“Townsville is unlike any other city in Australia. No city of comparable
size has quite the connection into the future prosperity of the Australian
nation as does Townsville. Townsville’s next phase of growth is likely to
accrue the critical mass in population to transform from regional centre
to a metropolitan centre’” – Bernard Salt.
Townsville is the largest city in northern Australia with an estimated population of 180,389
in 2011 projected to reach between 254,416 and 313,595 in 2031. Townsville is a popular
lifestyle destination with resulting high levels of migration and population growth.
With a diversified and stable economy, Townsville’s major contributors to the economy are
military, government, health, mining, manufacturing, education and transport.
Townsville is the key commercial centre for the broader North Queensland area, boasting
two Universities, CQU and JCU, both of whom draw students from this large catchment
area.
The strong, diversified economy of Townsville provides a solid foundation for business
growth. In the CBD, consistent population growth, business investment and increased
residential development are attracting more pedestrian traffic to the area.
The objective of the Townsville CBD Master Plan for 30,000 people to be living and
working in the inner-city by 2030 will be supported by the overall strength and stability of the
regional economy as well as the rapidly improving amenity and critical mass of the CBD.
Some of the major findings from demographic research include:
•
Townsville has a higher average income per capita than any other regional
centre within Australia’s 20 largest cities
•
Townsville residents have the highest average disposable income among
Australia’s largest regional urban centres
•
Townsville’s inner city residents are becoming increasingly more educated with
higher incomes than the metropolitan average
•
Townsville is the economic powerhouse of North Queensland, averaging
population growth of over 2% per annum
•
Townsville’s CBD based population is set to more than double over the next
15 years
•
Townsville’s inner city growth profile is likely to transform the CBD retail and
services over the next decade
•
The next phase of growth is likely to see Townsville accrue the critical mass in
population to transform from regional centre to metropolitan centre
•
Townsville is expected to become one of Australia’s Top 10 Biggest Cities
within the next 10 years
