DESERONTO FIRE DEPARTMENT The Town of Deseronto Volunteer Fire Department is currently accepting applications for Volunteer Firefighter Trainees. This position is for individuals who are interested in becoming members of the Deseronto Volunteer Fire Department. Applications are available for pickup at Deseronto Town Hall, Mon to Fri 8:30a.m. to 4:30p.m. or online at www.deseronto.ca. A job description and program outline are attached to the application. The cost is $25/animal HST included. Dogs must be on a leash and cats should be in carriers. Offered in partnership by the Hastings & Prince Edward Counties Health Unit and Quinte District Veterinary Association. TAX BILL REMINDER The 2014 final property tax instalment due date has now past. Any outstanding tax payments are now past due and subject to monthly penalties. Failure to receive your tax notice does not relieve you from incurring penalty charges for late payment. OPP CITIZEN SELFREPORTING PORTAL Victims of property damage and petty thefts can now report their troubles online to the Ontario Provincial Police through its new "Citizen Self-Reporting Portal." This system allows you to submit a report from your computer without going to an OPP detachment. All submissions will be reviewed by an officer, and you may be contacted to provide more information. You must have a valid e-mail address in order to submit a report. The OPP recommends that citizens utilize this system to report the following incidents: • Lost/missing property under $5,000 • Lost/stolen license plates or validation stickers • • • • Theft from a vehicle under $5,000 Mischief/damage to a vehicle under $5,000 Mischief/damage to property (other than a vehicle) under $5,000 Theft under $5,000 COMMUNITY CARE FOR SOUTH HASTINGS (CCSH) CCSH provides vital services to seniors and to adults with physical disabilities allowing them to remain in their homes with dignity and respect in Deseronto and Tyendinaga Township. All of the programs and services we offer could not run without the dedication of all our hard working volunteers. One of our fundraising programs, the Thrift Store, always needs help to sort the amazing donations we receive and to keep our shop running smoothly. The Thrift Store is open Tues.-Sat. We have two working shifts each day 10:00am – 1:00pm and 1:00pm – 4:00pm. If you are interested in recycling and repurposing clothing and household items or just lending a hand, this is the opportunity for you! Do you have a donation for us? Please drop off all donations to the Community Care for South Hastings office at 331 Edmon St. between 9am-4pm. We have received a lot of amazing items that have gone to benefit the community through our little store. Clothing, books, knickknacks, puzzles, sheets and blankets always can always be re-homed very easily. Please do not drop off large items like couches, chairs, any electronics, computer parts or monitors, TV’s, old luggage pieces, broken electronics or yard sale items. Please also keep in mind that torn, ripped, stained, broken and frayed items will just end up in the landfill at our cost. To help us cover the cost of disposal fees we would gladly accept donations of garbage bag tags, or the money to help purchase them. His father was the Presbyterian minister of Deseronto between 1895 and 1905 and Ross attended both Deseronto Public School and Deseronto High School. News & Views Sept - Oct 2014 6 He studied at Queen’s University, getting his Bachelor of Arts degree in 1907 and a Bachelor of Divinity degree in 1913. He had obtained a travelling scholarship and was in England at the outbreak of World War I on August 4th, 1914. On August 26th he enlisted as a trooper in the 2nd King Edward’s Horse regiment. MacTavish obtained a commission as a second lieutenant in the 2nd Battalion of the South Staffordshire Regiment on March 13th, 1915. MacTavish was the first person with a Deseronto connection to join the armed forces in the First World War. He rose to the rank of Captain and was awarded the Military Cross on January 1, 1919. MacTavish continued to serve in France after the war, working at the headquarters of the 6th Infantry Brigade. However, he died of influenza in the No. 3 Canadian Stationary Hospital at Arques on February 6, 1919 and was buried in the Longuenesse Souvenir Cemetery, Saint-Omer. Ross MacTavish’s younger brother, Wilfrid, named his son (who was born in Saskatchewan in 1919) Roswell Murray, in memory of his uncle. The younger Roswell Murray MacTavish joined the Royal Canadian Air Force during the Second World War as a flying officer and was killed when his Hurricane aircraft crashed in Scotland on March 18th, 1944. He was buried in Ayr cemetery. DESERONTO HELPING HANDS FOOD BANK Thank you to all those people living in our area who have been donating to our food bank.
