Rooted in the Word of God and nourished by the Eucharist, we celebrate the life of our Lord Jesus Christ by proclaiming the Good News and providing spiritual growth, support and service with love. Founded by Italian immigrants a century ago, today our parish continues the tradition of extending a loving, caring and affirming welcome to all who join us as we Continue Our Journey of Faith. 5th Sunday in Easter B-2015 My brothers and sisters in the Lord; As a Christian it is not easy to stay in good spiritual shape. Even the best of lives can benefit from a little pruning. The good fruit we are expected to bear is love of our neighbor in word and in deed. This is the test of our genuineness because it has the stamp of the love of Christ imprinted on it. Just think how wrong it is to close our hearts and turn our backs on the people next door by gossiping about them, spreading scandal, running them into the ground and taking away their good name. There is nobody without fault and even the best of people can be torn apart on their weaker side. The decision to live love has its price and we should not minimize the difficulties involved. Barriers of hatred and prejudice cannot be broken down to make way for any kindness and tolerance unless we are prepared to cure our speech by pruning our tongues. The practical love of our neighbor will more than make up for a multitude of our own sins. My brothers and sisters, if Jesus is to have an effect on the world, it is through His followers, and living in such a way that people will see the hand of God at work in the most ordinary of situations in our lives. Jesus is dependent upon us being His hands and His voice, carrying the lamp of His redemption to others. The greatest contribution each one of us can make to the well-being of the Church is to allow Jesus’ love to seep into our own life blood. If we live in Jesus and He lives in us, the fruit we can bear is beyond imagination. It is a time to reflect on the depth of our personal inward and enduring commitment to the Gospel because apart from Jesus, there can be no lasting growth. God demands a lot from His children (that is all of us) in expecting us to make the Church a vibrant community by living good and fruitful lives. Peace, Fr. Catholics throughout the world responded this Easter Season by embarking on a Great Mission to announce the Gospel to the world in the streets and public spaces. In Nutley, some of our parishioners are proclaiming, “Christ Risen!” every Sunday afternoon at 4:00 until May 17th near the Clock Tower Courtyard on Franklin Avenue between Centre and William Streets. Brothers and sisters, there is no greater privilege than to announce the love of God, Jesus Christ’s victory over death, and eternal life being offered freely to all. Everyone is invited to attend and I encourage you to pray that this mission produces much spiritual fruit. - Father Joe TEACHING THE GOOD NEWS RELIGIOUS EDUCATION PROGRAM (CCD) FOR MORE INFORMATION, CALL: 973-667-6018 Sunday: Grades K-5, 8:30 AM-9:45 AM Tuesday: Grades 1-6, 3:30-4:45 PM ~ Classes for Spring Garden, Lincoln and Yanticaw Schools Wednesday Evening: (all schools) Grades 7 & 8 7:00-8:30 PM Thursday: Grades 1-6; 3:30-4:45 PM ~ Classes for Belleville #5, Washington & Radcliff Schools It is registration time again for the Religious Education Program. Page Five For many people, honoring the military who are currently serving, or honoring my fellow veterans, means attending the Memorial Day Ceremonies or parades, or honoring us on Veterans Day. And we certainly appreciate the respect. It’s a much deeper, and spiritual, feeling when you participate in the celebrations or memorials. Being a submarine veteran, and a member of the New Jersey North Base of United States Submarine Veterans I do have this honor. I serve the base (chapter) as the lay chaplain. I read the prayers, attend funerals, and send out Mass cards and get well cards. Quietly, I cover a few of our Corporal & Spiritual Works of Mercy, and a few Beatitudes, while serving in this position. Our national creed asks that we “…perpetuate the memory of our shipmates who gave their lives…” Recently, on April 10th my base honored a fellow submariner from Nutley, Pervis Robinson. We also honored John Holland, the father of the modern submarine. It was a rainy Friday morning on April 10th when seven members of NJ-North Base of United States Submarine Veterans gathered at John Holland's graveside in Holy Sepulcher Cemetery in Totowa NJ on April 10th to celebrate the 115th birthday of the Submarine Force for on April 11th 1900 John Phillip Holland’s Submarine the USS Holland SS-1 was accepted by the Navy and so began America's Silent Service. We also remembered that 52 years ago today on April 10th 1963 the USS Thresher SSN593 was lost with 129 brave men onboard, 16 officers, 96 enlisted men, and 17 civilian technicians. The USS Thresher was lost in the North Atlantic during deep diving tests approximately 220 miles East of Boston Massachusetts. One of Nutley's own, Pervis Robinson, perished onboard this submarine. A memorial to Robinson is located in the memorial park in front of our town hall. In addition to the USS Thresher SSN593 we performed a Tolling of the Boats ceremony for all of our submarines lost in April USS Pickerel (SS-177), April 3, 1943 - All hands lost 74 men USS Snook (SS-279), April 8, 1945, - All hands lost 84 men USS Thresher (SSN-593), April 10, 1963 - All hands lost 129 men USS Gudgeon (SS-211), April 18, 1944 - All hands lost 79 men USS Grenadier (SS-210), April 22, 1943 - 76 men taken prisoner by the Japanese, 4 died as POW’s 72 Survived the war Following the ceremony, in true shipmate comradeship, we proceeded down the road to a Dunkin' Donuts for refreshments sponsored by our COB Emeritus Ray Marshall and USSVWWII Gudgeon Chapter.
