November 10, 2014 The East Side Insider East Side Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), Tulsa, OK Volume 43, Issue 36 Paying Blessings Forward Photos by David Gurule Thanksgiving Outreach Info from Evan Remember when this group was smaller? Look at all the great voices ensembling now! We are blessed indeed! When you have time, take a blessing inventory of your family, your church, your workplace….and pay a blessing or two forward. You will be richer for it. Save the Date, Sunday, Nov. 23, for the All Church Thanksgiving dinner aer worship. Aer lunch there will be an opportunity to help with the Christmas decora#ng! Last Thanksgiving, my family decided to do something a little different. We were tired of the same old family get together, the excess of food, the cleaning up, the stress of pulling it all together… we tried to volunteer at local places to serve, but they said they had plenty of people helping. You may have heard me talk about a funky Lutheran pastor in Denver named Nadia-Bolz Webber. Her church started a campaign a few years back and called it “It Sucks to Work on Thanksgiving” and a handful of members packed turkey sandwiches and took them to all the businesses that had workers working. Their first year they did about 50, now the operation has changed its name and its size and provides turkey sandwiches to over 1000 people in the Denver Area! What a great idea! My family and I pulled together a small band of fellow turkey misfits and delivered almost 100 “Thanksgiving in a cup” to area business that were open. We all piled in the church bus and delivered the meals from Braum’s to QT and everyone in between. We are doing it again. If you want to come help, let me know! We will meet here in the church kitchen to prepare the meals at 10 am on Thanksgiving morning. We should be wrapped up and done by 2pm. Ask around, it really is a lot of fun! ~ On another holiday note, our “Adopt-a-case-worker” at WRHS has requested some help for some families in need at the school. Here are her requests: 20 Turkeys 10 - $10 gi( cards to various business like movie theaters or Target. If you can help with any of that, or want to make a monetary dona,on, let me know! Note “Caseworker” on checks Thank you East Side for all you do in our amazing community, you all are truly a blessing to Tulsa. Evan We’ve been invited…. ...to join First Christian Church Tulsa for a couple of upcoming events in December. See the poster to the right for the December 4, Jazz to the World evening of music and fellowship. Later in December, on Sunday evening, Dec. 21, we are invited to join FCC for Christmas Carols and Wassail. We will have more information for you on that event in the weeks ahead. What a great way to share the holidays with our church friends in the area. Invite your friends to join you and help spread the Joy of Christmas! Thank you! Will Rogers High School Football dinner Team: Thank you for all your hard work and for your contribution of time for this outreach!! Courtyard Seasonal Decorations If your usual route in the church does NOT take you down the hall between the office and the sanctuary, try a different route. The lovely seasonal decorations in the courtyard are worth the few extra steps. We have Diane Skelley to thank for the festive fun! Thank you Diane for brightening our view from the office. Can’t wait to see what you have planned for Christmas! Page 2 The East Side Insider Prayers and Praises for... From the Inside Out We celebrate with Jason and Heather (Mayfield) Farris as they begin their new life together! They were married on Saturday. Thank you God for the men and women who have served and are serving our country. Please watch over them in all they do. Please include these folks in your prayers: Floyd Sellers, Anna Hubbard, Goldie Brocato, Vida Marie Smith, Terry Lundgren, Jo Booth, Sheila Hood, Randy Thomas, Jean Norbin, Andrew Haverstick, those on your own personal list, their families and caregivers. The years’ end is fast approaching and there is still much to accomplish in 2014. Please keep East Side in your prayers as we open our doors each day and reach out to our community. Additions? Please call the office or send an email to office@escc.org This Tuesday is Veteran’s Day. It is called Remembrance Day in England. My cousin and family recently sent pictures of the Tower of London surrounded by thousands of ceramic red poppies, placed there over the last year to commemorate all England’s fallen. The scenes are breathtakingly beautiful and moving: click here: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/in-pictures-29935592 Please find a way to say “thank you” to a veteran this week – many are homeless, too many. Many agencies support causes particularly meaningful to them. Send $$$, or take one to lunch, or stop to give one a hug. Due largely to our veterans and active duty personnel, we really have very little reason to be fearful; we enjoy considerable freedom – maybe too much, if the acrimony and division that pervades our social dialogue is any indication. Congratula, ons to Jason and Heather! I can’t help but think of Sunday’s sermon on the “talents”…which really is about the kingdom of God. I called it “From Fear to Freedom” because the picture of the kingdom as Jesus’ portrayed it is easily missed by those who still read scripture as moralistic law. Jesus’ view of the kingdom is about radical love, extravagant, wastefully abundant, prodigal grace! It frees us of the fear of being good enough 24/7, freeing us to be human, while trying our best to follow Jesus. It allows us to eat and mingle with “sinners.” If the church is to rise from the ashes of legalistic moralism it will have to find the way of Jesus. We had a plan for doing that, approved about 5 ½ years back. We referred to it as a recipe for growth, but it was more about mission than evangelism. To summarize: everything we do should be outwardly focused ; all our practices and traditions have to be reinterpreted for a new generation, if we are to be relevant; we have unique blessings by which we are to be a blessing to our community/others. Meet people where they are. Show them by our love – actions – that the good news sets them free to be the people God created them to be. Blessings, Fred Food pantry needs… Married Saturday, November 8, 2014 Best wishes from your church family!
