Principal’s Report:
Welcome back to our final term in 2014: We welcome many new families into our school community again this
term. We hope that you all get a chance to meet them as they settle into Torquay. We welcome Ms Rebecca Rau to
teach B10 this term and hope that she also enjoys being part of our school community. Term four is always a very
busy term and culminates in a celebration of the great academic year had by your children. Each teaching team has
planned an excellent curriculum to support learning for all students.
Safe and happy playgrounds: Our school aims to make our school a great place for all students and consequently
we place a great emphasis on yard supervision and extra curricula activities at recess breaks. We have up to eight
teachers supervising at any given time, plus there are a large range of lunchtime activities for your child to select.
Teachers wear orange vests to be easily identified in the yard and always respond to children who have any social
issues or rough play experiences.
China trip: Well done Miss Nadia, Ms Helene and students on representing our school so well in China. It was an
amazing experience for the whole delegation and they will enjoy sharing the highlights with students across the
school.
Term four reminders: Please ensure that your children attend every day and have their broad brimmed school hat.
No child will be permitted to play outside in the sun or participate in PE classes unless they are wearing their hat. It is
vital that all hats are very clearly labelled to enable them to be identified if lost. NO hat, NO play!
P-2 Concert: Please keep Monday October 27th free to attend our P-2 concert at 2-3pm. The students are excited
about performances that they are currently rehearsing. Thanks Ms Helene and Mr Reid.
2015 Planning: We have appointed three new teachers in readiness for next year. We will welcome Ms Chelsea
James, Mr Darcy Hansen and Ms Aimee Lynch. Congratulations on their appointment from a very large field of
excellent applicants.

Walk to School

Walk to School is an annual event which has been funded by VicHealth since 2006.

The event is designed to raise awareness of the physical, environmental and social benefits of walking to school, by encouraging school children to walk to and from school more often.

Walk to School encourages Victorian primary school students and their families to walk to and from
school during month of October, building healthy habits for life.

Children and their parents are encouraged to start walking to and from school for the month of October.

Torquay College will have a special promotion day on Friday 24th October, encouraging healthy life
styles and children to walk, ride, skate or scooter to school. Children can participate, even if not travelling all the way
from home to school eg Children can walk, ride, skate or scooter from the traffic lights at Surf Coast Highway / Darian
Road to Torquay College (approx. 500 metres). Join in for a fun day.
EMA
The Education Maintenance Allowance ceases at the end of 2014 and will not be available to students or families in 2015.
In the 2013 School Reform agreement signed with the Commonwealth, the Victorian Government committed to change the way
it helps low income families with education expenses. The EMA program will cease at the end of 2014.
From 2015 funds previously used for the EMA will be distributed directly to means-tested schools across the state using a formula based on the needs of the student population. We do not anticipate Torquay College receiving any EMA funds.
Special Recognition:
Congratulations to Desley (in the Canteen) on receiving a Silver Wattle Award for services beyond the call of duty to
the Scouting movement. Well done Desley, we appreciate your efforts.

Library News:
Local History Corner in our Library.
Parents are most welcome to come into the library to see our new Local
History Corner.
This was a Rotary Club funded project facilitated by Bev Berryman, who
collated large volumes of local history relating to our school. Anyone who
grew up in Torquay, or whose parents or grandparents did, will find it very
interesting. Lots of old school photos and other local history articles. If you
have any historical material which could be added to this collection, please
see Kathy or Lesley in the Library or Carol in the main office.
Clare Saxby - Children's Author coming to Torquay Library on 23rd October.
Details below.
Happy Reading! Kathy and Lesley.
