Surfers Paradise Catholic Parish ONE PARISH three churches 33rd SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME—YEAR A 15TH / 16TH NOVEMBER 2014 Sacred Heart 50 Fairway Drive, Clear Island Waters St Vincent’s Dear Parishioners and Visitors LOOKING BACK WITH THANKS, LOOKING FORWARD WITH HOPE Stella Maris As the Season of Advent draws nigh, it is timely to briefly reflect on the year past, and on what the Parish Leadership and Parish Mission Council addressed at a recent meeting. PASTORAL The journey really began in 2011, when, in consultation with you, we formulated the Surfers Paradise Catholic Parish Pastoral Plan 2011 which was to be reviewed in 2014-2015. The Plan built on the Archdiocesan Synod Strategy—Jesus, Communion and Mission. 40 Hamilton Avenue, Surfers Paradise 268 Hedges Avenue, Very Reverend Fr Tim Harris Parish Priest & Dean of South Coast Deanery Fr Christopher Obi Associate Pastor Fr Nicholas Okafor Associate Pastor Sue Thomas Pastoral Associate Sr Mary Hansen PBVM Pastoral Assistant You identified that the key areas for our Parish to work on were Liturgy, Daily Christian Life, Welcoming Communities, Social Justice and Welfare and Young People. The Plan aligned each to a Synod priority and added a parish Goal, Time Frame and Objective. From there the Plan outlined a series of ‘how do we do this’ steps. At last week’s meeting, the Mission Council discussed each section of the Plan, considered results achieved, and assessed overall performance as “a job well done”. Much has been achieved in the past three years—meaningful and encouraging liturgies, a Stewardship booklet and increased participation in Lay Ministries, improved Welcoming and Hospitality effort, a broad spread of community activities in Social Justice and Welfare, and a strong Youth Ministry activity. PARISH STAFF I have shared with you from time to time the very favourable comments our Parish receives from visitors who attend our local Masses and feel compelled to tell us how much they enjoyed their worship experience. Sonya Slater Parish Manager So please find your copy of the 2011 Plan, have a browse through it, and if you would care to comment it would be most welcome. Marylou Ayres Parish Secretary And now to 2014. It began with a wonderful offering from Pope Francis entitled ‘Evangelii Gaudium’ - The Joy of the Gospel. It is a straight talking, clear thinking contribution on how the church needed to change and the areas that needed to be addressed. Angela Williams Atrium Coordinator Shannon Morrison Baptism Coordinator Rita Foxlee State School R.E. SCHOOLS St Vincent’s School Clear Island Waters Phone: 5572 1746 P. Kerry Rowlands St Kevin’s School Benowa Phone: 5539 4522 P. Sue Curtis St Michael’s College Merrimac Phone: 5530 2722 P. Michael Laidler The majority of your Parish Mission Council attended the Proclaim Conference in Sydney, that was a examination of Evangelii Gaudium and what it meant in practical terms. Nationally, consensus was that the Church needed to concentrate on simple issues such as Music, Message (from the pulpit) and Ministers (it’s our Church so let’s all roll up our sleeves and get to it and spread the good news of the Gospels.) So these will be the matters we will be addressing when revising our Pastoral Plan for 20152018 and I will communicate further on this in the New Year. In addition, our achievement in building a new Stella Maris Church is highly significant. Due to be dedicated in early February 2015, the Church is emerging thanks to your financial support. You have ‘bank-rolled’ the project and enabled the Parish to remain active and visible at Broadbeach for many years to come. As Archbishop Mark Coleridge commented “unbelievable and an absolute credit to all concerned.” Thank you all for what you have contributed to the wonderful community that is the Surfers Paradise Catholic Parish over the past four and a half years in particular. Please continue your involvement and support as we now move forward to encounter new challenges and opportunities in the period ahead. God’s abundant blessings, Fr Tim. Church Door Café AT SACRED HEART CHURCH Come and try our Breakfast and Lunch Menu’s! Open Monday to Friday 7.30am to 3.30pm “Where parishioners, schools, parents and locals can come together united in the love of Christ.” This week we met to discuss the sound and data that will be used in the church. We have a consultant who is working to obtain the best sound and data requirements at the best price. A challenge. Many of the finishes for the church are being finalised in readiness for its opening in February. Sandra and Lee Dunne have a keen eye for beautiful finishes. Below is an 3D image of the entrance of the church. This image shows the way natural light is captured through the glass window of Mother and Child. The pews are a very light beech timber. There are only 14 pews available to sponsor. If you would like to sponsor one in the name of your family or loved one please call me at the Parish on 5572 5433. A week ago, Arron Lucas a parishioner who has donated the lighting for the church met with the architects to finalise the lighting requirements. They met at night and ran a series of tests from various heights. High priority has been given to the maintenance and every effort has been made to keep the lights to a level easily maintainable. The Parish sincerely thanks Arron and Sharon Lucas for their incredible generosity and time given to the project. Remember the project in your prayers.
