JESUS IN HIS PASSION A CONTEMPLATION – Part 2 I am forced to carry this load, uphill through the bazzar, and I fall under its weight. Father, I can hear the cursing from my people; the soldiers whip me to get moving. My own mother has come to follow me. Seeing her tearful face, I am sorry that she has to see me like this. I stop to spend a quiet moment with her; but I am struck to move on. The soldiers can see that I won’t make it up the hill; they force a Cyrenian to assist me. I hear the grumbling from his mouth; but his words become soothing as he takes the weight upon his shoulders too. I look for my disciples. Where are these men? But the only person who is victorious in brooking this jeering mob is a woman. She takes her handkerchief and spreads it across my face. I am comforted by her brave action, she is roughly pulled away from me. Despite the help from the foreigner, I keep falling and keep feeling the stings of the lash to get up again. Other women who desire to aid me themselves need to be comforted. Father, You give me the energy to do this. I don’t know how I reached the top of this hill; it’s the one that looks like a skull. I’m exhausted and have lost all composure. The soldiers strip me of all of my clothing. My shameful and beaten body is exposed. They throw me upon the beam, tie my arms to it, and drive a stake through each wrist. I can no longer bear the pain; I scream. I scream again when my feet are placed together, and another stake fixes my feet to wood. They raise this beam. The jolt as they jab the beam into the hole sends a shock wave through my entire body. In my despair I cry out: “Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachtani” I feel utterly abandoned even by You, Father; I can only pray the psalm my mother taught me. I also ask You to forgive the people who are doing this to me. The Jewish leaders do not recognize me as Your Anointed Son; and the Romans are past masters regarding crucifying criminals. One of the thieves at my side is touched by the way he sees me dying and asks me to remember him. I assure him that paradise is his reward. My mother is now a lonely widow. I have no way to care for her. As an obedient son, I entrust her to my Beloved Disciple who waits the death knell with her. The scourging and the sweating have completely dehydrated me. I thirst for some liquid to slacken my throat. I also thirst for souls who like sheep go astray and for those who do not even know that they are straying. Father, I willingly chose to follow Your plan: I willingly choose to commend my entire being into Your hands; I trust that Your love for me is stronger than death. In the eyes of everyone who sees me on the cross, I am a complete failure. But I have perfectly finished all the work you have given to me. Your plan for saving all of my brothers and sisters is completed. Now I can die in peace. I am happy and content to be in Your hands. My head falls; I breathe my last; I hand over my Spirit. Fr. Memories of St. Therese Cheryl and I moved here in 1995. While looking for a place to build our house, Cheryl journeyed up I77 to Exit 33 and by accident found St. Therese. When she entered the Church, she felt the wonderful presence of the Holy Spirit and knew that this is where we were meant to be. Months later we were moved here and I was assigned by Bishop Curlin to this parish. St. Therese had 650 families in September 1995. My first year with RCIA we had 6 people. In 1998 we grew to 1300 families and divided the parish to create St. Mark. RCIA had 18 people. Now we have almost 3500 families and over 700 of God’s Holy People have received Sacraments of Initiation at Our Easter Vigils. We give praise and thanksgiving to the Holy Spirit who is very present in this place. The procession in church is an impressive act of loyalty to Christ the King. Christ reigns as king of the Christian home also, and so a family prayer service within the house is a memorable part of this day. After the family meal, the members gather in the living room. From the palms received at the parish Mass, they prepare small crosses of palm to be pinned above the doorway of each room or woven palms to be placed behind the crucifix in each room. Then the father reads the account of Christ's triumphal entry into Jerusalem from the family Bible (Matt. 21:1-11). Thereupon the mother, with a lighted candle, may lead a procession from one room to another. Appropriate psalms may be read aloud during the procession, especially Psalms 147, 23 and 46. During the procession the children joyfully wave their blessed palms. After the rooms of the house have been visited, all return to the living room. Here the father prays a final prayer asking God to bless all the places to which these palms have been carried. P.
