Our Mission Statement We are the Parish of Our Lady of Sorrows Saint Anthony, a Roman Catholic Community; as one Eucharistic Family, we are Christ-centered and Spirit-led. Children of God our Father, we are united by His Love and sustained by the intercession of Our Lady and Saint Anthony. We give witness to our faith in action. 2 From the Pastor’s Desk Mesaj ki soti nan biwo Kire-a Dear Parishioners: Yesterday (April 18), one hundred and one of our young parishioners were sealed with the gift of the Holy Spirit in the Sacrament of Confirmation. We were pleased to welcome to our parish Monsignor Michael Walsh to confer the sacrament. In the past, Confirmation Day made many young people anxious. Memorizing the responses to many questions was paramount and there was the added fear that one would be called to answer a question before the bishop and the congregation. Times have certainly changed. But the sacrament’s meaning and serious preparation for its reception have not. Our parish program provides for regular doctrinal formation through regular classes, a retreat experience, sponsor involvement, writing reflection papers on the life of a candidate’s saint, and a personal interview with the clergy or catechist, as well as undertaking works of charity and service. I am grateful to Mrs. Francis and all our catechists who helped prepare our newly confirmed. I am grateful to the parents and sponsors of the newly confirmed who by their love, prayers and sacrifices brought them to this important day. We pray that every young man and women anointed with sacred Chrism will remain faithful to the Lord. The Catechism of the Catholic Church reminds us that Confirmation… • Brings us an increase and deepening of baptismal grace • Roots us more deeply in the divine filiation • Unites us more firmly in Christ • Increases the gifts of the Holy Spirit in us • Renders our bond with the Church more perfect • Gives us strength to spread and defend the Faith boldly In our congratulations to the newly confirmed let us implore the Holy Spirit to renew His gifts within us. May his “fruits” be seen in our daily lives: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, trustfulness, gentleness and self control. With affection, Msgr. It's a great feeling to arrive home! We have all felt the feelings of warmth and love as we have arrived at our home after a long time away. Well, the warmth and love was felt most strongly this week as national bestselling author Edward Bloor visited our parish school. Mr. Bloor attended our school Mass and Grade 7 ring ceremony on Friday, April 17. What a great time to return to Our Lady of Sorrows School! Mr. Bloor, a graduate of our parish school, joined the children and warmly recalled his days at Mass at our parish church. This once Seventh Grader is now a bestselling author of novels for young adults, best known for Tangerine and London Calling. He is the son of Edward William and Mary (Cowley) Bloor, parishioners of Our Lady of Sorrows-St. Anthony. Mr. Bloor is a novelist and editor as well as a former English teacher in Florida. He currently works as a senior editor for Harcourt Brace School Publishers. After Mass he met informally with the children before enjoying a tour of his former school! Act of Faith, Works of Love Thanks to all who returned their 2015 Annual Catholic Appeal pledge cards, our parish is now 52% of the way to its goal! If you are one of the 303 who made a pledge or a one-time donation, thank you! If, however, you wanted a little time to prayerfully consider pledging, but mislaid your pledge card or haven’t yet returned it, please take this opportunity to do so. Your Act of Faith that will facilitate Works of Love. And when we exceed our goal, money returns to our parish! Drop your gift in our regular collection and mark the envelope “Annual Catholic Appeal.” (Please make checks payable to the Annual Catholic Appeal, not to OLS-SA.) We'll gladly forward your gift to the diocese. Friday, was a most busy day for Our Lady of Sorrows students. Our Seventh Grade students planned the school Mass and then proudly received their rings marking their connection to our school. Monsignor Gervasio blessed the rings and then congratulated each of our young adults. Best wishes Seventh Graders! Wear your ring with pride! You have joined a very special group of people. Many thanks to Mrs. Tuohy, Grade Seven teacher for her time and dedication to this very special event. A special recognition and blessing is also extended to our Grade 8 students who were confirmed on Saturday morning. This week was a very exciting time for them as the final practices were focused upon the confirmation ceremony. The children have worked with their teachers, Mrs. Emde and Mr. Prendergast, as they have prepared for this moment in their lives. The children proudly walked their list of confirmation names to the church office. A bit of pre-confirmation excitement was shared as the students joined together for a light breakfast before our school Mass. Good bless our newly confirmed! Time's Growing Short! This is a tricky tray style event and through the generous donations of our school families, parishioners, and the community at large, we were able to assemble more than 230 gift baskets to raffle off last year. All proceeds from this event benefit the students of Our Lady of Sorrows School. We are in need of your help once again! Have you come across items in your closet that you purchased for gifts but never gave out? Did you get a gift that you wanted to exchange but never got back to the store? Why not donate it to our event? We are looking for new and unused items as well as baskets or containers (i.e., hat boxes, photo boxes, totes, etc.) to help create these wonderful gift baskets once again. Unfortunately, due to the nature of the event we cannot accept clothing or “gently used” items. Donations can be dropped off at school’s main office between 8:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. Simply label the donation “KTR.” Please do not drop off donations at the Parish Office. If you have a question or would like further information, please contact Liz Landi (6318033 or elandicsr@msn.com).
