POSITIVE NEWS FOR BEEF FARMERS
There was some very positive news this week with the announcement that
Ireland will be the first European country to be allowed sell beef in the US market
in 16 years. Beef from the EU has been banned from the US since it imposed a
ban over concerns about the infectious bovine disease BSE. The ban was only
formally lifted in March 2014. The news is the result of two years of rigorous
testing and negotiations. Minister Simon Coveney welcomed the news. "We
have worked with the US administration to get an inspection team here to look at
our plans, to look at our systems, to reassure them on safety grounds,” he said.
"A positive relationship has developed and now that has resulted in a big
breakthrough, which is a full opening of the US beef market to Irish beef.
America is a country that consumes 11 million tonnes of beef every year. They
import about 1.2 million tonnes of that. That’s about €4 billion worth of beef. The
US at the moment is the highest priced beef market in the world. It is important
that Ireland will be part of that. It’s really important that we have as many
markets as possible to access so that we can target the markets that give us the
best price. The more high quality premium priced beef we are selling into the
highest price markets in the world, the higher the margin which farmers will
receive.”
This is a positive development and its significance will be judged by farmers
securing improved beef prices from the market place in 2015. There has been a
recent major increase in US beef prices, up by €1/kg in the past year, represents
a “real opportunity” for Irish grass-based beef exports. So a good start for the
New Year has to be welcomed by all.
MARY LUCEY RIP
The death has taken place in Schull Community Hospital of Mary Lucey,
Rathura, Schull. Mary was a former member of Goleen & District Community
Council, serving her area for four years. Mary was well known due to her
involvement in many organisations in both Goleen and Schull down through the
years. Her passing leaves many memories for those who knew her. The
Ballydehob, Goleen and Schull ICA group formed a guard of honour for Mary
outside the Church of the Seven Sacraments, Lowertown last Saturday. She will
be missed by her relatives and friends. MC GDCC

Goleen ICA wishes everybody a very Happy and Peaceful New Year. Our first meeting of
2015 will be on Wednesday 14th January in the Parish Hall. The 9.30 pm talk, entitled,
“Her Trip to the Philippines”, will be given by Heather O’Leary. The title perhaps belies the
actual nature of the “Trip”. We are not looking at and hearing about Heather’s summer
vacation but rather learning about the charitable work she has been carrying out with
underprivileged children in that region. I would urge you to come along to take interest in
and to support one of the young members of this community who has given up her time
and skills to assist some of the world’s more disadvantaged children. As usual a
scrumptious array of home baking will be provided along with tea, coffee and a raffle. (All
for €5 for non-members) Mary O’Meara PRO
