Growing up in the Midwest, one of the sayings we often heard was, “April showers bring
May flowers.” Winters are very long and brutal in the Midwest. By April people are more
than ready for spring to arrive. However, Old Man Winter doesn’t always seem to want to
let go of his grip. April becomes a battleground of sorts as the sun tries to take its hold. The
desire for sunny, warm days becomes fervent until finally May arrives and nature bursts
forth into life. It is in this beautiful month of May that the Church honors the Blessed
Virgin Mary, the Mother of the Son of God and the Mother of the Church.
The month of May is the month in which the piety of the faithful is especially dedicated to Our Blessed
Lady. It is the occasion for a moving tribute of faith and love which Catholics in every part of the world
pay to the Queen of Heaven. During this month, Christians, both in church and in the privacy of the
home, offer up to Mary from their hearts an especially fervent and loving homage of prayer and
veneration. This Christian custom of dedicating the month of May to the Blessed Virgin arose at the end
of the 13th century.
The pious practice of honoring Mary during the month of May has been especially recommended by the
Popes. Pius XII made frequent reference to it and in his great Encyclical on the Sacred Liturgy. Paul VI
wrote a short encyclical in 1965 using the Month of Mary devotion as a means of obtaining prayers for
peace. In May of 2002 Pope John Paul II said, "Today we begin the month dedicated to Our Lady, a
favorite of popular devotion. In accord with a long-standing tradition of devotion, parishes and families
continue to make the month of May a 'Marian' month, celebrating it with many devout liturgical,
catechetical and pastoral initiatives!"
In our observance of the Marian month we should take into account the season of the Liturgical Year
which largely corresponds with the fifty days of Easter. Our pious exercises could emphasize Our Lady's
participation in the Paschal mystery and in Pentecost with which the Church begins. The pious exercises
connected with the month of May can easily highlight the earthly role played by the glorified Queen of
Heaven, here and now, in the celebration of the Sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation and Holy
Eucharist.
One of the favorite traditions of the month of May is the “May Crowning”. At the May Crowning,
during a special ceremony, a crown of flowers is placed on the head of the statue of the Blessed Mother
honoring her as the queen Mother. Another tradition is the making of a “May altar”. In school, each
classroom would have a specially prepared altar with a statue or image of the Blessed Mother
surrounded by spring flowers of tulips, daffodils and peonies. At home, little versions of May altars
would also be set up. Each day, individuals, groups and families would gather around these May altars
and pray the Litany of Loreto.
As we enter into the month of May let us turn our attention to Mary, our dear and Blessed Mother. It
was Jesus’ last will and testament that Mary be the Mother of the Church. As Mary and the Apostle
John stood beneath the cross, Jesus said to His mother, “Woman, behold your son.” Then to John He
said, “Behold your mother.” From that hour on John, on behalf of the Church, accepted Mary as his
mother and took her into his care. Mary is our Mother; a gift to the Church from our Savior himself. As
Jesus loved her, so do we. May this month of May help us to renew our love and devotion to Mary.
O Mary, Mother of the Church, pray for us!
Fr. Gerry

FIFTH SUNDAY OF EASTER - 5
Faith Formation
Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults
Enrollment 2015-2016
Are you thinking about joining the Catholic Church or learning more about it? Ask
yourself these questions:
•
Where is your journey of faith leading you?
•
Are you interested in knowing more about the Catholic Faith?
•
Do you know someone who might be interested?
If so, come and see what the RCIA process is all about. The Right of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) is
a process for non-Catholics who are interested in (or even just thinking about) joining the Catholic Church.
It’s also a process for those who have not received all of their Catholic Sacraments.
Each year our parish begins this process to welcome any and all who are curious about, interested in, or just
want to know more about the Christian faith as it is lived and celebrated in the Roman Catholic Tradition.
This process is an amicable faith-sharing among friends.

BEARING FRUIT
“Children, let us love not in word or speech but in
deed and truth.” John’s words come to us on this
day when the Gospel passage presents us with the
great image of the vine and the branches. Jesus uses
the image as a warning to those who have begun to
distance themselves from the way of the Lord. One
of the ways this happens is when we love God and
others “in word or speech” instead of “in deed and
truth.” What does it mean for us to “remain in
Christ”? In an extension of the metaphor, the Lord
gives us an example. If we remain in him, we will
bear much fruit. As the branches, we draw strength
from Christ who is the vine. This strength enables us
to bear fruit—to do the work of true discipleship.

Pre-K through 8th Grade 2015/2016
All parents with prospective students for the 2015 / 2016 school year are invited to stop by the school office to pick up an
informational packet which contains documentation outlining the school screening process. If you are unable to stop by the
office, please call 702-802-2323 and we will be happy to mail you a packet. There will be a test fee of $25 and can be paid on
or before the day of the test. Please return the application form to the school office as soon as possible. Children must be 5
years of age on or before September 30, 2015 to be eligible for Kindergarten for the 2015 / 2016 school year. Due to
the large amount of inquiries received, the screening appointments may become unavailable at any time and without notice.
