From the Pastor’s Desk
Mesaj ki soti nan biwo Kiré pawas la
Dear Parishioners:
As we come to the Second Sunday of Easter (the
Easter Octave) and this Divine Mercy Sunday, I
renew for all my Easter greetings to all and add my
thanks to all who prepared and carried out the
liturgical celebrations of the Easter Triduum. I was
edified by the increased attendance at all these
liturgies. Would that I could witness this increase
every Sunday—for every Sunday is Easter!
Today’s Gospel brings us the greeting of the Risen
Lord: “Peace be with you!” Isn’t peace the great
desire of our hearts? In our busy lives we yearn for
peace and quiet. We desire peace within our families
and workplaces! We are anxious because peace
seems beyond our grasp in a world of violence and
terrorism! The late Cardinal Basil Hume wrote:
We are tempted to feel that there are forces
outside our control, that the world is lurching from
one disaster to another, as indeed it does. But the
God who cannot take His eyes off us does not
cease to care and be concerned for us. It is we
who create so many of the world’s problems, and
we can resolve many of them with the power and
the skills that God has given us. The eyes of God
are on us. And they have a longing and a wanting
in them for us, for you and for me. He wants us to
know and love Him, and that happiness can begin
now, but will only be complete when life is over,
and there is a new beginning for us. We can face
the future with confidence, not because we are
strong, wise and successful, but because we have
a God who loves us and wants us. All he asks
from us in return is that we try to love Him, that we
try to serve him. We have to keep our eyes on
Him.
Prayer is part of our search for peace. Let us pray
then for peace in our own lives within our homes and
our world. Prayer is a pledge of action. It involves
turning from anger, hostility, bitterness, being spiteful
or manipulative and even vengeful. In other words,
Christ’s peace must first find a place within our own
hearts. There has to be a radical change of heart, a
conversion, a death to the sinful ways of pride and
self-centeredness…to borrow the words of a song we
know so well: ”Let there be peace on earth and let it
begin with me!”
With affection,
Msgr. Gervasio

"Nou eseye panse ke gen anpil fòs ke nou te

saj,n'ap byenmennen, men paske nou gen
yon Bondye ki renmen nou e ki vle nou. Tout
sa Li mande nou an retou se renmen Li e sèvi
Li. Nou dwe fkse rega nou sou Li".
Lapriyè fè pati rechèch nou pou lapè, Kidonk, an
nou lapriyè pou lapè nan pwòp lavi nou, anndan lakay
nou ak pou lemond. Lapriyè se yon pwomès daksyon.
Li la pou'l transfòme kòlè, hostilite, amètim,

kap di yon lòt fason, lapè Kris la dwe dabò jwenn

fyète, de respè imen an. Nou ta renmen reprann
pawòl ki nan chante ke nou konnen trè byen: "Se pou
gen lapè sou tè a epi kite'l kòmanse avèk mwen".

Anointing of the Sick
7:00 p.m.
Tuesday, April 28
Our Lady of Sorrows Church
By the sacred anointing of the sick and the prayer of
the priests, the whole Church commends those who
are ill to the suffering and glorified Lord, that he may
raise them up and save them.” (CCC 1499)
Who may receive this sacrament?
Those awaiting a surgery of a serious nature.
The elderly who are notably weakened, even if not
seriously ill.
Sick children may be strengthened through this
anointing.
Our parish invites all those Catholics who may be ill to
this sacred encounter that they might know that Christ,
who often visited and healed the sick, loves them in
their illness.

Support the Annual Catholic Appeal!
We are close to half way to reaching our parish goal.
Many thanks to all who generously supported this
important appeal. Gifts to the appeal are always
welcome. If you did not yet donate, please consider
making a gift. Meeting our goal of $110,000 will
qualify the parish for a “rebate” for parish needs.
Drop your gift in our regular collection and mark the
envelope “Annual Catholic Appeal.” (Please make
checks payable to the Annual Catholic Appeal, not to
OLS-SA.) We'll gladly forward your gift to the

Opening of the 2016 Mass Books
Parish May Crowning
The 2016 Mass Books for both of our churches will
open on Tuesday, April 28. On that day, we will be
taking your 2016 Mass intentions from 10:00 a.m. to
noon and from 2:00 to 3:00 p.m. in the church hall
at the OLS campus. Intentions will be taken on a first
come - first served basis, but in the interest of fairness
to all, please limit your request for Sunday
intentions to four during this initial opening. As in
the past, we ask that you bring a list of intentions
desired (name of person to be remembered at the
Mass and name of the person requesting the
intention) in date order. The donation for each
intention is $10.
Weekly tabernacle light intentions ($15 per lamp) as
well as weekend flower arrangement dedications
($75/arrangement) for both churches for 2016 and the
remainder of 2015 may also be requested at this time.
Weekday Mass intentions for 2015 at both churches
are still available. Anyone desiring them may go to the
parish office at any time during regular office hours.

OLS PTA Seeking Donations
Save the date! The OLS PTA’s 5th Annual Knight to
Remember is scheduled for Friday, October 9!
This is a tricky tray style event and through the
generous donations of our school families,
parishioners, and the community at large, we were
able to assemble
more than 230 gift
baskets to raffle off
last
year.
All
proceeds from this
event benefit the
students of Our Lady
of Sorrows School.
We are in need of your help once again! Have you
come across items in your closet that you purchased
for gifts but never gave out? Did you get a gift that
you wanted to exchange but never got back to the
store? Why not donate it to our event? We are looking
for new and unused items as well as baskets or
containers (i.e., hat boxes, photo boxes, totes, etc.) to
help create these wonderful gift baskets once again.
Unfortunately, due to the nature of the event we
cannot accept clothing or “gently used” items.
Donations can be dropped off at school’s main office
between 8:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. Simply label the
donation “KTR.” Please do not drop off donations at
the Parish Office. If you have a question or would like
further information, please contact Liz Landi (6318033 or elandicsr@msn.com).

weekly “shuttling” of children to the parish campus
from September through May. Class time is the same
as the regular program but condensed into a twoweek period. his “intensive” plan provides for a more
focused approach and retention of the subject matter.

Seven Things about Divine Mercy Sunday
by Jimmy Akin (Edited from National Catholic Register)
1. What is Divine Mercy Sunday?
Divine Mercy Sunday is celebrated on the Second
Sunday of Easter. It is based on the private
revelations of Our Lord to St. Faustina Kowalska, a
Polish nun (1905-1938) which recommended a
particular devotion to the Divine Mercy. It also has
a foundation in Scripture and the liturgical readings
of the Second Sunday of Easter.
An indulgence is partial or temporary as it removes
either part or all of the temporal punishment due to
sin. They may be applied for the living or the dead.
(CCC, # 1471-1479) The usual conditions for a
plenary indulgence are: sacramental confession,
Holy Communion and prayer for the intentions of
the Pope. The faithful are granted this indulgence
who on Divine Mercy meet these conditions and
participate in devotions held in honor of Divine
Mercy, or in the presence of the Blessed
Sacrament recite the Our Father and Creed, adding
a prayer to the merciful Lord Jesus.
2. When was it made part of the Church's
calendar?
In 2000, Pope John Paul II canonized St. Faustina and,
during the ceremony, he declared: “It is important then
that we accept the whole message that comes to us
from the word of God on this Second Sunday of Easter,
which from now on throughout the Church will be
called "Divine Mercy Sunday."
5. What is the Divine Mercy image?
The image is a depiction of
Jesus based on a vision that St.
Faustina had in 1931. Jesus is
shown raising his right hand in
blessing, and pointing with his
left hand on his chest from
which flow forth two translucent
rays: one red and one white
The depiction often contains
the message "Jesus, I trust in
You!" (Polish: Jezu ufam
Tobie). The red rays symbolize
the blood of Jesus (which is the Life of Souls), and
white rays symbolize water (which justifies souls)
The whole image is symbolic of charity, forgiveness
and love of God, the "Fountain of Mercy.
3. If based on private revelation, why is it on the
Church's calendar?
Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger, the future Benedict XVI
wrote of private revelation:
“…Private revelations often spring from popular
piety…This does this exclude that they will have an
effect even on the liturgy, as we see…in the feasts
of Corpus Christi and of the Sacred Heart. ,From
one point of view, the relationship between
Revelation and private revelations appears in the
relationship between the liturgy and popular piety:
The liturgy is the criterion, it is the living form of the
Church…fed directly by the Gospel. Popular piety is
a sign that the faith is spreading its roots into the
heart of a people in such a way that it reaches into
daily life. Popular religiosity is the first and
fundamental mode of “inculturation” of the faith.
While it must always take its lead and direction
from the liturgy, it enriches the faith by involving the
heart.
6. What is the Chaplet of Divine Mercy?
It is a prayer said using a standard set of Rosary
beads, often at 3 p.m. (the time of Jesus' death),
but with different set of prayers than those used in
the Marian Rosary.
7. How is the Divine Mercy devotion linked to
the readings for the Second Sunday of Easter?
The Divine Mercy image depicts Jesus at the
moment he appears to the disciples in the Upper
Room, after the Resurrection, when he empowers
them to forgive or retain sins.
(John 20:19-31) which is the Gospel reading for this
Sunday. The Gospel includes the appearance of
Jesus to St. Thomas (in which occurred on the
eighth day after the Resurrection (John 20:26), and
so it is used in the liturgy eight days after Easter.
4. How does the Church promote Divine Mercy
Sunday?
So that the faithful would observe this day with
great devotion, the Pope St. John Paul established
that it be enriched by a plenary indulgence. An
indulgence is a remission before God of the
temporal punishment due to sins whose guilt has
already been forgiven, which the faithful Christian
who is duly disposed gains under certain
prescribed conditions, through the action of the
Church, which as minister of redemption, dispenses
and applies with authority the treasury of the
satisfactions of Christ and the saints.
