If you have noticed the stained glass windows are back in place and they have been covered with a protective sealant. The church has been power washed, painted, and is beginning to look like new. The masonry has also been repaired. The last step is the belfry. The diocese has given us approval to continue with the final part of the project. As noted in a previous pastor’s corner, my visit to the top of the steeple confirmed what the contractor had told us. There are portions of the roof that need attention because of excessive warp, splitting, or dry rot. They will replace those shingles. The current screens will be replaced with wooden louvers and they will inspect and remove all rotten wood trim. Last, but certainly not least, the crosses will be replaced. In short, our beautiful church will once again be the “city shining on a hill”…a landmark that reminds all traveling through town about the importance of faith and belief in God. We are blessed to have such a beautiful church and blessed to have the financial resources to pay for the project. You and I both eagerly await the day the crosses stand tall on the front and back of the church. I suppose it means another trip up the lift! This coming Friday is the feast of St. Vincent de Paul. In seminary this was always a big feast where the seminarians would go to dinner the Daughters of Charity at their motherhouse in Emmitsburg, MD. Emmitsburg was the home of America’s first saint: Saint Elizabeth Seton. The daughters of charity continue Mother Seton’s work in healthcare and education throughout the country. St. Vincent co-founded the daughters of charity with St. Louise de Marrilac. Canonized in 1737, St. Vincent is the patron of charitable societies. As you know, we have a St. Vincent de Paul soup kitchen in Middletown. Our parish has been very generous in supporting them as well as our local Food Bank and the Amazing Grace food pantry. Our Responsorial Psalm states…. “Praise the Lord who lifts up the poor.” St. Vincent’s conversion came from hearing a confession of a poor person. It opened his eyes to the lack of catechesis among the poor. Inspired, he founded a new religious congregation called the Congregation of the Mission. Just as Pope Francis is reminding the world about our collective responsibility to the poor, so too, St. Vincent de Paul dedicated his life to acts of charity, organizing groups to provide food and clothing for all who were poor: orphans, prostitutes, the sick, the disabled, and the homeless. We would all do well to follow his example. It is the call of the gospel. September 22, 2013 Parish Events St. Patrick Library is located in the workroom of the Parish Center. All are welcome! "I think the place where good marriages break down is when one or both parties begin to take the other person for granted. And yet it's understandable that this happens. Life is complicated and can be exhausting, so there is always a temptation when you get home to just tune out, because home is one place where you should feel safe enough to let your guard down this way. But there's a difference between relaxing and disengaging, and while relaxing is a healthy way to recharge your psychic and spiritual batteries, disengaging is a drain on you and your relationships. Nothing is more important than that you recognize the difference and stay present for all the people you love." ~From the book Falling in Love for Life by Barbara Cooper ATTENTION FAITH FORMATION STUDENTS 5th thru 12th Grade Sign up to play in the Norwich Diocese CYO Basketball League REGISTRATION INFORMATION: WHEN: Saturday September 28th (this time ONLY) TIME: 9:00 AM – 3:00 PM WHERE: St. Patrick Church Parish Center FEE: $85.00 BRING: Your Child for Uniform Fitting & Birth Certificate if your child is a new player. September 22, 2013 Introduction-Liturgy of the Word: With all the media coverage of finances and markets and money, the last thing most of us might want to hear in church is more money talk. Yet that is what our God has invited us here for today. As you might expect, Jesus has some interesting things to say. In particular, he encourages us to use our wealth and resources for the benefit of others. So perhaps our prayer today can be for the humility to recognize that what we have is not ours but God’s, and for the grace to be able to share it with our sisters and brothers. 25th Sunday in Ordinary READINGS FOR THE WEEK Monday: Ezr 1:106, Lk 8:16-18, Ps 126:3 Tuesday: Ezr 6:7-8, 12b, 14-20, Lk 8:19-21, Ps 122:1 Wed: Ezr 9:5-9, Lk 9:1-6, Tobit 13:1b Thursday: Hz 1:1-8, Lk 9:7-9, Ps 149:4a Friday: Hg 2:1-9, Lk 9:18-22, Ps 43:5 Saturday: Zec 2:5-9, 14-15, Lk 9:43b-45, Ps Sunday: Am 6:1a, 4-7, 1Tm 6:11-16, Lk 16:19-31 Ps 146:7-10 Apostolate of Prayer for Priests….Norwich Sept 21: Andrew Ennen 2003, Fr. Body fat includes essential body fat and storage body fat. The percentage of essential body fat for women is greater than that for men, due to the demands of childbearing and other hormonal functions. Your body fat percentage is a measure of fitness level, and can be calculated at http://www.healthstatus.com/calculate/body-fatpercentage-calculator. ROSARY FOR LIFE Please join us in praying the Rosary for pro-life every Monday evening at 7:00pm in the church. (BMI) also provides a measure that allows the comparison of the adiposity (fat) of individuals. It compares your height to your weight and gives you an indication of whether you are overweight, underweight or at a healthy weight for your height. To calculate your BMI: - Take your height in inches and multiply that number by the same number - Divide your weight in pounds by this figure - Take this number and multiply it by 703 and this new number is your BMI. Example: Height 5'6" tall, so 66 inches. 66 x 66 = 4356 Weight = 160 lbs. Divide 160 by 4356 = 0.04 Multiply 0.04 x 703 = 28 This person has a BMI of 28 BMI Categories: Underweight = <18.5 Normal weight = 18.5-24.9 Overweight = 25-29.9 Obesity = 30 or greater More information can be found at www.nhlbisupport.com/ bmi/, www.cdc.gov/ healthyweight/assessing/ bmi/ OR www.webmd.com OPEN HOUSE Mercy High School will hold its open house on Sunday, November 3rd at 1:00pm.
