PRESS AND FORGING
COMPETENCE
Making the world go round
Forge and press products make the world go round.
Imagine huge titanium turbine blades for jet engines
or heavy-duty drive and axle components for vehicles.
Consider extruded sections for automotive, aircraft or
railway applications. Or think of massive anti-friction
bearings for wind turbines or precision gears for
motors. None of them can move without SMS Meer
presses and forging machines.
PERFORMANCE UP –
CONSUMPTION DOWN
With its press and forging range SMS Meer provides
customers with both innovative and sophisticated
processes. The maximum press force of the machines
4
is being continuously expanded using new, optimised
technologies. Yet despite the increase in performance
less energy is required.
Plant owners are able to process new materials and
produce new products thanks to the higher forging
forces. They can increase their plant‘s productivity
economically thanks to higher cycle rates. What’s
more, they save themselves costly, labour-intensive
postmachining processes thanks to higher precision
grades such as near-net-shape.
SMS Meer offers fully automated forging machines
and press lines. The comprehensive process and ma-

HYDRAULIC PRESSES
High forces and great precision
Think big. Achieve more. SMS Meer offers individual,
effective press solutions for all the customer’s needs.
The company’s open-die forging plants and radial forging machines use high forging forces to produce large
components such as shafts for marine propulsion systems or power plant turbines. SMS Meer’s powder
presses are the right choice for complex precision
parts in the automotive industry. To date SMS Meer
has sold a total of around 1,500 hydraulic presses
worldwide and therefore ranks as one of the market
leaders in this sector.
OPEN-DIE FORGING:
FULL CONTROL – MAXIMUM FORCES
Open-die forging machines built by SMS Meer are able
to exceed forging forces way above 100 MN, depending on the customer‘s needs. The pass schedules for
the forging process are provided by technology systems
featuring comprehensive material databases. The control circuits ensure precise coordination of the manipulator movements and forge strokes. SMS Meer machines are designed with the customer such that they
meet demanding certification standards, e.g. for power engineering.
“X” shape. The main advantage of radial forging machines is that the workpiece is enclosed by four forging
dies and is therefore only able to yield axially, thereby
avoiding lateral spread. Radial forging machines are
particularly suited for bars, shafts, axles and thickwalled tubes.
POWDER PRESSES:
REDUCED COSTS – FULL QUALITY
The cost-efficient manufacture of complex sintered
parts of consistently high quality is what powder
press owners demand. With its range of hydraulic
powder presses, hybrid presses and mechanical
presses, SMS Meer has the right solution for almost
any application. The company offers its customers a
series of presses of various types and press forces,
with the result that the machine can be individually –
and cost-effectively – configured to meet the customer‘s
respective requirements.

NEW APPROACH FOR
FUTURE TECHNOLOGY
Powder presses produce predominantly components for the automotive industry. Not so at Gobal
Tungsten & Powders (GTP). For this U.S. based company SMS Meer adapted its press technology to
a completely new application in a very short time period. With its HPM 1600E5i GTP manufactures
components for fuel cells. “SMS Meer supports us in developing a new market in the area of Green
Technology. Success in this process requires a combination of technology and efficiency which we
have found with SMS Meer”, says Mike Cuddy, Procurement Manager, GTP.

EXTRUSION PRESSES
Always the right solution –
no matter what material
Schloemann extrusion presses from SMS Meer are
unique worldwide: SMS Meer is the only manufacturer to offer all extrusion processes for all materials and
alloys including all ancillary equipment and automation
systems. More than 1,400 reference plants worldwide
are proof of the company’s experience and comprehensive competence.
LIGHT METAL PRESSES:
MOST MODERN TECHNOLOGY
Light metal extrusion presses from SMS Meer are
used to produce sections and tubes from aluminum
and aluminum alloys for the automotive and aerospace
industry as well as for the construction industry. A
special feature is the front loader design further developed by SMS Meer. It is the most modern extrusion
technology to date and has established itself all
around the world. The benefits are high productivity
and availability as well as excellent sectional quality.
These modern light metal extrusion presses can also
handle high billet charge weights with maximised billet lengths. In addition to direct extrusion presses, indirect extrusion as well as tube extrusion presses are
used for special applications for aluminum alloys.
HEAVY METAL PRESSES:
FOR VARIED PRODUCTS
The heavy metal extrusion presses from SMS Meer
are used for producing sections, bars, strip, wire rod,
tubes and hollow sections from copper and copper
alloys for application in the construction, automotive,
valve and fittings, installation and electrical industries.
The process technologies available here are direct and
indirect extrusion, too. Direct extrusion is the pre-
8
ferred solution where there is a varied product mix
and small batch sizes for copper products. Indirect
extrusion is suitable for producing wire rods, bars
and sections from brass and special brass.
The heavy metal press technology is used for highly
specialised extrusion presses for pressing zirconium,
silver or gold alloys as for the extrusion of the light
metal titanium. High-allow special steels, too, are
made into sections and seamless tubes for applications in the offshore, power plant construction and
chemical industries.
SMS Meer extrusion presses are perfectly rounded
off by self-developed, intelligent control systems with
sophisticated man-machine interface, tool management,
block reports, production control computer connection
as well as practical technology software.

THOUROUGHLY
CUSTOMER-ORIENTED
Supplying, erecting and commissioning complex plants reliably – that’s SMS Meer’s
business. But the company does also comply with exceptional requests: For its Chinese
customer Shandong Yankuang Light Alloy Company, SMS Meer set up one of the world’s
strongest light-alloy presses in its own workshop. This way, the customer could make
sure in advance that the gigantic machine was fully functional. That’s what SMS Meer
calls customer orientation.

HOW TO ACHIEVE 380 KM/H
ON THE TRACKS
Faster, higher, further: Chinese express trains reach a constant speed of 380 km/h, which is much faster than
the competition. Obviously, the wheels have to stand up to enormous strains, so their manufacturers must meet
highest standards.
To make the grade, wheel manufacturers such as MASTEEL wheel company or Taiyuan Heavy Industry rely on
plants from SMS Meer. Just like the producers of the aluminum outer panels: Shandong Nanshan Aluminium
manufactures the aluminum long products on extrusion presses from SMS Meer.
10
11
CLOSED-DIE FORGING
Highest productivity in top form
Weather turbine blades for power stations and aircrafts or connecting rods, knuckles and crank shafts
for the automotive industry and commercial vehicles:
SMS Meer offers every customer in the field of
closed-die forging the right solution. With more than
2,800 machines built it has perhaps the greatest
wealth of experience in this field, too.
RELYING ON TOP PERFORMANCE
Worldwide, the machines with well-known names
such as Schloemann, Eumuco and Hasenclever stand
for top performances. Customers rely on efficient
production processes, excellent product quality and
high availability of the machines. SMS Meer’s portfolio
includes all main presses for closed-die forging with
all upline and downline forming accessories necessary.
With automation and transport equipment or programmable robots SMS Meer succeeds in combining
individual machines to fully automatic productions
lines.
ECCENTRIC PRESSES:
FASTER COMMISSIONING
SMS Meer eccentric presses can be used for virtually
all forging purposes thanks to their automation and
quick tool change systems and simple, manual opera
ting capabilities. The high stroke rate safeguards productivity and the ram quick adjustment system ensures that the forged part thickness can be corrected
without interrupting production. With the EcoPress
series SMS Meer has developed a modular concept
for eccentric presses and accessory equipment. Plant
owners benefit from this through considerably reduced investment costs, shorter delivery times and
faster commissioning.
12
SCREW PRESSES: HIGH FORMING
ENERGY AND PRECISION
The screw presses with electrical direct drive or continuously rotating flywheel are noted for their high
forming energy and high forging precision. Maximum
press forces of up to 355 MN can be achieved with
the flywheel design, in particular. SMS Meer‘s screw
press concept is also characterised by the shortest
pressure dwell times and therefore improved tool service lives.
WEDGE PRESSES: IMPROVED
LOAD CAPABILITY
Wedge presses are designed for longitudinal forged
parts. Thanks to the special wedge drive, the off-
centre load capability in both the forward and backward direction is also improved. SMS Meer presses
can subject several adjacent dies to the full nominal
force.
APPLICATION AREAS
Safety-relevant components for vehicles,
aircrafts and machines e. g. crank shafts,
connection rods, gear wheels, track rod ends,
steering parts, gearing parts, turbine discs
and turbine blades.
ALWAYS ONE STEP AHEAD
The world’s strongest clutch-operated screw press was erected by SMS Meer employees in cooperation
with their Chinese customer Wuxi Turbine Blade (WTB) three month ahead of schedule. The new plant stands
out for its 35,000 t impact force, a screw diameter of 1,320 mm and a weight of 85 t. It requires 87 % less
energy than traditional screw presses. This helps WTB to meet the growing demands of its customers in the
aeronautical and power generation industries. “For us the plant has the advantage of being able to meet the
growing demands of our customers,” says Yan Qi, Managing Director of WTB. “We have been working
together successfully with SMS Meer since 1976.”
13
AUTOMATION FOR
BEST QUALITY
Turbines, aircrafts or machines – all need bearing steel produced with highest precision. Swedish manufacturer Ovako Tube & Ring is one of the leading companies
serving the bearing industry and relying on SMS Meer machines for many years.
Ovako‘s new RiWa 2000/80 is the world’s largest fully automatic ring rolling plant
in which industrial robots transport and position the workpieces. “The largest types
of robots currently available on the market are in use here. We have equipped them
with special gripping tongs for the specific application,” says Robert Düser from
SMS Meer‘s Business Unit Forging Plants.
14
RING AND WHEEL ROLLING
Tailor-made solutions for the ring rolling industry
Rings and wheels large and small – these are the pivot
points of progress. They come in a very wide range of
different profiles and materials. They ensure that every
thing stays in motion, and that pipelines and tanks
can withstand enormously high pressure. SMS Meer
offers tailor-made solutions for exacting fields of applications requiring rings and wheels. The portfolio extends from individual machines such as ring blank
presses, rolling machines and ring expanders to complete plants.
BENEFITTING FROM EXPERIENCE
SMS Meer can draw on more than 150 years of experience in ring and wheel rolling. This goes back to the
Keller & Banning Maschinenfabrik und Eisengießerei
and to the Wagner Maschinenfabrik. Both of these
pioneering firms were founded in the second half of
the nineteenth century and were later acquired by
SMS. Today, SMS Meer’s ring- and wheel rolling activities stand for innovative technology, precision and
top quality. More than 550 completed ring-rolling machines, over 100 complete plants and facilities and
satisfied customers all over the world are solid proof
of the company’s leading position.
AXIAL CLOSED-DIE ROLLING:
REDUCE MATERIAL COSTS
Axial closed-die rolling machines from SMS Meer are
used, for example, for producing axle drive wheels.
Compared to the traditional closed-die forging process on mechanical presses, manufacturers save up
to 30 % on material with the integrated plant solutions.
WHEEL ROLLING:
RUNNING ON HIGH QUALITY
Wheel rolling lines produce full wheels for high-speed
trains, locomotives, railway carriages, trams and underground trains. Thanks to their special design and
SMS Meer‘s globally tested technology, the lines are
especially precise and efficient in operation.
APPLICATION AREAS
„„ Rings from 100 mm to more than
10,000 mm in diameter
„„ Solid wheels and tyres for the railway
industry.
RING ROLLING: FLEXIBLE
PRODUCTION PROCESSES
Wagner Banning ring rolling machines can produce
rings with rectangular cross-sections and numerous
inside and outside profiles. Plastic deformation of the
ring to the precise dimensions takes place in the ring
expander. The control system records the resulting
spring-back automatically and compensates for it
with the expansion stroke.
