July & August 2014
As Trustees of this beloved institution, we have an
obligation to be fiscally responsible to all Southold and
Peconic taxpayers. We are taxpayers too, and we do our
best keep a tight budget, while offering the services you
want and need.
Our Library Director, Caroline MacArthur, does an outstanding job year after year finding ways to save, helping us to keep below our mandated 2% (this year 1.4%)
tax cap, while maintaining all the wonderful services our
Library has to offer.
In light of our fiscal responsibility to you, the taxpayer,
our patron, neighbor and friend, I have some news I
would like to share with you.
In 2006, the Board of Trustees purchased the property
east of the Library at 810 Traveler Street. The purpose
was to create a contiguous property running from Main
Road to Traveler Street. This property was purchased
with the future in mind; to enable the space for the
Library to expand, provide adequate parking and easy,
broader access to Traveler Street.
We heard you in 2010, when the bond vote for the
expansion of the Library did not pass. Many people we
spoke with let us know that they thought it was too big,
or didn’t like the design. Should we propose a more
modest expansion to the Library in the future, we have
realized that we do not need all the property at 810
Traveler Street. And so, last year we changed the lot
lines to take a small piece of the property; still allowing
for access to Traveler Street while leaving the property
large enough to stand on its own. That property is on
the market. Should you have any questions please
feel free to contact me or Caroline. We’d be happy to
discuss it with you.

Sea Chanties, Songs of the Sailors
With Timothy Fitall & Dan Skabeikis
Friday, July 11
7pm
A sea chantey was a song designed to keep the rhythm of
certain work being done on the ship. During long voyages
lasting months, sea chanties were also a means of entertainment. They were often humorous and many of the songs
had the same themes-a lot of drinking and hard labor. Join
us as we go back in time to a different way of life. Sponsored by the Friends of the Southold Free Library.
