 First Reading: There is an important contrast in the
readings today, between human justice, so much based
on revenge and retribution, and the justice of God,
which so often seems gratuitous and merciful. Isaiah
speaks the words of the Lord to those who accuse God
of ‘giving in’ by forgiving the wicked man who turns back
to God. God, Isaiah reminds us, is rich in forgiving, and
as far away from the human point of view as possible.
This is a simple, but deep reading: there are two main
sections: first the call to the wicked man to change his
ways, with the assurance that he will be forgiven: this
can be read with a sense of pleading or appeal.

 Gospel: Using a parable, Jesus got the Jewish leaders
Saturday, October 18
5:00 pm For The People
to admit their error. He described a vineyard owner
(God) who sent slaves (prophets) to collect his share of
the harvest from the tenants (Jewish leaders). But the
tenants killed the slaves. The landowner sent more
slaves, but the tenants killed them, too. Finally the
owner sent his son (Jesus). Of course, they killed the
son. Jesus summarized his point by telling the chief
priests and elders that what they had rejected (their
place in the kingdom) would now be given to the
Gentiles.
God has given us a great harvest in our children. The
harvest may not be perfect or a bumper crop in all ways,
but nevertheless, the harvest is a precious gift from God.
Like the greedy tenants, there are things in our lives
that would take us away from our responsibilities to our
children. What are the things we give in to and how
have we justified their interference? Perhaps it is our
job. Of course, we need to support our families, but is
our lifestyle worth a trade-off in the amount of time we
spend with our children? Do our friends, hobbies,
ambitions sometimes get in the way of family time?
Today’s gospel challenges us to appreciate the fruits of
our harvest.

"It is interesting and important to note that the
habits that diminish us can be acquired with
virtually no effort and are usually the result of
acting without any real thought, while the habits
that allow us to celebrate and defend the best
version of ourselves require real effort and
openness to God. These habits could include
eating foods that respect and fuel the body --being patient with people when they frustrate
you, and making time for prayer and reflection
each day. The good news is we can change our
habits."

the asking, may be comforting to someone limited
in activity or going through a difficult time.
