Tuition & Notary Public Mrs. Sandy Zaleski, ext. 404 Psalm 18 My Dear People, The next two Sundays our regular Sunday celebration will be replaced by special observances in the Church: All Souls Day and The dedication of the cathedral church of Rome, St. John Lateran. The former is a somewhat somber occasion when we pray for our beloved deceased and consider the mysteries of death, judgment, and eternity. The latter celebration invites us to celebrate our unity with the Universal Church represented by the Holy Father and the See of Rome. On the 9th we will open our annual Forty Hours Devotion with a special multi-lingual Mass at 11:00 am. Elsewhere you will find the complete schedule of services but at this time I want to call your attention to something we did last year for the first time, having all night adoration. To do this we will need at least two people to commit to each of the daytime and night hours from Sunday through to Tuesday evening when we will celebrate our parish Patronal Feast. Please consider signing up in the vestibule nearest the parking lot this weekend and next so that we can have full coverage for this special Eucharistic Retreat. GUSTAVO CORDOVA MARLY EVANS ANA GARCIA SHANNON MULHERN ANGELA VINAS NANCY WAL 162—St. Martin of Tours 4 OUR FIRST GRADERS LEARN FIRE PREVENTION Fire Prevention Week was established to commemorate the Great Chicago Fire, the tragic 1871 conflagration that began on October 8, but continued into and did most of its damage on October 9, 1871. On the 40th anniversary of the Great Chicago Fire, the Fire Marshals Association of North America (today known as the International Fire Marshals Association), decided that the anniversary of this tragic event should henceforth be observed not with festivities, but in a way that would keep the public informed about the importance of fire prevention. The commemoration grew incrementally official over the years. Since 1920, Fire Prevention Week has been observed on the Sunday through Saturday period in which October 9 falls. Our First Graders had an up-close opportunity to learn about Fire Prevention when Mr. Iannarelli (father of one of our teachers) visited their classrooms and showed the children some of the gear he uses as a volunteer firefighter. He also read them a story that explained exactly what the children should do in the event of a fire. His most important message was to encourage the students to share with their families the need for a family-escape plan in case there was a fire in their home. Of course, they also talked about smoke detectors and not playing with matches or lighters. The children enjoyed the visit and will, hopefully, remember all that Mr. I told them! All parishioners, present and former students and their families are invited to attend a Memorial Mass for the repose of the soul of Sister James Grace on Wednesday evening, 7:00 pm in our parish church. Sister Grace spent 12 years here at St. Martin of Tours, teaching first grade and also working in the Learning Support Program. She was quite visible in the parish, joining in on the many activities held during those years. She died on July 6th after a two-year battle with cancer; her funeral Mass and burial were at Immaculata…a distance for many to travel to early in the morning. The Sisters of SMT thought this Mass would give everyone an opportunity to join together to pray for and share memories of Sister Grace. Memorial cards will be available after Mass. We hope you will be able to be there! The Catholic TV Network, America’s Catholic Television Network, is now available to cable and satellite providers in our area.
