Principal’s Report:
World Teachers Day: This week we celebrate with our teachers to acknowledge the great work that they do in our
school. It is a time when we can express our gratitude to the teachers at Torquay College. Teachers’ Day provides a
great opportunity for students and the school community to recognise the highly committed teachers we have at our
school. Thanks all teachers at Torquay College.
Planning for 2015: As we will be providing year level classes, students will be allocated to their new class with nominated friends. Teachers spend many hours placing students with the most suitable class cohort that will support their
learning. Please do not contact your child’s teacher or the team leaders with a request for your child to be placed
with a specific teacher in 2015. If you wish to communicate any considerations for placing your child in the next year
level, please send it to me in writing.
Student numbers 2015:
If your child is not attending Torquay College next year and you have not yet us know, please
advise the office as soon as possible in order to finalise student numbers and staffing for 2015.
Lost Property: Please note that I have 30 + school tops without names that we need to wash
for the recycle cupboard. We need 2 volunteers to wash Torquay College school uniform for
the second hand cupboard. Please contact the office if you can help.

Assistant Principal’s Report:
Dear School Community Members,
Great news! Last week we were notified that we had been successful in gaining a grant under the Bully Stoppers program. The Bully Stoppers program is a Victorian Government initiative to develop practical information and strategies
to stop bullying in schools. Recipients, like Torquay College, have received these grants to continue developing their
own bullying prevention strategies and to support other schools.
The grant will enable Torquay College to continue its Bucket Filling philosophy, purchase resources and provide professional development for staff in this area. The provision of this grant will allow students and staff at Torquay College
to continue the positive work being done in reducing bullying behaviours in our school.
World Teachers Day – Invest in the future, Invest in Teachers
Last week was World Teachers Day and it is a time when we can express our gratitude to the teachers at Torquay
College. Teachers are among the most important people in the lives of young people and within our community. World
Teachers’ Day provides a great opportunity for students and the school community to recognise the highly committed
teachers we have at our school.
Education is complex and constantly changing, and teachers are increasingly called upon to step up and manage
issues the community places upon them – fitness, nutrition, drug education, bullying behaviour, road safety, bike safety, water safety, child protection, environmental education, sex education and the list goes on. Simultaneously teachers deliver curriculum involving 16 domains. We understand most occupations continually have more and more
expected of them, and for this reason, teachers are expected to provide our students with the skills, strategies and
knowledge for their future. A significant task considering our complex and ever changing world.
It is important that we express our appreciation to our teachers here at Torquay College. Teachers are some of the
most important and influential people within our community and we encourage you, as a family, to recognise and
acknowledge your child/s teacher.
Uniform - Sunsmart Hats for Term 4
Congratulations to those students who have their Torquay College sunsmart hat at school this week. A reminder to
parents that all students will need to wear their sunsmart hat throughout term four (and term one) during outside activities. This is part of the ‘Uniform’ and ‘Sun Smart’ policies. Students will be required to play in a designated shaded
area if they don’t have their sunsmart hat.
Thank you for supporting our school and have a great week.
Kind regards, Christian Smith and Nadia Tkaczuk
Mini Activities Day
The Senior Learning Community has been buzzing with excitement about MAD
Day, with enthusiastic preparations under way for Tuesday 21st October.
This year, we are emphasising hands-on activities, with less dependency on
commercial products, encouraging students to develop their creativity and show
innovation.
Our aim is to empower students as independent learners and contributors to our
school community, while also raising valuable funds. For example, the proceeds
from previous year’s fundraising has been put to good to use in subsidising the
construction of our gaga game pit – a Junior School Council initiative.
Parents are urged to discuss the day with your children and encourage them to perform extra tasks at home in order
‘earn’ silver coins for the day.
Please note that students will be able to attend school in casual clothing.
If children would like to participate in ‘wet’ activities, it may be worthwhile providing a change of clothes.
We would also like to take this opportunity to thank our school community for the overwhelming level of support we
receive both on the day and in the lead up. Feel free to come up and check out the students in action on the day!
Kind regards, Senior Learning Team

EMA
Walk to School is an annual event which has
been funded by VicHealth since 2006.
The event is designed to raise awareness of
the physical, environmental and social benefits
of walking to school, by encouraging school
children to walk to and from school more often.
Walk to School encourages Victorian primary
school students and their families to walk to
and from school during month of October,
building healthy habits for life.
Children and their parents are encouraged to start walking to and
from school for the month of October.
Torquay College will have a special promotion day on Friday 24th
October, encouraging healthy life styles and children to walk, ride,
skate or scooter to school. Children can participate, even if not
travelling all the way from home to school eg Children can walk,
ride, skate or scooter from the traffic lights at Surf Coast Highway /
Darian Road to Torquay College (approx. 500 metres).
Join in for a fun day.
The Education Maintenance Allowance ceases at the end of 2014 and
will not be available to students or families in 2015.
In the 2013 School Reform agreement signed with the Commonwealth,
the Victorian Government committed to change the way it helps low income families with education expenses. The EMA program will cease at
the end of 2014.
From 2015 funds previously used for the EMA will be distributed directly
to means-tested schools across the state using a formula based on the
needs of the student population.
We do not anticipate Torquay College receiving any EMA funds.

Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden Update
An enthusiastic F2 got out in the garden today in spite of the unseasonal cold wind, and planted cucumbers, tomatoes, chillies and basil. They
also achieved a lot of garden building tasks, including on working on a
new straw bale bed in the vineyard, and temporary wind breaks for fruit
trees near the oval.
Here’s the yummy spring rolls recipe for you to try at home.
We’re still making lemon butter, so any donations of lemons would be
much appreciated. We’re also after some very large pots for the veggie
gardens.
Anyone keen to help us out in the garden is most
welcome on Friday morning or next Tuesday, when
there will be no class as the students will be busy at
MAD day.
Thanks everyone for all your support.
