Faith & Values 6B Thursday, August 28, 2014 KEVIN BAKER’S VIEW How to be a second-mile Christian at work T he Bible says in Matthew 5:41, “And whosoever shall compel you to go a mile, go with him two.” Last week we talked about how a husband and wife should be a second-mile Christian at home. This week I’m going to discuss how the Bible says to be a second-mile Christian on the job. Do you know that God has a job just for you? It doesn’t matter how much money you make. What matters most is you doing God’s will on the job. It is very important to have the right job. If you spend 6-10 hours a day, 4-6 days a week at a place of employment, you better make sure it’s the place where God want’s you. The Bible commands every Christian not to work for the boss, but to work for Jesus. If you are saved, you are commanded by God to give your all. If you are self-employed, you don’t work for yourself. You work for Jesus Christ. How do we know this? The Bible says in Colossians 3:22-23, “Servants, obey in all things your Kevin masters according to baker the flesh; not with eyeservice, as menpleasers; but in singleness of heart, fearing God. And whatsoever ye do, do it heartily as to the Lord, and not unto men.” When was the last time you laid your head on your pillow at night and said to yourself, “I gave my all to the Lord today?” Every day when you go to work, you should let people know how much Jesus means to you by the way you work, then take it a second mile. You should give everything you have. If you are getting paid to work eight hours, this means you work a full eight hours, then second-mile it. When the boss leaves to go on vacation, do you relax and do nothing or do you still work as if he is still there at the job? Would anybody want your Jesus based on how you work on the job? There was a day and time when unsaved people wanted to hire Christians because they knew they were such great workers. Now, Christians won’t even hire other Christians because they think they have a pass on working. We live in a lazy world today. People want everything given to them. The Bible says in 2 Thessalonians 3:10, “For even When it comes to work, Christians should be responsible. We should make the most of our talent and time. when we were with you, this we commanded you, that if any would not work, neither should he eat.” When it comes to work, Christians should be responsible. We should make the most of our talent and time, doing all we can to provide for ourselves and our family. Rest when you should be resting and work when you should be working. Starting this week, do your best on the job. Work for Jesus and you will be greatly rewarded. Next week, I’ll be talking about how to be a second-mile Christian towards others. May God richly bless you this week in all you say and do. (Kevin Baker is a chaplain at the Allendale County Detention Center and appears on WBHC 92.1 every Sunday.
