Personally Speaking
A Conversation of Faith
by Dr. R. Scott Colglazier, Senior Minister
I’m so looking forward to our final Conversation of Faith on May 3, when we welcome Rabbi Bradley
Artson to our church. Together we will explore what I think is the central question in all of religion, and for that matter,
in all of life: Why do we suffer? Why do bad things happen? How do we understand suffering, while at the same time
maintaining belief in a good and loving God?
Christians answer these questions in a variety of ways. There isn’t one right way or wrong way to think about this theological
puzzle. Jewish theologians also struggle with these questions. Rabbi Artson is one of the country’s leading theologians and he
has focused his scholarly career on this topic. I think we’re going to have a great day of exploration.
Bring your friends. Tell others about the day. May 3 is going to be a special Sunday at First Church!
Beyond Violence: A Presentation by Dr. Gwynne Guibord
Today at 12:30pm – Shatto Chapel
We are seized with the urgency of escalating crises that have filled our societies with fear and normalized
violence, provoking short sighted and ineffective responses. “The most serious and unaddressed worldwide
challenge is the deprivation and abuse of women and girls, largely caused by a false interpretation of carefully
selected religious texts and a growing toleration of violence and warfare,” President Jimmy Carter has stated.
In February, more than 70 leaders from human rights, women’s rights and religious communities gathered
at The Carter Center in Atlanta for the Annual Human Rights Defenders Forum, “Beyond Violence: Women
Leading for Peaceful Societies.” On the last day of the Forum, Dr. Guibord was invited to place a scarf around
President Carter with the words “I am a beloved child of the Holy...always” imprinted on it. She then offered
the President a Blessing. To hear more about this historic gathering, we welcome you to attend a talk given by
Rev. Dr. Gwynne Guibord in Shatto Chapel after today’s service.
Book Talk:
Dreams and Resurrection by Jack Call
Sunday, May 3 – 12:30pm – Barnum Room
If you have ever been haunted by the thought of being sucked away into nothingness, you should read
Dreams and Resurrection by church member Jack Call. Perhaps everything that can be said about the
probability of an afterlife has already been said, but that doesn’t matter. What matters is whether you
remember the reasons why personal, subjective immortality make sense and eternal death doesn’t.
Join us for a compelling discussion at our book talk after worship service on May 3.

Renee Firestone Shares in Our
Holocaust Remembrance Service
Holocaust survivor Renee Firestone
shared with us her
very personal story of
her experience in the
extermination camp
at Auschwitz, Poland.
Her words imparted
a vivid portrait of the
horrific events she lived
through and how they left an indelible mark on her life.
Being in the presence of Ms. Firestone was an extremely
impactful experience.
