“We contacted Jackie because our Yorkshire Terrier Milli was very hyperactive and sometimes showed signs of stress. After only three sessions she
has calmed down considerably and seems much happier – although she is still
a little excitable at times. This obviously makes us happier and more at ease.
Milli seems to really enjoy the treatment she receives and it is lovely to see her
more relaxed. Jackie has a real empathy with Milli, you only have to see her
working with Milli to realise this. We have already recommended Jackie to one
of our friends as we are so very pleased with the progress she has made with
Milli. Contacting Jackie was the best thing we could have done for all of us.”

Focus on... Health
Dementia
Around 800,000 people in the
UK have dementia.
The word dementia describes
a set of symptoms which
include memory loss, and
difficulty with thinking, problem
solving and language. These
symptoms can sometimes
be caused by other things
however, so it’s important to
get a diagnosis as soon as
possible. Your GP may refer
you to a specialist consultant. Assessments are likely to
include conversations with you
and your loved ones, a physical examination, memory tests
and/or a brain scan.
Dementia is caused when the
brain is damaged by diseases,
such as Alzheimer’s disease
or a series of strokes.
Alzheimer’s disease is the
most common type of
dementia, affecting 62 per
cent of those diagnosed.
Other types include vascular
dementia affecting 17 per
cent, and mixed dementia
which affects 10 per cent of
those diagnosed.
Dementia UK is a charity. In
addition to Admiral Nurses it
also provides a national
helpline and email service.
One of the other major
organisations in this field is
the Alzheimer’s Society. This
is a membership organisation
which provides local support
services, including day care
and home care and befriending and support for families
and partners of those with
dementia. They also provide
fact sheets and publications
and have a helpline and an
online forum called talking
point. In addition, the Alzheimer’s Society fund research,
provide training and development and campaign to raise
awareness.
One of their recent initiatives
is Dementia Friends. You
may have seen the television
adverts for this which included
lots of celebrity support. Anyone can become a Dementia
Friend. I did in just over 10
minutes!
This campaign is all about
increasing understanding
about dementia, and
educating people so that
they can help those with the
condition. Dementia Friends
learn a little bit about what
it’s like to have dementia and
then turn this understanding
into action. This could include
helping someone get on the
correct bus, or being patient if
someone with dementia is
taking a long time to find the
right change when paying
for their goods at a till. To
become a friend you watch
a short video on the website
then register or attend a local
information session.

Those with dementia may be
given medicines to help with
symptoms and slow down
progression, but as yet there
is no cure. Some sufferers
also attend day centres and
support groups. Carers can
get help from local Carers
Groups, Social Services and
Dementia UK’s Admiral
Nurses. These nurses specialise in dementia and provide
practical and emotional
support as well as information
to families, friends and professionals.

All veterinary surgeons undergo a broad based training in veterinary medicine and surgery for a
minimum of 5 years before qualifying. Recognised specialist veterinary surgeons must undergo
extensive addi•onal training for a minimum of 4 years and pass rigorous Diploma examina•ons
before they can become specialists. Veterinary specialists work in much the same way
as specialists or consultants in human medicine and only accept cases that are referred
to them by general prac••oners. Unfortunately in the UK the •tle of specialist is not
protected and any veterinary surgeon can claim exper•se in a par•cular field, adver•se that
they accept referrals and even call themselves a specialist.
In the UK the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS) which is the governing
body for the veterinary profession has laid down strict criteria concerning training and
experience required to gain "recognised" specialist status. Recognised specialists must
have appropriate postgraduate qualifica•ons and demonstrate that they are ac•vely
involved with their discipline and up to date with recent advances. RCVS specialist status
must be re-accredited every 5 years and is not easily achieved. To view the veterinary
qualifica•ons needed to be included on the list of recognised specialists visit the Royal
College of Veterinary Surgeons website: www.rcvs.org.uk
At SCVS all our clinicians have undergone extensive postgraduate training and are
either recognised RCVS or European specialists or are in the process of obtaining
advanced qualifica•ons that will lead to specialist status in the future.
Recognised specialists have much greater knowledge, experience and exper•se in their
discipline than general prac••oners or Cer•ficate holders. In addi•on clinicians working in referral centres have access to specialised diagnos•c and therapeu•c equipment and
facili•es that are not available in general prac•ce. As one of the few truly mul•disciplinary referral centres in the UK our pa•ents benefit from the wide spectrum of
exper•se offered by our team of specialists in different disciplines all under one roof.

Focus on... Astronomy
I Give you the Moon !
It’s inspired songs, controls
our tides and is Earth’s nearest neighbour, but how often
do you actually look up at
moon? Dark, clear, frosty winter nights might be the perfect
time to start.
Binoculars are a better place
to start than telescopes because they are easier to handle for beginners. An ordinary
pair of binoculars – available
very cheaply – will do just
fine initially. Astronomy at its
most basic is about magnification and light-gathering
power. Even a moderate form
of power, like those provided
by a pair of 7×50 binoculars,
reveals 7 times as much information as the unaided eye
can see.
The moon is a great place to
start for budding astronomers.
If ultimately you want to see
deep-sky objects inside our
own Milky Way galaxy – or
even outside the galaxy –
you’ll want to avoid the full
moon because its brightness
interferes with our view of
fainter objects. So you’ll need
to watch the phases of the
moon carefully. But the moon
itself is a terrifically interesting
18 18The Ringwood Focus
target in its own right, and well
worth studying properly before
moving on.
The best time to observe
the moon is in twilight, when
the glare of the moon is not
so great and more detail is
visible.
It’s best to start moon-gazing
when the moon is just past
new (waxing), and visible as a
slender crescent in the western sky after sunset. At such
times you’ll have a beautiful
view of earthshine on the
moon. This eerie glow on the
moon’s darkened portion is really light reflected from Earth
on to the moon’s surface.
Each month, as the moon
goes through its regular
phases, you can see the line
of sunrise and sunset on the
moon as it progresses across
the moon’s face. This is the
line between the day and
night sides of the moon and
is called the terminator line.
The best place to study the
moon from Earth is along this
terminator line. The sun angle
is very low in this twilight zone
and this means the lunar
features cast long shadows in
sharp relief.
You will also see grey areas
on the moon. These are called
maria, so named because
early astronomers thought
they were seas. In fact they
are now thought to have
formed 3.5 billion years ago
when asteroid-sized rocks hit
the moon so hard that lava
percolated up through cracks
in the lunar crust and flooded
the impact basins. These lava
plains cooled and eventually
formed the grey areas we see
today.
The white highlands, nestled
between the maria, are older
and they are pockmarked by
thousands of craters that have
formed over millions of years.
Some of the larger craters are
visible through binoculars.
One of them, Tycho, at the six
o’clock position on the moon,
emanates long swatches of
white rays for hundreds of
miles over the adjacent highlands. This is material kicked
out during the Tycho impact
2.5 million years ago.
So this winter, why not wrap
up warm, get out and gaze up
at the moon. It’s well worth the
effort.

ENERGY THERAPY REIKI
Instead of telling you about how Reiki works, I
thought it best to let my clients tell you about their
experiences and how it has helped them...
Jackie Howchin
I was referred to Jackie by a relative who had also been suffering from anxiety and stress. I had already
seen the amazing effect that Jackie had on her, and I decided to try Reiki for myself. After just one
session I felt so much more positive and confident. Jackie has a wonderful ability to make you feel like
she has all the time in the world for you, and puts you at ease instantly. I’m so privileged to have met
her and would highly recommend Reiki with her to anyone.
Laurie – Bournemouth
I came to see Jackie a year on from a gruelling divorce and exhausted from the rigours of single
parenting two daughters. I had survived, but I was incredibly weary and still very angry. As someone
who is a ‘coper’ and who usually gets through life with grim determination and a breezy ‘i’m fine’, I recognised that I hadn’t processed many of my feelings and the tools I was used to using i.e. my head, just
weren’t working for me any more. Therefore I turned to Reiki as a means of bypassing my head and
working with myself at an energetic level. I was sceptical that it would make any kind of difference and
half expected it to be a nice relaxation but nothing more. After the first session however, I experienced
a profound shift in my feelings. I felt, lighter, freer, more full of love and gratitude for my life and my
daughters, less stressed and considerably more open. Thank you Jackie for the very intuitive, loving
gift that you have. I will also be bringing my daughters to you soon.
Anna - Alderholt
My husband died of cancer and I was a lost soul with no direction. I saw Jackie's advert and thought
why not. With the correct presence of mind we are capable of doing anything and Jackie restored my
confidence and want to join the world again. From the first session I was relaxed and Jackie has the
capability to make you feel like your the only person who is important. She listens and cares for her
clients with a true passion. The power of positive thought is a wonderful state of mind and with Jackie's
help I have achieved not only direction but also a desire for life. I will never stop missing my husband
but with Reiki and Jackie I can now face the world with my head held high. The deep relaxation is an all
consuming therapy and very enjoyable. We should all have a Jackie in our lives.
Judith - Ringwood
I was lucky enough to discover Reiki during my exams at College. I hadn’t realized how stressed I
was getting with all my revision and studying. Reiki helped to calm my nerves and give me a renewed
energy – this helped me to cope with my exams and I’m pleased to say I did really well. I now have Reiki
regularly to keep my energy balanced and boosted… it’s fantastic.
Elliott – Dorchester
Jackie is incredibly warm and genuine and made me feel comfortable and relaxed straight away (which
isn’t easy for me!). She is insightful and understanding and has really helped me make such quick progress in a really short time. Her passion for Reiki is infectious. I’m so pleased I’ve met her and benefited
from her positive influence!
Lauren - New Forest
“Thank you is not enough … but it’s the only words I have. Thank you for making me feel unbroken and
unblocked. Thank you for your fantastic words of encouragement. Thank you! You are a beautiful
soul, inside and out. I hope you see what I can see – and that you realise just how much you are worth.
I am so blessed to know you. THANK YOU!”
Fiona – Yeovil
Dearest Jackie, You haven’t just changed my life – because of you my fabulous life has just started.
A million thank you’s and life-long gratitude. You’re a special, special lady.
Ann – Wimborne

FALLS PREVENTION WORKSHOPS
Steady and stronger for longer
Steady and Strong exercise classes are taught by qualified postural stability instructors, who have
been specifically trained to help reduce falls in older people. The classes are suitable for any older
person in Hampshire who has had or who is worried about having a fall, has decreased mobility or
has trouble with their balance. The aim of the classes is to keep people on their feet to help them
stay independent. The classes also link in with the NHS led fall prevention classes and provide a
follow on for people completing their rehabilitation. The classes last for an hour and are run in a
friendly atmosphere and usually close with the opportunity for a chat over a cup of tea. The prices
vary from £3 - £3.50 per session.
Classes in Ringwood are led by experienced Postural Stability Instructor Gilly Ostler and are at
Quaker Court on Thursday at 10.100am and 11.00am.
For more information or to book on a class for the first time contact Gilly Ostler on: 07817 233 707

High-Tech Warmth !
Stay warm this winter with
heated clothing! From gloves
to gilets, socks to sweaters and
hats to jackets, there is a whole
range of garments out there to
keep you sizzling hot!
Chemical packages which react
when exposed to air or when
twisted, or packets of gel which
store heat after being heated
in the microwave, can keep
you warm for several hours
when placed in a pouch inside
clothing, depending on the
size of the packet, thickness
of insulation, and the outdoor
temperature.
batteries can stay warm for up
to five hours - and some have
variable heat settings as well as
an on/off switch.
If on a motorbike, some clothing
can be wired into the cigarette
lighter or straight into the bike’s
battery, and other items can
even be plugged directly into
the mains – for example gloves
that connect to a computer’s
USB port!
An alternative way to keep
warm is thermal clothing, which
does not produce heat itself, but
prevents body heat from
escaping by warming the layer
of air between the skin and the
clothing. New synthetic
materials such as polypropylene
provide excellent insulation,
reduce moisture and are so
lightweight that they can be
worn discreetly as underwear
under normal clothing.
The most effective method of
heating is electrical. Clothing

and powered by rechargeable

About PC David Rathband’s Blue Lamp Foundation
PC David Rathband was the Police Officer who was shot on 4th July 2010 in a particularly
vicious gun crime that occurred in Newcastle upon Tyne. Events around that time united
the country in fear, upset and anger as well as highlighting the danger our emergency
services personnel put themselves in, as part of their role, each and every day. Whilst lying
in his hospital bed, recovering from his horrific injuries, David had the idea of starting the
‘Blue Lamp Foundation’. David then set about starting his charity which would provide
financial aid to cover the unexpected costs that the injured individuals may now face due to
that particular incident, such as their hospital car parking charges, emergency child care
costs, taxi fares, prescriptions, mobility aids, help in the home, physiotherapy, rehabilitation
treatment – to name just a few. Sadly David is no longer with us, but his legacy will
continue to live on in the valuable work that PC David Rathband’s Blue Lamp Foundation
does to support our Emergency Services personnel.
PC David Rathband’s Blue Lamp Foundation was officially launched in October 2010 to
provide grants to support the UK’s emergency services personnel injured in the line of their
duty (and the families and dependants of such personnel). Since then the Foundation has
provided significant grants including support to a Paramedic who’s legs were crushed in an
road traffic accident; Police Officers who were injured in knife attacks; a Police Community
Support Officer who was injured whilst making an arrest; a motorcycle Police Officer who
was paralysed in a road traffic incident and a Fire Fighter who had his leg broken during a
call out. The Foundation has also given £60k to the Police Treatment Centres to refurbish
specialist rehabilitation bedrooms and £60k to the Fire Fighters’ Charity to develop a really
valuable national health and wellbeing programme for all Fire Fighters.
PC David Rathband’s Blue Lamp Foundation is strictly non-political and does not have an
affiliation with any political party and does not endorse the use of it’s name for the
promotion of any political viewpoint. Our emergency services workers are there to help us
!
when we need them; this is an opportunity for us to help them.
For further details, or to fundraise, please see our website www.bluelamp-foundation-org or
contact us at the address or telephone number above.!
