VOL: 7 WEEK 45 NOV 06 2014 Published every Thursday.
COMMUNITY ALERT The security of everyone in their homes and their property is of huge importance to
all of us and following a meeting of Community Alert groups in Bandon tonight it was encouraging to hear
that in West Cork most crimes are down. In towns like Bantry crime has dramatically reduced and this is
mainly due to the introduction of CCTV, which is a must in most towns today. This acts as a great
deterrent and many housing estates in Bantry are actively seeking CCTV in place now to fight any crime.
We also have the new TEXT Alert, which is up and running in Ballydehob and Goleen. This acts as a real
deterrent; in a recent attempted burglary in Drinagh the text alert was sent out and this vehicle was seen
later in Glandore and a couple of hours later was attempting to carry out a Burglary in the other side of
Cork. The main topic for discussion in Bandon tonight was the need for a Garda in Durrus, Kealkill and a
Sergeant in Schull. Due to recent retirements, while cover is been provided in these places, it was made
very clear from the floor by Community Alert representatives that nothing less than full time replacement
will be considered good enough, The whole of the Sheep’s Head Peninsula without a full time guard is
unimaginable and the same for Kealkill and immediate replacement was urged strongly as was for the
Sergeant’s position in Schull. The sense of urgency was clearly visible at this meeting to have these
positions filled and it was encouraging to hear that Gardai have sought the positions. So we hope it will
only be a matter of time before the positions are filled. Drugs were discussed with an increase by 28% of
people caught in possession and the real fear of the drug Heroin getting into West Cork on a big scale.
This is a lethal drug and all must be done to make sure it does not creep its way into West Cork as it
simply destroys those who take it and those around them. The Muintir na Tire representative spoke of
changes in the recent budget that will affect aid call companies and it could be bad news for all who have
these aid calls. He can’t believe for the life of him why they have tried to tamper with how these aid calls
are distributed and all must be done to stop the Department on this one, he said.
PHONE SCAMS At the moment people are getting phone scam calls and texts trying out any way they
can cod people out of their money. Some claim they are from Revenue more call and start calling out 4
digits of a credit card and ask you to read out the rest of the numbers on your card. These are all scams
that people are carrying out. Post codes will be here in the next few months and this may help with
Emergency services getting to homes quicker, we were led to believe tonight. And for all those interested
in the Garda crime file it will be on C103 FM every Thursday at 11.45 am. Judging will take place for the
Garda Youth Awards on Monday night next and nominations have been received from the Mizen
Peninsula.
GREAT FUNDRAISING EFFORTS CONTINUE There is no doubting the generosity of the people of the
Mizen Peninsula and all over West Cork as they have not been found wanting in collections down through
the years. The Jeep for Jason fundraiser is a prime example of what a great community spirit is out there.
Another fundraiser taking place at the moment is for the Palliative Care Service in West Cork. This
service needs little explanation and has touched many a home in West Cork down through the years. To
raise funds for the service a group called the Tom Ross Memorial Fund has been set up and they are
selling tickets for a draw which takes place on the 15th of November. Tickets are €2 each or 3 for €5; if
you are interested, the tickets can be got from Goleen & District Community Councillors or by ringing
0863174606.
FESTIVAL 2015 Organising is already underway for the 2015 Goleen Festival. Bands are already
booked as we can get the best you have to book early. We would like to thank all those who helped in any
in the 2014 Festival as without this help it can’t go on. Also we will be publishing our sponsors in the next
couple of weeks and we would like to thank those who sponsored as without this sponsorship the Festival
will have to be curtailed or not run at all in the future. Again thanks to all for your support. MC GDCC
Goleen GAA AGM will be held in Goleen Parish Hall on Sat Nov 15th at 9pm. Sean Sheehan PRO.
Mizen Rovers -- Now that the 2014 playing season has concluded, planning for the 2015 season is well
under way. The AGM of the Club will be held on November 29th at Goleen Community Centre and, once
more, we would ask as many as possible to come along and help us plan ahead, to keep the success and
enjoyment going. A place where there has been success and enjoyment over many years has been in
Scór competitions. Organizing the in-house section of that event, which most likely will be held over the
Christmas period, is now in train. Recently a meeting took place between officers from Mizen Rovers and
Gabriel Og with a view to improving the coaching of Gaelic football at Schull Community College. James
McCarthy, GDA for the region, attended as well and the outline of a programme was agreed, where
coaches will be identified and funding put in place. This should benefit the college teams and also the
respective Club teams going forward. As always photos and details of recent league wins can be found on
www.mizenrovers.com. Connie PRO
