If Jesus had said that one should not pay the Roman tax, then the leaders of the people could go the Roman governor and accuse Jesus of treason. If he says people should pay the tax, then they could go and tell the people he was not a true Israelite since he said people should pay the tax to the hated Roman conquerors. However, many think that Jesus is setting up a dichotomy here, that we can look at things and determine whether they belong to Caesar or to God. If we determine Caesar, then we might think we have no obligation toward those things that involve God or Christ or our faith. In such determinations, our human weakness would tend toward deciding that little was for God and most for Caesar, which is another way saying, for ourselves. The Book of Genesis says that God created all things. God did not separate creation saying, “This for me, but this for someone else.” Everything was created by God and belongs to him. When Jesus says to give to Caesar what belongs to Caesar and to God what belongs to God, he hopes the people understand the truth that everything belongs to God, even Caesar’s part. What we use to render to Caesar first comes to us from God as his gift to us. A job, employment, a family, the things we can purchase and obtain through wages we earn, these are all from God, who gives us all good things. At Christmas, some families have the tradition of offering a prayer to God thanking him for the gifts they are about to open. The prayer also helps call to mind, for those present, that the greatest gifts of all comes from God: our Lord Jesus and salvation. It is easy to look at the various things in our lives and realize that, ultimately come from God. One would hope that we would treat what come from God, and what we render back to him, with goodness and kindness. So we are called, knowing that all things belong to God, to treat everything with the love, respect and dignity he gave them when he created all things. Above all, we have the important duty to apply this approach to the high point of God’s creation: people. Sincerely in Christ, Father John C. Moloney PLEASE REMEMBER THE CATHOLIC CHARITIES APPEAL FOR 2014. Over the last few years the Archdiocese has encouraged parishes throughout the five county area to unite and participate in a self-study (Pastoral Planning Process or PPA). The purpose of the study is to evaluate parishes and suggest how we could better: 1) Meet the spiritual needs of the people. 2) Improve financial sustainability, pastoral services and vibrancy. Our Pastoral Planning area (#330), which includes St. Francis, Holy Cross and St. Kevin, is involved and beginning the process now. Since the best way to begin the process is in prayer, we have scheduled a Mass on Monday, Oct. 20, 7 pm at St. Francis. St. Francis was selected because it is the older established parish of the three. Regional Bishop John J. McIntyre will be the principal celebrant. Members of the three parishes are invited and encouraged to participate. There will be a modest social after the Mass. Let us ask the Holy Spirit to renew and unite us in mutual respect, in being realistic and honest, open and positive. May our words and actions be influenced by the Christian virtues of faith, hope and love. 066kevin – 101914 pg2 SAINT KEVIN HAPPENINGS 10/20 – 10/24/14 – Springfield Hospital Communion Distribution 9am 10/20/14 – Yoga Class 7pm first floor of the school bldg. To sign up or learn more visit www.stkevin.com "THE RITE OF CHRISTIAN INITIATION OF ADULTS” (RCIA) is the process through which interested adults are gradually introduced to the Roman Catholic faith and way of life. For those who join an RCIA process it is a period of reflection, prayer, instruction, discernment, and formation. There is no set timetable and those who join the process are encouraged to go at their own pace; however, on average the process starts in the fall and concludes at the Easter Triduum. Any person interested in the RCIA program should contact the rectory office (610-5448777). CHILDREN’S LITURGY OF THE WORD- Volunteers are needed to be leaders of the Children’s Liturgy of the Word. This is a short prayer service which takes place during Sunday Masses (9:30 and 11 am). We read the Sunday reading in language that is understandable on a child’s level and then discuss the readings to focus on their meeting. Children return to Mass for Liturgy of the Eucharist. Please contact Maureen LeFevre (610909-2845) or maureen426@yahoo.com, if you have any questions. Training to prepare you for this ministry will be provided. We thank all those who have given and ask those who have not yet given to reflect on those individuals who are the most hungry, ill, and vulnerable among us, and prayerfully consider how you can help them by giving to the 2014 Catholic Charities Appeal. Dear St. Kevin Family, I hope your fall season is going well and not too busy! It is amazing how much the roads become more and more congested this time of year—and it only gets worse as the (dare I say) Christmas season approaches! It will be here before we know it. I would like to remind everyone that our Sunday night 5:30pm Mass has returned as well as youth group which immediately follows Mass. All 5th - 8th graders are welcome to come and join. Parents, please encourage your children to give it a try. I promise they will not be disappointed! It is already that time of year where I request for help for our Christmas Tree Lighting. I am in need of anywhere between four and six key team members that can help coordinate the decorating for this year. With the nasty winter we had over the past year, many of the lights need to be taken down and replaced. Please consider volunteering for this great tradition at St. Kevin. Thank you for your constant service and commitment to our parish. If there is ever anything that I can do to be of assistance, please let me know. Peace and Harmony, Jeffrey P. The Parish Nurse Ministry welcomes any nurse in the parish to join our small group. It will only require a small amount of your time. We also need a substitute nurse for Sunday blood pressure monitoring. If you are interested please call Maureen LeFevre at 610-544-4137. ST. EUGENE BINGO - Thursday 10/30 Doors open at 4:30pm. PRO LIFE CORNER 40 Days for Life by Shawn Carney Abortion brings darkness to a community ... a darkness that needs our silence in order to survive. It brings death to the innocent. It also brings emotional, spiritual ... even physical suffering. In 297 cities right now, volunteers are shining a light into that darkness through their prayers and presence. We know from the gospel that “the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it” (John 1:5). We cannot ignore this darkness in our communities. We must trust the light of Christ to penetrate the darkest corners of our culture. Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania It was a somber scene outside the abortion center in Pittsburgh as an ambulance pulled up … and medical teams were called inside. “This is the third time I have personally seen a woman taken out by stretcher during a 40 Days for Life vigil,” said Nikki, the local leader. “We prayed for her. She was alert and her face was tear-stained as she was carried out. Abortion is devastating.” Please keep this in mind the next time you’re told that abortion is “safe and legal.” Manassas, Virginia “We are having a great impact on the abortion clinic,” said Mike, the local 40 Days for Life coordinator in Manassas. “Last Saturday, no abortionist showed up. This is extremely rare for a Saturday. For those who were there, it was very rewarding to witness an empty parking lot.” Mike said that in addition to prayer, a great resource for saving babies is close at hand – a pregnancy help center with counselors, who “day in and day out, try to talk to each woman as they approach the abortion clinic, offering them all the help they need.” It's a tough job that takes tough skin and a big caring heart, he said. “But the rewards are eternal.” Step out of your comfort zone and please consider joining with St. Kevin parishioners for the 40 Days for Life vigil on Sunday October 26, 2014 at Planned Parenthood, 8 S. Wayne St, West Chester. Groups will leave from the parish parking lot at 1:15 and 2:15 pm. ”All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing."
