that we seek to do in God’s service.

Celebrating the gift of the Holy Spirit, the Ripon Episcopal Area and Bishop
James
It was good to see a large number of people at the Ascension Day Eucharist on
Thursday Evening. Many thanks to the Lay Clerks and members of the Cathedral
Consort who gave us a good musical lead. Also, thank you to those who provided the
delightful wine and canapés following the service.
St. Luke tells us that the risen Christ ascended to heaven forty days after his
resurrection and then, ten days later, at Pentecost, he sent the Holy Spirit on his
followers. Next Sunday is the Feast of Pentecost when we shall be thanking God for
the gift of his Spirit. During the Songs of Parise service at 5.30pm (preceded by
refreshments) when we have both Bishop Nick and Bishop James with us, we shall also
celebrate the work of the Spirit in the parishes of this episcopal area. The service gives
Bishop Nick an opportunity to commission Bishop James for his new role as Area
Bishop of Ripon. Please, do join us.
The Installation of the Mayor and an earlier time for the Cathedral Eucharist
In a ceremony at Ripon Town Hall tomorrow, Councillor Pauline McHardy will become
the city s new mayor. We pray for Pauline and all city councillors at the beginning of
this new mayoral year. We also pray for the other councillors and MPs across the
region.
The Mayor will be installed here at the Cathedral next Sunday morning at 11.15am.
Please, note, this means that the Eucharist a‘d Chi–dre‘ s Church wi–– be at 9.30a—:
we d’‘ t wa‘t y’u t’ —iss ’ut inadvertently!
Christian Aid Week
Last week was Christian Aid Week. I am grateful to those members of the Cathedral
Community who took part in the house-to-house collection; often regarded as the
biggest annual act of Christian witness in Britain and Ireland. In very impressive ways,
Christian Aid provides urgent, practical and effective assistance where need is great;
tackling the effects of poverty as well as its root causes. Please continue to pray for its
work.
Christians Against Poverty
You may be interested to know that the Archbishop of Canterbury has become the
first patron of Christians Against Poverty. The charity runs debt services, helping
people to escape from debt. Around 60 of its 280 centres are based in Church of
England churches.
With my very best wishes

Collect
O God the King of glory, you have exalted your only Son Jesus Christ with great
triumph to your kingdom in heaven: we beseech you, leave us not comfortless,
but send your Holy Spirit to strengthen us and exalt us to the place where our Saviour
Christ is gone before, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, now and for ever.
First Reading
A reading from Acts of the Apostles
In those days Peter stood up among the believers (together the crowd numbered
ab’ut ’‘e hu‘dred a‘d twe‘ty pe’p–e). He said, Frie‘ds, the scripture had t’ be
fulfilled, which the Holy Spirit through David foretold concerning Judas, who became
a guide for those who arrested Jesus for he was numbered among us and was
allotted his share in this ministry. So one of the men who have accompanied us
throughout the time that the Lord Jesus went in and out among us, beginning from
the baptism of John until the day when he was taken up from us one of these must
bec’—e a wit‘ess with us t’ his resurrecti’‘. S’ they pr’p’sed tw’, J’seph ca––ed
Barsabbas, who was also known as Justus, and Matthias. Then they prayed and said,
L’rd, y’u k‘’w every’‘e s heart. Sh’w us which ’‘e ’f these two you have chosen
to take the place in this ministry and apostleship from which Judas turned aside to go
t’ his ’w‘ p–ace. A‘d they cast –’ts f’r the—, a‘d the –’t fe–– ’‘ Matthias; a‘d he was
added to the eleven apostles.
[1. 15-17, 21-end]
Psalm 1
BLESSED is the man that hath not walked in the counsel of the ungodly, nor stood in
the way of sinners : and hath not sat in the seat of the scornful. But his delight is in
the law of the Lord : and in his law will he exercise himself day and night. And he shall
be like a tree planted by the water-side : that will bring forth his fruit in due season.
His leaf also shall not wither : and look, whatsoever he doeth, it shall prosper. As for
the ungodly, it is not so with them : but they are like the chaff, which the wind
scattereth away from the face of the earth. Therefore the ungodly shall not be able
to stand in the judgement : neither the sinners in the congregation of the righteous.
But the Lord knoweth the way of the righteous : and the way of the ungodly shall
perish.
Second Reading
A reading from the first letter of John
If we receive human testimony, the testimony of God is greater; for this is the
testimony of God that he has testified to his Son. Those who believe in the Son of God
have the testimony in their hearts. Those who do not believe in God have made him a
liar by not believing in the testimony that God has given concerning his Son. And this
is the testimony: God gave us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. Whoever has the
Son has life; whoever does not have the Son of God does not have life. I write these
things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, so that you may know that
you have eternal life.
[5. 9-13]
Gospel Reading
Hear the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to John
All Glory to you O Lord
Jesus –’’ked up t’ heave‘ a‘d prayed: Father, I have —ade y’ur ‘a—e k‘’w‘ t’
those whom you gave me from the world. They were yours, and you gave them to
me, and they have kept your word. Now they know that everything you have given
me is from you; for the words that you gave to me I have given to them, and they
have received them and know in truth that I came from you; and they have believed
that you sent me. I am asking on their behalf; I am not asking on behalf of the world,
but on behalf of those whom you gave me, because they are yours. All mine are
yours, and yours are mine; and I have been glorified in them. And now I am no longer
in the world, but they are in the world, and I am coming to you. Holy Father, protect
them in your name that you have given me, so that they may be one, as we are one.
While I was with them, I protected them in your name that you have given me. I
guarded them, and not one of them was lost except the one destined to be lost, so
that the scripture might be fulfilled. But now I am coming to you, and I speak these
things in the world so that they may have my joy made complete in themselves. I
have given them your word, and the world has hated them because they do not
belong to the world, just as I do not belong to the world. I am not asking you to take
them out of the world, but I ask you to protect them from the evil one. They do not
belong to the world, just as I do not belong to the world. Sanctify them in the truth;
your word is truth. As you have sent me into the world, so I have sent them into the
world. And for their sakes I sanctify myself, so that they also may be sanctified in
truth.
[7. 6-19]
Anthem
If ye love me, keep my commandments. And I will pray the Father, and he shall give
you another Comforter, that he may bide with you for ever; even the Spirit of truth.
Prayer after Communion
Eternal God, giver of love and power, your Son Jesus Christ has sent us into all the
world to preach the gospel of his kingdom: confirm us in this mission, and help us to
live the good news we proclaim; through Jesus Christ our Lord.
