A STEWARDSHIP MOMENT
In today’s Gospel we envision a crowd following Jesus,
seeking him. He invites them to embrace faith in himself and
his Father in heaven and share in their eternal life. He comes
right out and says that no one who comes will be rejected,
reminding us that even those who feel estranged from God or
the church are welcomed. Good stewards know that everyone
can be raised up if they accept the Father’s will, and in turn,
use the gifts God has given them to further Christ’s work. This
promise gives us hope. The stewardship question is: are we
true seekers of the Lord? Do we genuinely desire a
relationship with Christ? Are we willing to follow him?

ͷ΃΀;͑΅͹Ͷ͑΁Ͳ΄΅΀΃
͑
Greeting you with love and blessings from God. How was your week? Hopefully with this beautiful weather and the Saints
big win last Sunday, it is making you happy and cheerful. (This bulletin is being published ‘before” last Thursday’s game to
the Carolina Panthers, so hopefully we came out winners again). Yes Lord, we need you to perform a miracle for our Saints.
Knock on wood, so far, so good!
As you may have heard, on Wednesday, October 22, 2014, we had the very difficult task of letting our school staff, and
parents as well as you, our parishioners know that our school is going to close next year. Let me confirm that “yes,” St.
Agnes SCHOOL is going to close beginning with the next school year. After many days of praying, studying, and working
closely with the Archdiocese Office of Catholic Schools, we are heartbroken and disappointed that it had to come to this
conclusion. There are two practical reasons for this decision:
1) The enrollment of the students at St. Agnes School has decreased in the last few years. As you may know, this
year we have only 154 students enrolled, and only a few students are actually members of St. Agnes Parish. Almost 80% of
the students are on scholarship. The parish has been struggling to meet the budget in the past few years with the hope that
the enrollment would increase, but unfortunately with all the new Charter Schools and International Schools opening
everywhere, our enrollment kept decreasing. No school can meet a budget with under 200 students. All of you have made
many sacrifices to support our school in every way you could in the last few years, and we really appreciate it.
2) The condition of our school plant, after 73 years is deteriorating, and it is very expensive to repair and update. It
will cost a lot of money for the many repairs that need to be done and to bring the school up to standards, and financially our
parish cannot afford it.
I have been at St. Agnes for 7 1/2 years, and God knows, and you know that I have tried the best I could to help keep St.
Agnes School open because I strongly believe in Catholic education for every child, and also having a school made our parish
come alive with the young children. But, unfortunately, society has changed and things have changed, and we were faced
with no other choice but to close.
This decision is very painful for me and for many of you to see our school closing. In the past 73 years St. Agnes had an
excellent reputation, not only in academics and discipline, but also in family tradition and history. Many families of St. Agnes
have received an education from St. Agnes, from many generations, grandparents, parents, children, grandchildren, and even
some great-grandchildren. Many of you still remember and attended St. Agnes School when it was held in a gambling hall.
Talk about history! Yes, St. Agnes School had a lot of history in Old Jefferson parish. I am sure many of you feel
disappointed and hurt by this news, especially some of our faculty and staff that have been with us for over 30 years, but for
the sake of our children’s future, we have to trust in God’s way. I do believe that God allows everything to happen for a
reason. When you close one door, he will let another door open. So trust in God and let him lead us to where we need to go.
I also want to take this opportunity to clear all of the rumors and gossip that you may have heard regarding this topic, i.e., the
church is closing, the Marquette Activity Center is closing. Please know that the Church and all other ministries are still
functioning. Nothing had changed, only the SCHOOL IS CLOSING. So ignore all of the rumors or gossip, and maybe
correct them if you can.
Another bit of sad news we heard last weekend was that Fr. Vinh’s mother passed away on Friday, October 24th. Please pray
for Fr. Vinh and his family in this time of mourning. May she rest in peace with God.
Now for some good news, after a few months of fixing and repainting, finally, the apartment on Shrewsbury Court has been
rented beginning November 1st. Thank God we will have a little more income for the parish. Also, the Craft Fair that was held
on Saturday had more than 30 vendors, congratulations to Marilyn and a successful craft fair. One more thing, thanks to the
Ducote brothers for repairing the main church door that was stuck on Sunday. They were able to repair it after about three
hours or working on it. Your expertise is very much appreciated, especially on Sunday.
Last, but not least, if you are reading this bulletin this Saturday evening, please remind your family to change their clocks
BACK one hour so that they will make it to Mass on Sunday on time and not an hour earlier. For those who love to sleep, like
me, thank God we will gain an extra hour of sleep. Have a great week! May God keep you healthy, happy, peaceful with
yourself and one another, and be kind to one another. Don’t forget to keep smiling. You always feel better with a smile,
especially with the nice weather we are having now. God Bless.
