Welcome to the Cathedral
Dear Parishioners, Friends, and Visitors to the Cathedral,
Before we take a look at our Saint for this week, I just want to mention
that our new courtyard project between the Cathedral and the parking
garage is nearing completion. Our maintenance man, Kenny, along with
Bill, a generous volunteer, constructed the tables over the past two weeks –
a special thanks to both of them. They look great and will allow us to have
parish gatherings after Mass in that area (during the warmer weather of
course) and to accommodate other functions. Be sure and check them out.
This week, we will celebrate a Saint who was a man of deep prayer and
utter simplicity – Saint Isidore the Farmer. Many have asked, what made
this man the holy Saint that he is? The answer – he was outstanding in his
field (get it?). Born in 1070 in Madrid, Spain, to a very poor family, Isidore
essentially spent his entire life working as a farm laborer for a rich land
owner named John de Vergas. Although his parents could not afford any
sort of formal education for their son, they none-the-less instilled in him
a deep love for prayer and an abhorrence of sin. Every morning before
Isidore would begin his work in the fields, he would go to Mass, which
caused him to be delayed in starting his ploughing and planting. When
some of his fellow laborers complained to the landowner, he investigated
and found that despite Isidore’s late start, he was able to accomplish more
than any of the other men (one tradition even holds that upon coming to
check up on him, John de Vergas saw two angels ploughing on either side
of Isidore). Even though he would remain very poor throughout his entire
life, he still gave whatever he could spare to the poor, recognizing that
even what little he had was not his, but a gift from God.
Saint Isidore married a girl like himself, poor, holy, & also a canonized
Saint, named Mary de la Cabeza (her surname is a latter appellation,
because the relic of her head has been carried in procession in Spain during
times of drought). They had one son, who died in his youth, and from
that point forward, they decided to live their married life in perpetual
continence. During his lifetime, Isidore was given numerous visions and
a number of miraculous actions are reported to have been performed
by him – Once, when his son fell in to a deep well, his prayers caused
the water to rise so that they could get him out; while taking a sack of
corn to the mill, he gave half of it to some hungry birds, but by the time
he arrived at the mill, the sack was once again full; he is said to have
brought his master’s deceased daughter back to life; and caused a spring
to miraculously burst forth from the dry ground. Even after his death in
1130, miracles continued to be associated with him – King Philip III of
Spain was cured of a deadly disease by touching his relics.
Each of us has a deep longing for God, but sometimes we try to satisfy
that longing with something other than God. Saint Thomas Aquinas
taught that there are four classical substitutes for God – wealth, pleasure,
power, and prestige (that’s not to say that these things are bad in themselves,
only when they dominate our lives). We seek them out thinking that they
will somehow make us happy. And while they might be enjoyable for a
time, on the surface, they cannot ultimately satisfy the deep longing of
our heart, because our hearts were not made for these things. Saint Isidore
the Farmer was a man of deep communion with God because of his life of
prayer. He had neither wealth nor prestige, yet his heart overflowed with
the peace and joy that all of us want, because he had the one thing that all
of us were made for – Jesus Christ.
who believes in him might not perish but might have eternal life. Jn 3:16

Disaster Relief for Nepal - In response to the devastating
7.8 magnitude earthquake that
struck near Kathmandu, Nepal
on April 25, Catholic Relief
Services has asked the Bishops of
the United States to take a second
collection for the benefit of the
estimated 2.5 million people
affected. The people of Nepal desperately need our prayers and
support. CRS, and our partner Caritas Nepal, are supporting 15,000
families with emergency shelter, blankets, and water treatment &
hygiene kits. Catholic Relief Services emergency personnel are on the
ground, providing aid to 15,000 families affected by this powerful
earthquake. You can help. We request that checks be made out to
St. John Cathedral with “Earthquake Relief ” in the memo line. One
check will then be sent on to Catholic Relief Services, the official
Catholic humanitarian agency in the US.
The Catechetical Services Collection, which had been scheduled for
this weekend, has been moved to May 30/31.
Congratulations to our very own Deacon
John Sferry, who will celebrate his 25th
Anniversary of Ordination to the Permanent
Diaconate on May 19th! Let us take a moment
to thank him for his continuing devoted
service and wish him every blessing as his
ministry continues!
Rite Aid Cleveland Marathon races on May
16 & 17 will not affect travel to the Cathedral as much
as previous years. There will be no necessity to cross
the courses, with a couple route cautions. Those
coming from Lakewood and the near west side may
have closures in their neighborhood. On both Saturday and Sunday,
the West Shoreway will be closed all day. On Sunday, for the 8:00
am Mass, those coming from the east should avoid Carnegie from
22nd to 9th Street; those coming from the west on I 90 should avoid
the 9th Street exit, and use the Superior Avenue exit. For route
specifics, check the web page: <clevelandmarathon.com/Home/>.

The Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist 10 Creative ways to
Reuse & Recycle -Similar
to a track left by an elephant
in the mud, humans have
left our carbon footprint
on the world. Going green is the latest
craze in an effort to combat this issue, and
implementing eco friendly practices into
our daily routines is absolutely paramount
to recovering from the damage inflicted by
us on our environment. Many individuals
are reluctant to adopt environmentally
friendly practices, due to expense or
mundane tedious tasks, so the following
are ten creative ways to go reuse and recycle
while also keeping your budget in mind:
1. Create a Bin or Tray in Your Home
Office for Scrap Paper
2. Buy Recycled Grocery Tote Bags for
Gift Bags
3. Grow a House Plant That Can be Easily
Separated
4. Use Citrus Peels as Air Fresheners
5. Reuse Plastic Containers
6. Use Household Materials for Crafts
7. Eat a Peanut Butter and Jelly Sandwich
instead of a meat and potatoes meal
8. Buy Recycled Products
9. Clothing Swap
10.Repurpose an Item

Homily
Sing to the Lord a new song, for he has done wondrous deeds;
His right hand has won victory for him, his holy arm.
The Lord has made his salvation known: in the sight of the
nations he has revealed his justice. He has remembered his
kindness and his faithfulness toward the house of Israel.
All the ends of the earth have seen the salvation by our God.
Sing joyfully to the Lord, all you lands; break into song; sing
praise.
Psalms for the Week
Sat: Let all the earth cry out to God with joy.
Mon: The Lord takes delight in his people.
Tue: Your right hand saves me, O Lord.
Wed: Heaven and earth are full of your glory.
Thur:The Lord will give him a seat with the leaders of his people.
Fri: God is king of all the earth.

I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Only Begotten Son of
God, born of the Father before all ages.
God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God,
begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father; through
him all things were made.
For us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven,
(All bow)
and by the Holy Spirit
was incarnate of the Virgin Mary,
and became man.
For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate, he suffered
death and was buried, and rose again on the third day in
accordance with the Scriptures.
He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the
Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the
dead and his kingdom will have no end.
People: Thanks be to God
I believe in one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church.
I confess one Baptism for the forgiveness of sins
and I look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life
of the world to come. Amen.

No one has greater love than this, to lay down one's life for one's
friends. You are my friends if you do what I command.

If you keep my commandments, you will remain in my love, just
as I have kept my Father's commandments, and remain in his
love.
This is my commandment: love one another. Love one another as
I love you.
It was not you who chose me, but I who chose you, and
appointed you to go and bear fruit, fruit that will remain.

Easter VI
Centering Prayer is a spiritual practice of our Catholic contemplative
tradition that opens us more deeply to a relationship with God in faith
and intimacy. Our group meets on Monday evenings from 6:30 –
8:00 pm in the Lower Sacristy. All are welcome.
2015 First Step Programs - Attempting to pick
up the pieces of one’s life after the tragedy of divorce is
complex and demanding. One of the significant issues
that a person faces is their place in the Church. Does the
Church still care about me even though I am divorced?
Am I allowed to go to Mass? Can I receive communion? How can the
Church help me heal? If I decide to marry again, what do I have to do?
The Tribunal of the Diocese of Cleveland is continuing to offer
its very successful First Step Program in order to help individuals
deal with these questions. The Church’s teachings on marriage,
divorce, and remarriage are often misunderstood. This program
is offered to help everyone, especially those who have experienced
divorce, learn more about Catholic teaching in these areas. Please
refer to the Tribunal website <dioceseofcleveland.org/tribunal> for
testimonials about the program from past participants, or information:
or call the Tribunal: 216-696-6525/800-869-6525, ext. 4000. The next
general meeting, open to all, is Tuesday, May 12, at St. Gabriel Parish,
Concord, at 7:00 pm.
Pilgrimage 2015 - Join with us this summer for the Year of
Consecrated Life Pilgrimage from June 7, to September 13, 2015.
Religious communities will be opening the doors of their homes and
centers of ministry to welcome and connect personally with pilgrims,
to discover the beauty of Christ’s love and how to live our relationship
with Jesus Christ on our journey to God who is the beginning and end
of life’s pilgrimage.
