Stanley G. 4-587 November 9, 2014 To the Parishioners of Sacred Heart Church, Legislative Update: NJ “Aid in Dying for the Terminally III” – Physician –Assisted Suicide The New Jersey legislature is currently considering the so-called “Aid in Dying for the Terminally III” Act, - A2270/ S382 (previously titled “Death with Dignity” Act) which would legalize doctor-prescribed suicide. Doctor-prescribed suicide, sometimes called physician-assisted suicide, is deliberately and intentionally providing an individual with a lethal drug to commit suicide. The bill could be posted for a vote in the full Assembly at any time. Currently, assisting a suicide is a felony in New Jersey. However, A2270/S382 would decriminalize assisting in a suicide for a certain group of people, namely, those facing a terminal diagnosis of 6 months or less. For this group, instead of offering a lifeline of help and support, the law would permit offering a lethal dose of medication. This issue has recently been in the news and polls show that many people support “death with Dignity.” Although the legalization of assisted suicide may appear acceptable when the focus is solely on an individual, it is important to remember legalizing assisted suicide would have repercussions across all society and would put many people at risk of immense harm. After all, not every terminal prognosis is correct, and not everyone has a loving husband, family or support system. The debate on this issue is not new but voters and elected officials grow very wary when they learn the facts. In his encyclical, The Gospel of Life, Blessed John Paul II explains the tragedy of assisted suicide: “Death is considered ‘senseless’ if it suddenly interrupts a life still open to a future of new and interesting experiences. But it becomes a ‘rightful liberation’ once life is held to be no longer meaningful.” He calls the Promotion of assisted suicide “one of the more alarming symptoms of the “culture of death”, which is advancing above all in prosperous societies, marked by an attitude of excessive preoccupation with efficiency and which sees the growing number of elderly and disabled people as intolerable and too burdensome. Education about this issue is key! Please go to http://diometuchen.org/physician-assisted-suicide or www.noassistedsuicidenj.org for more resources. Sincerely, Jennifer A. Ruggiero Jennifer A. Ruggiero Director, Office of Respect for Life Diocese of Metuchen P.O. Chrystus przychodzi do nas, by przez swoje słowo oczyszczać świątynię naszych serc. Słuchajmy słowa, które oczyszcza i uzdrawia Szczęść Wam Boże Ks.
