November 02, 2014  The Commemoration of  all the Faithful Departed  John 6: 37-40 Gospel:

November 02, 2014 The Commemoration of all the Faithful Departed Gospel: John 6: 37-40 For Faith Sharing Jesus said to the crowds: “Everything that the Father gives me will come to me, and I will not reject anyone
who comes to me, because I came down from heaven not to do my own will but the will of the one who sent
me. And this is the will of the one who sent me, that I should not lose anything of what he gave me, but that I
should raise it on the last day. For this is the will of my Father, that everyone who sees the Son and believes in
him may have eternal life, and I shall raise him on the last day.”
For Faith Sharing: Questions of the Week Question 1 (for children): How do you remember a family member who died? What did they teach you?
Question 2 (for youth): Who are the people in your life who have died? What have you learned from them?
How can you keep their memory alive in your life?
Question 3 (for adults): When you heard the comforting words of the Gospel today, how do they challenge
you to live your life ?

Pastor’s Page REMEMBERING As we approach the Commemoration of All the
Faithful Departed that is celebrated this Sunday, we
hold many people in our hearts. We pause to
remember them, to pray to them, and to thank God
for having made them a part of our lives.
Some of you have already heard the story of the
chalice you see me using at Mass. My father crafted
that chalice for me as an ordination gift back in 1980.
The wood that enshrouds the golden cup is
rosewood that my grandfather bought back from
Honduras in the 1930's when he was working there
for United Fruit Company. Rosewood is a very rare
form of mahogany. Only one in each acre of
mahogany trees is a rosewood tree, sort of an
anomaly of nature--a rare, very hard and dense wood
that is used to make fine pieces of furniture or art. My
dad had always kept some of this precious rosewood
for his special projects, as he was an accomplished
cabinetmaker by hobby.
Dad died in 2001. Several years later, I discovered
something very interesting about the chalice. My
brother told me that dad had rubbed that wood
through his hands for weeks and weeks before he
finally sealed the wood with polyurethane. He told
my brother that rosewood is so precious that no one
ever uses wood stain on it, but that the oil from one's
hands is sufficient to give the wood a rich, dark, deep
color.
You can imagine how much more valuable that
chalice became for me when I learned this, almost 5
years after dad’s death. This means that part of my
father's life is impregnated in the finish of that chalice
which I use every day to hold the precious life-blood
of Christ. I am so moved that Edwin L. Gros, Sr.
brought the wood that Edwin L. Gros, Jr. shaped and
stained for his son the priest, Edwin L Gros, III, S.J. The
whole generational symbol is like a musical chord
that builds from the lowest base notes to the highest
overtones. And the music only has melody because
that chalice is a humble instrument of the
sacramental life of the Church.
The faithful departed are out of sight, but in no way
are they out of mind, and never are they far from our
hearts. The communion of saints connects us all now
and forever. And on this day when we honor the
faithful departed, be sure to thank God for the people
who have given you life and who continue to
intercede for you with God as your personal saints in
heaven.
With love from your pastor,
Fr. Edwin Gros, SJ
A Prayer for the Week God of power and mercy, only with your help can we offer you fitting service and praise. May we live the
faith we profess and trust your promise of eternal life. Grant this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,
who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.
