yes, the
Berlin in Germany—part of
the year. When they are in
Los Angeles, they make it a
point to be in attendance at
our worship service. First Church is grateful to have so many
dedicated members in our congregation.
