Business Women’s Forum is an annual, regional event co-hosted by the West Shore, Greater Carlisle Area and Harrisburg Regional Chambers of Commerce. In addition, the Gettysburg Adams Area, Mechanicsburg, Shippensburg and York County Chambers also provide marketing support for this event. Attendees enjoyed a wide variety of breakout sessions in addition to the keynote presentation from Areva Martin, award winning attorney, syndicated columnist, author and speaker. During the event luncheon, Ms. Martin presented “Freedom to Breathe”. This presentation took the audience on a brief tour of women’s historical role as caregivers and helpers to present day, where although we live in a society that legally empowers us, many women still remain in the background, un-empowered and struggling. (Continued on next page) Junior Leadership Class of 2012 Graduates Twenty-Nine Students On May 2, the West Shore Chamber of Commerce Foundation held its graduation for the Class of 2012 Junior Leaders. The graduation was held at Cumberland Valley High School and began with a breakfast buffet in the cafeteria followed by a graduation ceremony in the Performing Arts Center. The Class of 2012 graduated twenty-nine students from Cumberland Valley, Mechanicsburg, Camp Hill, Trinity, East Pennsboro, Cedar Cliff and Big Spring High Schools. Scott Shirley, Executive Director, Uplifting Athletes, spoke to the eighty people in attendance made up of students, teachers, administrators, volunteers, Chamber members and staff. He shared his insights on leadership and how he became the face of Uplifting Athletes, a national charitable organization whose mission is to raise money and awareness for rare disease research. Scott’s message of “Together…We Are… Stronger!” was inspirational and thought-provoking for everyone in attendance. Alex Swade, Trinity High School, and Chris Walker, Cedar Cliff High School, shared thoughts of what they learned from the Junior Leadership program and how it will help them as they enter their senior year of high school and beyond. Sales4You 7 Governmental Affairs Committee Hosts Budget Secretary Charles Zogby The West Shore Chamber of Commerce’s Governmental Affairs Committee recently hosted a breakfast briefing featuring a presentation by Budget Secretary Charles Zogby at the West Shore Country Club. Several Chamber members in attendance requested that specific areas of the state budget be addressed. One area included education, and a recommendation that statewide health coverage for all school districts be put in place, rather than five separate programs. This would reduce costs, take the burden off the districts and reduce this as a bargaining issue. Educators receive 3-4% wage increases with no performance evaluation, and testing shows that just one-third of students are performing at grade level. There has been a slight increase in PSSA testing scores, but all students need to have a quality education to be successful in the workforce of tomorrow. A request was also made by Hampden Township Commissioner Al Bienstock to not push costs down to the local level as the state adheres to its no new taxes policy. When asked about privatization of liquor stores, Zogby reported that the Governor does not feel this is a business the state should be in. Also, there is a new Office of Innovation which will focus on bringing state government offices together for cost savings, but this needs to be institutionalized into the full state government. When questioned about transportation funding’s place in this budget, Zogby noted that in his opinion, this is not the time. Gas prices are expected to exceed $4.00 per gallon and businesses and families cannot afford the additional cost of transportation funding at this time. Secretary Zogby reported to the group that the challenge facing the state is trying to close large budget deficits without an increase in taxes. Zogby explained that pensions, public welfare, prisons and public safety and a debt service of $1.2 billion are four mandated areas of the budget. He noted that revenue projects are better than the $5 million that was projected in December, which means the State may be in a position to add funding back to the budget and that he absolutely believes the budget will be approved on time.
