An Introduction to understanding and using Social Media What comes to mind when I say “Social Media?” A Few Stats… Over 1.2 Billion YouTube videos viewed per day 20 hours of video uploaded to YouTube every minute 13,000,000+ articles available on Wikipedia 50 million Tweets per day, 600 Tweets per second 8 billion minutes spent on Facebook daily 2 billion pieces of content (web links, news stories, blog posts, notes, photos, etc.) are shared each week on Facebook Over 4 billion images hosted on Flickr Social Media is all about… Listening and/or Being Heard Adapting & Open to change To best leverage Social Media tools to promote, attract, and grow a brand you need to keep this model/flow in mind. Source: Future Workplace Preferences • High comfort with technology • On the web since they could write their name • Bite size, fast, immediate answers • Disengaged if spoon fed • Social learning with peers/coaches/mentors • Expect/require workplace to have social network Why is this important? o There are now more mobile devices in the world than people. o By 2014, almost 50% of the workforce will be Millennials. o 70% trust online peer reviews; Only 14% trust traditional advertisements. GSM Association: New York Times, Guardian, Brand Infiltration and Did You Know 4.0, ASTD, i4cp. o How we engage, connect, and leverage Social Media can have an impact on: o How we best attract and retain o How we share and promote o How we best engage Social Media in 140 characters or less… People all over the world are having conversations online via a variety of platforms. These conversations aren’t just about what I did today the are about: o o o o o o Their experiences Reviewing products or services Generating new ideas Building on other’s ideas The communities and organizations they belong to And more… How are YOU engaged? Q: How does your club use social media technologies? Facebook Search for people, groups, and pages. Connect with like causes, organization, and businesses. Post your own update, comment, event, question, or idea! Link to articles, a website, an event page, etc. Create curiosity – make them connect. News Feed great for scanning for quick, bite size chunks of information. Look for ways you can connect with others. Like things, Share posts, Comment, etc. • Create a club, business, or cause Page or Group. Invite friends, post pictures, videos, and more to create curiosity and connectivity. • Create events – people can RSVP and access any documents/files/etc. Make it easy to find the information they need to get involved. • “Like” and “Share” interesting content from others. Creates an instant connection and engagement. It also builds a larger audience. • Follow people of interest! Don’t be afraid to search for people from like organizations, companies, etc. People are on Facebook to connect. • Always tag people, pages, groups, and events in your posts to help build awareness, visibility and an audience. You can do that by using the “@”. Twitter Tap to compose your tweet! Tweets can include text, images, and links to outside content. Twitter Feed – scroll up and down. Tweets can only be 140 characters or less! # is called a Hashtag. Hashtags are used in Twitter to mark keywords phrases or topics. Anyone can create their own Hashtag or search for existing ones. @ Connect – Search for people. Users always have an “@” in front of their name. • Share “bite size” chunks of information in 140 characters or less! Connect your facebook and Twitter. You post on one, it posts to both. • Follow people of interest! There are many high powered people on Twitter. Don’t be afraid to search for people within your industry, Rotary, etc. • Retweet or Share what others have said. Builds connections, your visibility, and creates engagement. • Dialogue with fellow Rotarians, Clubs, Districts, and more! Ask questions, post event ideas, see what other clubs and organizations are doing. • Search for #’s that are relevant to what we’re doing and reach out to those people. Example: #volunteer, #Rotary, #communityservice, #helpingothers. Instagram News Feed – see what your friends (who you’re following) are posting! You can fade/blur the edges! Once you have your image up, you can start editing it! Choose the filter you like best! You can “like” and “Comment” on your friends pictures. Take your own pictures on your mobile device and edit/share them by tapping the camera icon. When you’re done tap the green check mark! Hashtags, like twitter, are used. Tap this icon to search for keywords, topics, and more! • Create an instagram account and begin capturing moments! Rotary meetings, events, work functions, etc. •Instagram allows you to send out edited photos via other social media platforms and you can use their tagging features (“@” and “#”). • Create an Instagram Hashtag feed for an event and share it with everyone you know! #RMRYLA #RotaryDenverEvent • People connect to photos – use them to depict the power of what you’re doing. See Rotary International’s Instagram feed. • Other Social Media technologies/tools: • You Tube • LinkedIn • Pinterest • and many more… • Think of your club or a specific project? • • • • • What are social media channels you would like to explore using? What would you “share” using those social media channels? Who would you involve? Are there other communication/media types you can leverage? How? What other creative ideas do you have around using social media? You’ve just started creating a Social Media Strategy! Example – Rotary is… Campaign! • A simple idea – a simple task • Collect photos of Rotarians sharing their words in a visual way • Share these photos: • Facebook • Flickr • YouTube – video collection • @ Rotary events • Create materials & tools – • Postcards • QR codes • Posters • E-greetings • and more!
