PROVIDENCE, RI - Spring is here and with it,
the urge to get outdoors and enjoy the fresh air.
For seniors, outdoor activity is an essential part
of staying fit and healthy, but experts say before
you take on a new routine, take a few simple
steps to get ready.
Susan Vartian, fitness director at Laurelmead,
and certified personal trainer and licensed
massage therapist, has been working with older
adults for more than two decades. She carries
with her many certifications for health and
fitness, and a firm passion for working with
seniors. She works with up to 1500 visitors a
month.
"They listen, and are very appreciative," she said

Vartian suggests
before you begin
any new regime,
"no matter what your age," consult your
physician.
Start out gradually, with a "simple walk," 10 to
15 minutes at a time, then build up as your
strength grows. And get out every day, the
benefits are plentiful: "the fresh air and exercise
elevates your mood, lifts depression, increases
blood circulation, and is good for your joints from the ankle joint all the way up. "
It also boosts energy and endurance, stimulates
your mind and preserves muscle tissue and bone
density that will reward you over your
lifetime. Studies show exercise is also helpful
with any type of dementia, "stimulating the
endorphins and exercising" your brain. "You see
the trees, the birds, the grasses and plants
growing." And it has social benefits, too,
improving the quality of your life.
Vartian says it is important to move every single

doing.
"As we age, we tend to shuffle," she says. That
can lead to falls and injuries. Practicing inside,
she suggests, focus on your balance and
movement. Tai Chi and seated yoga classes can
be helpful. If you live alone, be aware of your
strengths and weaknesses and focus on building
strength in your ankles, hips and shoulders. If
you are mobile, consider joining a class or a gym
- again with the approval of a physician or
certified trainer. Knowing we lose four to 6
pounds of muscle per decade, she says, strength
training becomes essential to normal living.
"Make exercise part of your everyday routine... it
will help with activities, such as grocery
shopping and lifting bags, or lifting your
grandchildren." Optimally, walk 30 minutes a
day and do strength exercises (light weights 2-5
pounds) two to three times a week.
And don't let age be an excuse. "I have people in
their 70s, 80s, and 90s ... even a recent beginner
who was just two days shy of his 101st birthday."
