Each of these committees have submitted to the Foundation its list of objectives for 2015 and the financial needs to help meet those objectives. As we look to the new year we are also beginning to plan for a number of special events, including the March for Meals Bowling Bash at San Juan Lanes and the Wii Bowling Bash. Also this year the Center’s Umbrella Drill Team will once again be strutting its stuff in the Anacortes 4th of July parade. If you call the Center during regularly scheduled hours when the weather is particularly hazardous, and the answering machine picks up, you may assume there has been a change in scheduled hours or emergency closure. Please Stay at Home When Not Well Help us minimize the spread of illness at the Center. If you are suffering from a communicable disease such as a cold or flu, please do not come to the Center. Doing so would put others at risk. We will appreciate you staying at home to take care of yourself while protecting others from the spread of disease. Remember this season that the most effective methods for preventing the spread of communicable disease are frequent hand washing and staying home when you are sick. Page 4 NOVEMBER 2014 Hearing Loops in Anacortes Look for this symbol that indicates that a hearing loop is available. In Anacortes, you will find them at our Center, as well as in the City Council chamber, in the meeting room at the Anacortes Library and at the Anacortes Community Theater. Hearing loop systems take sound straight from the source and deliver it right into the listener’s hearing aid without extraneous noise or blurring. It turns their hearing aids into wireless earphones that broadcast sound customized for their hearing loss. Hearing loops can also be used by people without hearing aids through the use of portable receivers. We have those available at the Center as well. If you have any questions or would like a demonstration of the loop system at the Center, call Sally Hill. Captioned Movies Come to Anacortes Anacortes Cinema is now showing their movies with open captioning on Wednesdays, one time only, so check their website or call to confirm which showing is captioned. The captioning is at the very bottom of the screen, very easy to read and does not interfere with the photography. We hope you will support their effort to make movies more accessible to the hard of hearing. Join the March for Meals Team! The March for Meals Committee has begun meeting and welcomes new members. The committee especially needs volunteers to help recruit teams for the Bowling Bash and to collect prizes. If you are interested in helping in this important effort to support the Meals on Wheels Program, please contact Sally Hill at 293-7473 or stop by and see her in the office. Those invited to offer programs are advised not to see the presentation as an opportunity for sale of a service or product. Page 5 NOVEMBER 2014 Beware of Fake Windows Tech Support Calls History Films There has been a resurgence of fake “tech support” calls. Callers pose as computer support technicians, often from Microsoft itself but also from name-brand computer makers such as Dell or large security companies like Symantec or McAfee. They try to dupe victims into believing that their computer is infected, often by having them look at a Windows log that typically shows scores of harmless or low-level errors. The caller’s phone number on Caller ID can be “spoofed” to look authentic (as, for example, from Microsoft). The caller will try to convince victims to download software or to remotely access the victim’s PC. The con artists charge for their “help” and often get people to pay for worthless software. Frequently the software is not only useless, but also includes malicious Trojan horse malware that steals online account information and passwords. Do not give control of your PC to any fake “tech” caller, and never give out credit card or other personal information. Simply hang up on such calls. This series of historical documentaries by great American filmmakers is shown on the first and fourth Wednesdays at 12:30 p.m. In November, the films will be shown on November 5 and November 26. We will be continuing Ken Burn’s film The Civil War. This Emmy award-winning documentary brings to life America’s most destructive – and defining – conflict. Call Sheri Muntean CPA PhD at 420-5867 for details. TRASH TALK Two Ways to Recycle Plastic Film and Plastic Bags Although the City of Anacortes removed the large “Plastic Bags Only” bin from the Center, recyclers still have options. The second is to deposit collected plastic material in recycle stations at local grocery stores. Many of the best birding hotspots are not known to North Americans and are far from the tourist trail. Through short videos, photos and maps you will glimpse the incredible bird life and the tremendous biodiversity of South America. You will meet scientists and conservationists working to protect places where nature flourishes like nowhere else on earth. They will also share some of the latest research on the flamingos of the high Andes and efforts to protect them and their habitat. Volunteers are invited to stop by any day of the week to say hello to the residents of Denali and Mt. Erie, located at 1105 27th Street. Many of the residents in these two buildings rarely get visitors and feel lonely. Each resident will have a list of three topics of interest to them posted on the doors of their rooms, so that you can easily establish comfortable communication. Volunteers are also welcome to get involved with activities, music, share photos or enjoy a free lunch with the residents. You can also just stop by for five minutes to smile and say hello. Advocates Make a Difference Free Medical Eye Exams Volunteer advocates bridge the gap between our community and the residents of long-term care facilities like nursing homes, who may be isolated from the mainstream of society. Long-Term Care Ombuds serve as advocates, observers, educators, planners, mediators, listeners, troubleshooters, facilitators and peacemakers. Get the satisfaction of helping to assure the best quality of life for the elderly. For training and information call Sandi Everest, Northwest Regional Long-Term Care Ombudsman, at (360) 421-1080. Many elderly individuals in our home of Anacortes need someone to listen when they speak, and speak for them when they can't. EyeCare America, a public service program of the Foundation of the American Academy of Ophthalmology matches seniors in need with volunteer ophthalmologists who provide a medical eye exam and up to one year of care at no outof-pocket cost to the patient. To find out if you or your loved ones qualify for this program, visit eyecareamerica.org. (The online application does not request financial information.) Anacortes Senior Activity Center Page 14 NOVEMBER 2014 All in the Same Boat: Anacortes in the Great Depression Too grim for an exhibit, you say? Actually, the topic of the newest Anacortes Museum exhibit is surprisingly uplifting. In Anacortes, no one had any money, but everyone was in the same boat, so people looked out for each other. They bartered and traded, gave what they could, organized fundraisers, and founded workers’ co-ops. New Deal programs put men to work building streets and parks — such as Deception Pass State Park — and creating works of art that we still enjoy today. There were festivals and parades, dances and football games, movies — with sound! — clubs and gatherings. The exhibit can be seen Tuesday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sunday 1 to 4 p.m. at the Anacortes Museum, located at 1305 8th Street. Caring Conversations: Talking About End of Life Wishes You are invited to join Hospice of the Northwest staff for an intimate dinner and conversation about end of life planning on Wednesday November 12 at 5:30 p.m. at Seafarer’s Memorial Park Building. The presentation will also be given on Thursday November 13, at 5:30 p.m. at Max Dale’s restaurant in Mount Vernon. Hospice staff recognizes that these decisions and conversations can be hard to address, and their hope is to help you and your loved ones through the process. There is no charge to attend. Space is limited and reservations are required. Call (360) 814-5702 to reserve your seat. Coffee with Laurie Mayor Laurie Gere is scheduled to be at the Center on the last Wednesday of each month from 1:30 to 3 p.m. for an informal coffee hour with citizens.
