THE GIVING TREE: - is

and children of the Lurana Shelter, a refuge for those fleeing family violence. We will be in the front gathering place of the
Church the first weekend of Advent, Nov. 29th /30th. The angels and stars hanging on the Giving Tree suggest items that are
needed for the Lurana Shelter. Each parish family is encouraged to pick an angel or star and return a new item during the
following three weekends of Advent. In 2013 our parish donated approximately 7,400 new items of clothing, toiletries, books,
toys, games and creative activities. A special request to fund baby cribs for the Shelter was a remarkable success and eight
hospital quality baby cribs were purchased. Families are encouraged to keep the angel or star to hang on their own Christmas
tree as a reminder of a special Advent gift. Once again the Catholic Girls’ League will be decorating the angels and stars.
PLEASE ENSURE ALL TOYS ARE OF A NON-VIOLENT NATURE AND PLEASE DO NOT WRAP THE GIFTS.

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ Jesus,
Today we commemorate the dedication of the Lateran Basilica.
The first basilica of Rome, a renovated palace of the Lateran
family, was consecrated on this date in 324 as the Church of
the Most Holy Savior. Nearby communities of monks lent it the
name of Saint John. Saint Lateran is the Pope’s Cathedral.
This church is called “the mother of all churches”. St. John Paul
II said: “The beauty and the harmony of churches, destined to
render praise to God, invite us human beings too, though
limited and sinful, to convert ourselves to form a ‘cosmos’, a
well-ordered construction, in close communion with Jesus, who
is the true Holy of Holy’s”.
Jesus in today’s Gospel speaks about the temple of his Body.
We are his Body. We are the temple of God. Nowadays, our
awareness of belonging to Christ-the Head of the Church and
the sense of the ecclesiastical community seem to be
decreasing. The light of faith slowly fades in the minds of young
people and is not attractive any more. Secularism and
temporality have great influence on us all. Are the words of
Saint John Paul II, quoted above, outdated? Not at all. His
words should impel us to constant (renewal of our hearts and
minds) conversion through prayer and deeds of love. We are
called to “throw the seeds of faith” unto the soil of the hearts
and minds of young people, no matter how difficult it is.
On the Catholic Education Sunday, which is today, we should
realize that each has the responsibility to build up the Church.
God has not withdrawn his call to this mission because of our
personal sins or negligence committed in the past. On the
contrary, His call is demanding from us, more prayer and
solidarity among us. Since faith-based education is rooted in
the communion of school, home and parish, we should join
efforts to form and guide our children to become life-long
disciples of Jesus Christ and help them become proud of being
faithful members (sons and daughters) of the Church.
2015: -Missals are for sale in the
parish office. You may obtain them from the parish
office for $5 each for the adult Missal’s and $10
each for the children’s missals.
