SMS Meer offers individual, effective press solutions for all the customer’s needs. The company’s open-die forging plants and radial forging machines use high forging forces to produce large components such as shafts for marine propulsion systems or power plant turbines. SMS Meer’s powder presses are the right choice for complex precision parts in the automotive industry. To date SMS Meer has sold a total of around 1,500 hydraulic presses worldwide and therefore ranks as one of the market leaders in this sector. OPEN-DIE FORGING: FULL CONTROL – MAXIMUM FORCES Open-die forging machines built by SMS Meer are able to exceed forging forces way above 100 MN, depending on the customer‘s needs. The pass schedules for the forging process are provided by technology systems featuring comprehensive material databases. The control circuits ensure precise coordination of the manipulator movements and forge strokes. SMS Meer machines are designed with the customer such that they meet demanding certification standards, e.g. for power engineering. “X” shape. The main advantage of radial forging machines is that the workpiece is enclosed by four forging dies and is therefore only able to yield axially, thereby avoiding lateral spread. Radial forging machines are particularly suited for bars, shafts, axles and thickwalled tubes. POWDER PRESSES: REDUCED COSTS – FULL QUALITY The cost-efficient manufacture of complex sintered parts of consistently high quality is what powder press owners demand. With its range of hydraulic powder presses, hybrid presses and mechanical presses, SMS Meer has the right solution for almost any application. NEW APPROACH FOR FUTURE TECHNOLOGY Powder presses produce predominantly components for the automotive industry. Not so at Gobal Tungsten & Powders (GTP). For this U.S. based company SMS Meer adapted its press technology to a completely new application in a very short time period. More than 1,400 reference plants worldwide are proof of the company’s experience and comprehensive competence. LIGHT METAL PRESSES: MOST MODERN TECHNOLOGY Light metal extrusion presses from SMS Meer are used to produce sections and tubes from aluminum and aluminum alloys for the automotive and aerospace industry as well as for the construction industry. A special feature is the front loader design further developed by SMS Meer. It is the most modern extrusion technology to date and has established itself all around the world. These modern light metal extrusion presses can also handle high billet charge weights with maximised billet lengths. Indirect extrusion is suitable for producing wire rods, bars and sections from brass and special brass. The heavy metal press technology is used for highly specialised extrusion presses for pressing zirconium, silver or gold alloys as for the extrusion of the light metal titanium. High-allow special steels, too, are made into sections and seamless tubes for applications in the offshore, power plant construction and chemical industries. SMS Meer extrusion presses are perfectly rounded off by self-developed, intelligent control systems with sophisticated man-machine interface, tool management, block reports, production control computer connection as well as practical technology software. That’s what SMS Meer calls customer orientation. 9 HOW TO ACHIEVE 380 KM/H ON THE TRACKS Faster, higher, further: Chinese express trains reach a constant speed of 380 km/h, which is much faster than the competition. Obviously, the wheels have to stand up to enormous strains, so their manufacturers must meet highest standards. To make the grade, wheel manufacturers such as MASTEEL wheel company or Taiyuan Heavy Industry rely on plants from SMS Meer. Just like the producers of the aluminum outer panels: Shandong Nanshan Aluminium manufactures the aluminum long products on extrusion presses from SMS Meer. 10 11 CLOSED-DIE FORGING Highest productivity in top form Weather turbine blades for power stations and aircrafts or connecting rods, knuckles and crank shafts for the automotive industry and commercial vehicles: SMS Meer offers every customer in the field of closed-die forging the right solution. With more than 2,800 machines built it has perhaps the greatest wealth of experience in this field, too. Plant owners benefit from this through considerably reduced investment costs, shorter delivery times and faster commissioning. 12 SCREW PRESSES: HIGH FORMING ENERGY AND PRECISION The screw presses with electrical direct drive or continuously rotating flywheel are noted for their high forming energy and high forging precision. Maximum press forces of up to 355 MN can be achieved with the flywheel design, in particular. SMS Meer‘s screw press concept is also characterised by the shortest pressure dwell times and therefore improved tool service lives. WEDGE PRESSES: IMPROVED LOAD CAPABILITY Wedge presses are designed for longitudinal forged parts. Thanks to the special wedge drive, the off- centre load capability in both the forward and backward direction is also improved. SMS Meer presses can subject several adjacent dies to the full nominal force. APPLICATION AREAS Safety-relevant components for vehicles, aircrafts and machines e. g. crank shafts, connection rods, gear wheels, track rod ends, steering parts, gearing parts, turbine discs and turbine blades. ALWAYS ONE STEP AHEAD The world’s strongest clutch-operated screw press was erected by SMS Meer employees in cooperation with their Chinese customer Wuxi Turbine Blade (WTB) three month ahead of schedule. The new plant stands out for its 35,000 t impact force, a screw diameter of 1,320 mm and a weight of 85 t. It requires 87 % less energy than traditional screw presses. This helps WTB to meet the growing demands of its customers in the aeronautical and power generation industries. “For us the plant has the advantage of being able to meet the growing demands of our customers,” says Yan Qi, Managing Director of WTB. “We have been working together successfully with SMS Meer since 1976.” 13 AUTOMATION FOR BEST QUALITY Turbines, aircrafts or machines – all need bearing steel produced with highest precision. Swedish manufacturer Ovako Tube & Ring is one of the leading companies serving the bearing industry and relying on SMS Meer machines for many years. Ovako‘s new RiWa 2000/80 is the world’s largest fully automatic ring rolling plant in which industrial robots transport and position the workpieces. “The largest types of robots currently available on the market are in use here. We have equipped them with special gripping tongs for the specific application,” says Robert Düser from SMS Meer‘s Business Unit Forging Plants. 14 RING AND WHEEL ROLLING Tailor-made solutions for the ring rolling industry Rings and wheels large and small – these are the pivot points of progress.
