GOLEEN & DISTRICT COMMUNITY COUNCIL NEWSLETTER
SERVING THE MIZEN PENINSULA
VOL: 8 WEEK 17 APR 23 2015 Published every Thursday.
The growing crisis of illegal
dumping was at the top of the agenda at the Council meeting on Monday last and
Amenity Sites loss of opening days to the local community was discussed at great
length. Customers of the Amenity sites are now queuing up to an hour in the short
times the sites are opened and it was acknowledged by management that at any
Amenity site there could be up to 15 customers per hour. In the two sites in
question, both Derryconnell and Castletownbere, there are far more than just 15
per hour, as a matter of fact it was pointed out Monday at one of these sites there
were 97 customers in 4 hours last weekend, which was an average of 24
customers per hour. Even with these true facts in front of them the only answer
they had on Monday to this was ‘We do not have those figures at hand’. The real
fact is that a mistake was made, as was pointed out at the beginning of this
ridiculous move, on February 9th. There was no consultation to help prepare
people for this and, listening to what was said on Monday, no matter who is
inconvenienced there will be no change, whether it is an hour or two hours you will
queue, it’s simply tough luck. As we have seen in decision after decision, year
after year, if you live in rural Ireland you will have to suffer even if true facts stare
people in the face. As this is a real health and safety issue, which was also pointed
out on Monday, we would advise people, who correctly use the Amenity sites, to
be careful of other vehicles and people around you as packed amenity sites of
people rushing, who have been held up huge lengths of time, could lead to serious
accident. As the summer time is upon us, it’s difficult to see how far more this will
be allowed to continue before someone will wake up and put people first for once
and for all. The one positive bit of news in all this is the workers in the Amenity
sites, who give an efficient and great service to the public, and we would like to
thank them for their excellent work down through the years. Clonakilty is also up in
arms for the closure of their Amenity site on Mondays which, like ourselves, has
led to major inconvenience to people who use this site also.

BARLEY COVE Beach Hotel

We are open this week
from Thursday 23rd to Sunday 26th April.
Warm weather brings the exotic Hoopoe with it - The recent warm weather
has resulted in a beautiful continental bird being sighted throughout West Cork.
The hoopoe bird, which normally migrates to the continent this time of year, has been
spotted and photographed in several locations this week along the south coast, but
especially on the stretch west from Timoleague.
The birds have very distinctive plumage, comprising a zebra-type black and white wing,
over a rusty orange chest, and a similarly stripey colouring on the tip of their head crest,
making them look quite exotic among native Irish birds. They are named after the
distinctive sound they make while calling. The bird would normally make its home in
France or Spain at this time of year, but this year’s unusually high pressure for April,
combined with a strong northerly wind, may have meant the birds were blown too far north.
‘They would normally be found in North Africa or on continental Europe,’ Nicholas
explained, ‘and they head further north in spring to breeding grounds, but the recent warm
weather means many ‘overshot’ their destinations last week, and ended up migrating to the
southern Irish coast’.
‘Every year we have sightings of up to about 12 of these birds, but this year we are looking
at about 50 birds,’ he said. He added that the last time this happened was in 1965, when
about 65 hoopoes were found here. The birds are about the size of a blackbird, with a
much wider wing span.
‘They like sandy, dusty surfaces, with short grass, so they can feed on invertebrates in the
ground,’ explained Nicholas, who photographed one on short grass alongside a driveway.
‘Some may spend the summer here but, if they do, they will certainly fly south in the
autumn to spend the winter in Africa,’ he said. Sioban Cronin

Table Tennis News - The table tennis club always receives amazing amount of local
interest and support and I know the players are ever appreciative of it. Once again they did
us proud and this time at the most important National event of the year, the Interprovincial
Championships. To represent Munster is a great honour and 4 of our players achieved that
goal this season. Mair Kelly has had her fair share of victories this season but even she
surpassed any previous tournament, winning 7 out of 8 of her matches against the top
players in the country. Unsurprisingly with that record the Munster U18 Girls took Gold.
Erik Olsson took his place on the Munster team for the first time and helped the U13s take
a well earned Silver medal. Amy Dorrington, who travels from Drimoleague to train in
Goleen, also claimed Silver in the U15 event, while Jasmine Kelly debuted in the U13 Girls.
A terrific performance from all the players and a great day!
Event this Sunday - The West Cork Table Tennis Rankings for April will take place in
Goleen this Sunday at 11am. Everyone is welcome and all standards are catered for. Erik
Olsson will be going for his third win in the Premier Division this season. Owen Kelly
